Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

I assume so. If it was in 2.2 then it'll be in this. I don't use it so have never checked

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

Just noticed that another conversation has been forwarded to this about the Gingerbread update for HTC Desire by a Vodafone member of staff. Can one of them confirm whether this means that they are recommending this as the way to get the update or if they will actually be supplying an OTA. Why is it so difficult to get them to just confirm if they will be doing it or not? Especially since they have already started updating Desire Z apparently.

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

There has been some confusion over this update, HTC themselves were giving out conflicting information yesterday.

HTC have confirmed they will not be providing an OTA update.

As I understand it's not really feasable to perform this update OTA. (far too risky)

The original Desire has a 250mb system partition which is what the OS + Sense has to fit in to. And 2.3 + Sense wouldn't fit.

The easiest way to get over it is to change the size of the system partition. The problem with this is that instead of just overwriting some old files which is what happens in a normal update, the whole phone needs to be wiped to reset the partition. The phone needs to dump data to somewhere and retrieve it again afterwards to work properly. (This can't really be the SD card (well not without too much risk)).

Hence the need to be physically connected to HTC Sync.

As the Desire Z shipped with a later version of Sense, which was larger, it already had a bigger system partition (350mb), which means that 2.3 and Sense fits, so an OTA update is possible.

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

No, it will overwrite rooted or unrooted.

Beware, there is not yet any way of rooting after updating (or downgrading back to 2.2), so wait a while if you think you may want to root later on.

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

Can you list the differences between 2.2 and 2.3 please. Has the notification bar, menu layout, or anything changed? I understand there is some battery and memory improvments.

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

Theres a few little changes in the notification the font and symbols have changed i think, it turns on faster, not much on the menu has changed as theres no update in the sense. Its faster and the animation from closing an app has changed. Im happy i did it. Just hoping there will be a way to root it if i need to...

It has them there already as it's a WWE (World Wide English) ROM so has all operator settings in it

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

Just my two cents worth regarding a "forced" upgrade to 2.3:

Phone:

Approx 15 month old HTC Desire running standard Froyo VF branded.

Problem:

Yesterday crashed and won't boot - gets stuck at white screen with HTC logo - nothing else.

Tried all kinds of ideas - including (gulp) clear storage etc from boot menu.

Nothing would fix so assuming crash caused data corruption.

Phone crashes a few times a day - generally overheating and reboots.

Solution:

With nothing to lose downloaded the HTC 2.3 release - and from the boot menu (vol down and power-up) put phone in to fastboot USB mode or something like that.

Installer able to detect phone and now happily back up and running using gingerbread.

All seems pretty good so far - still had it overheat once and reboot but not long till upgrade I suppose.

Positive notes:

- Faster performance

- More storage space avail without unrequired bundeld apps

- SIP support great for internet calling

- Not specific to the GB upgrade - but highly recommend latest Skype upgrade supporting two way video! (shame no front-facing cam on Desire but that can wait till next upgrade.)

Al

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

@EddyOS

Is this the same or similar to the ROM you have made? Or is yours more stripped down etc?

Re: HTC Desire No Gingerbread

Perhaps this topic title be changed to 'HTC Desire Gingerbread No VF Comment' :smileywink:. I was pointed to this thread from Twitter where they appear to be unable to 'say' anything useful. No difference here then!

cheers
