Apologies if this has been posted somewhere else before.

I have a HTC Desire HD and the battery was draining away like water without me doing anything. I searched through the internet for advice and tips and most of it was stuff I had already done.

Upon looking through the phone myself I found the culprit setting for draining my battery so quickly:

Menu > Settings > Applicatons > Fast Boot

Uncheck this and suddenly the battery starts working like it should

All fast boot seems to do, is make a restart really quick... the price you pay for this is major battery drain. Seems a bit daft for this to be checked by default.

Must be specific to the Desire HD, my plain old Desire doesn't have the Fast Boot option.

Ok, this is a general Android feature but I still feel it warrants sharing:
If you're having problems setting up email accounts, try going to GMail and setting that up to fetch your email. Do this by going to Gmail.com on a PC, signing in, selecting 'Settings' (top right of the screen), 'Accounts and Import' and 'Check mail using POP3'. Then you can add the account in the normal way.

By doing this, you're setting Google's servers to check your other email accounts, which saves you data usage and battery life. I did this a while ago for my uni email address, and set up a filter and label so that all emails from that account are labelled as "Cardiff".

Obviously this means you don't have separate inboxes for each account, but it is fairly trivial to set up shortcuts to GMail labels on your phone, and it is a nice workaround to uncooperative routers/networks.

Whilst this would be great...my gmail account won't let me do it!! I type in all the information required but get a temporary error message (500) numeric code 103 which tells me my gmail account is currently unavailable...this isn't true as I can shut the window and continue using my account for everything else! It's very frustrating as I still have to check my ymail.com inbox through the internet explorer!  Waiting for a response from gmail help team!

I generally find the desire battery only lasts a day. I have however found a few bits to help maintain.

Firstly the obvious, Lowering the display brightness, keeping rintone volume lower than full, turning wifi/bluetooth off.

Then running battery down to completely empty and doing a full charge for say 3-4 hours with the phone off.

Also switching the phone off and on can declog the cache memory which when clogged up can cause the CPU to run at a high speed thus lowering battery effectiveness.

If all else fails i always have a car charger in the car for any journeys etc.

One thing I do with regards to battery life is keep 'Mobile Network' turned off. 

if you add the widget (long press on home screen > widget > settings > mobile network) it give you a nifty little button that you can just toggle off and on. This has made my phone last from about a day and has pushed it up to the two day mark if I'm sensible. Obviously this means widgets don't update all the time and things but I just put it on for 5 minutes every so often to keep things up to date. (You also dont get as many ads when playing angry birds either )

here's a tip to help with the poor internal memory on the htc desire

uninstall all updates on the preintalled apps like facebook,maps etc and adobe flash and go back to the original versions then update all again except maybe flash and do this everytime there is a new update it seems the phone stores every version of the app  ie my facebook used to take up nearly 30 mb now only takes up 7 mb 

i've now got many more apps and around 30mb of free space instead of around 4mb

my headphones have stopped letting me play etc when i press it, i actually have to use the phone manually is there anything i can do? i have two sets of headphones and neither work

Thanks for sharing. Are these the headphones that came with the handset or some that you've purchased separately? Have they stopped working since a recent software update on the HTC Desire or does it seem both pairs have just suffered wear and tear? Finally is it the play/volume functions that don't work or the call answer/end feature?

Once I have more details to work with we can troubleshoot this with you.
