HTC Desire - My feedback after a few weeks use

Hi everybody,

after a few weeks of use I would like to review what I find annoying on the Desire, hoping that, at least for some items, future sw upgrades will improve them (or maybe that someone spots mistakes which I am doing):
- Switch-on button is too fast, it should be set for at least one second pressure to really switch on (like for the off). This is a security potential risk: if you forget to set in airplane mode, it is very easy that the phone switches on in flight
- I also experiencced the reset due to excessive heat: while watching a movie, after 40 minutes with external temperature of 30C it restarted, and even worse it freezed at switch on since probably it found the temperature still hot; then you have to remove the battery and this is annoying: why there is no warning when the temperature is getting close to the limit so that you can switch off before the reset?
- The back cover is not easy to remove, very annoying
- There should be a soft reset button to avoid removing the battery
- The Gallery tool is bad, there is no means to set the order followed to show pictures and movies, the real order is unclear to me, sometimes looks according to the time of creation but not always; the most stupid phones allow to chose the order. Moreover you can not list the icons with the name shown
- Pdf viewer does not show the directory, only the list of files grouped according to the dir, but if you have many files you have to scroll all of them without the possibility to jump to the right dir
- The recorder is bad, does not allow to record directly the sound form the phone or the player, and the quality is poor
- It is not possible to remove the start-on song reliably; I used Silent boot but does not work sistematically, moreover the alarm does not work with Silent boot
- Does not seem to be possible to remove or rename scenes, you can only overwrite them

In general there is the feeling of instability, sometimes there are errors which are unexpected and not reproducible. I hope Android/Desire fix the general situation

Best regards

HTC Desire - My feedback after a few weeks use

a few thoughts on your post

dont really get your point about a switch on button? to easy to switch on if your on a plane, i think you might be by your self there.
i find the back cover easy to remove, if it was too easy, it would come off when u didnt want it to.
a soft reset button is quite silly, if you think the off button is too easily pressed and its a security risk, then u could easily accidently press the soft reset button, no phone has a soft reset button, thats what the off button is for.
theres other gallery and pdf replacement in the market if your not happy,
yes agreed the start up noise is very very annoying.
you can easily move and rename themes, go into menu, settings , personalise and you can delete and rename to your hearts content,
and ive watched a full film on my desire and it didnt over heat so i dont know how thats happened, i know the battery dosnt like being used and charged at the same time esp with mobile internet, which can make the phone abit hot, but if i watch a film or episode using the rock player, if its not plugged into the charger, it dosnt even heat up? was you charging your phone while u were watching your film.

HTC Desire - My feedback after a few weeks use

Hi Sirjo,

Thanks for the feedback - there's nothing major here we can help with though, unfortunately, as most of your problems all lie with the actual design and functionality of the device.

Regarding the overheating issue, mine is currently in for repair with HTC for exactly this (can't use it for any longer than 10 minutes running Google Navigation). The problem has gotten a lot worse over time, so I shall see if it comes back any better.

Regarding scenes, it is only the pre-installed scenes you can't alter - your custom scenes can all be renamed, and removed.

Jon

Switch on: if you have a holster or if you put the phone in a bag it is very easy that with a simple touch the phone switches on, with the movements this can easily happen unintentionally

Back cover: my Motorola timeport had a really good deisgn, pushbutton and slide, never removed accidentally. It is not surprising that HTC sells on the web site repacements of the back cover

Reset button: my Palm TX has a pin which you can push with the tip of a staple for instance, can not be reset unintentionally

Thanks for the info on the scenes! About the Gallery, ok, but why not giving a good native tool, avoiding to overload the machine with useless duplications?

Film, I will check if without charging the phone resets, thanks for the suggestion

Best regards

Just a point of note: The overheating issue that some people have is not the only cause of the phone rebooting/switching off and on. It happens randomly too. Hoping that Froyo fixes it. It's not good enough.

Good to know; I checked how it works without charging: I was able to watch a 90 minutes movie without any trouble. This is a lot better.
I like a lot anyway the screen and its resolution.
