HTC Desire image compression

[ Edited ]

Hi

I have an HTC Desire HD, The big selling point for me was the camera and large image size/quality.

Up until the last update when i send messages they were compressed to approx 300k (perfectly for my business needs) when sending them via MMS, since the last update they are now compressing to about 50K (not good at all) when sending exactly the same image. Please see the attached images to see what i mean (not the greatest pic but only one i had before the update)

What is going on? The images being sent are awful, pixilated and blockey.

Can anyone offer any help as this doesn't seem to be just me there are several posts on the internet all from people on vodafone but no answers.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

have you tried going into

messages > settings

scroll to the bottom and there is a 'message maximum size'. it should tell you what size the mms will be compressed to. try resetting it to 300 and see if that makes a difference.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Afternoon! If you're having problems try using GOSMS, they have a feature called go mms which doesn't compress and doesn't send as mms, sends as SMS with link and uploads image to their server. Quite cool :-)

I've noticed this too on my Desire S, looks to be a bug if that is indeed the purpose of that setting. I have max message size set to 300k here:

(List all apps) > Messages > tap Menu button > Settings > Multimedia messages (MMS) > Maximum message size

In spite of this when I send a picture via mms it is shrunk down to less than 60K

Mr H I give you the same suggestion . The only thing you need is an internet connection. Doesn't cost mms price either

Re: HTC Desire image compression

The 'maximum size' setting has no relation to the image compression. That setting is there because some carriers have different size limits for mms. Vodafone (as you're aware) is 300kb. I believe the image resize is done by the gallery app you use. Try using an alternative gallery such as QuickPic. I actually use that as my default gallery, very nice to use :-)

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Thanks all

Max size is set to 300k as it always has been have tried resetting but no joy

Using the standard gallery app that comes with the phone same as before the update will try a different app just in case.

My partner has a desire S on orange which also had an update recently and has had no issues still sends at 300k. Gallery on the Desire s is the same app as the HD.

All info i can find points to vodafone.

I have exactly the same problem with my Desire HD. Was fine until Gingerbread update but now it will only send images at 55kb ish over MMS.  No idea why as 300kb limit selected in phone.  App problem? Android problem or vodafone problem?  Either way as a contract customer if anybody at vodafone is reading this please look into and get back to us with a solution.  Thank you.

Just tried installing Quickpic and setting as default gallery app. Used the share button in Quickpic and selected message. Image attached and resized down to tiny grainy image as before. Next to try a different message app as a work around.

Just tested and using Handcent, attaching images works fine. Images resized to under 300kb however image not recieved by recipient who is also on Vodafone.

I have a friend with a Desire HD on Orange and his works fine with the standard messaging app when sending images and I can receive them just fine. Strangely I can even forward the larger received image on, without it resizing. Confused.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Hmm I wonder if this is something Vodafone implemented in the update to save data use on the MMS network and free up space on the store and forward servers for more MMS messages. From the little I know of MMS, I think its basically data sent to a store and forward server (and is forwarded to the other persons carriers store and forward with a HTTP front end) which sends an SMS with a link to the data on the server then its downloaded to the receiving phone. I think. Maybe someone who knows more can expand or correct!!! If they can free up space on the servers more messages can be sent = more money in VF's pocket.

Just a thought :smileyhappy:

You are almost certainly right and thank you for the response. I'm now being told the mms I sent with Handcent has arrived (took a very long time) but that the attached image is reduced to the quality of the standard messaging app. That means vodafone servers have further compressed it once it left my handset. However the recipient isn't all that tech savvy so I've tried again with a mate who's on the 3 network with an iphone. As yet no reply so again I think vodafone servers are holding up the mms, reducing the image size then sending it on. Will have to wait and see to confirm.

Just odd that I didn't have this issue until the android update but I guess vodafone tweaked something at that point. Is this something everybody is suffering with? I'd have thought there would have been a lot more posts about it if they were. I use Whatsapp whenever possible to send images but for friends who's handsets can't install it, I use standard mms. Or at least I did but I don't bother anymore as the image they recieve is so small it's not worth sending.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

I'm not too sure who's affected to be honest. Not a lot of people have reported it if they are but then again if you hardly send them and your not really bothered about the quality as long as you can see it then you won't notice it I guess. I will check tonight with a mate and see what size pictures he was receiving off me. I seem to be receiving between about 60 and 140kb but he's got an iphone on 02.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

OK had another quick try with another Desire HD that is on vodafone.  Same issue.  There are three of them in the office here but only the one on Orange can send decent quality images via mms.  Using Handcent results in the mms taking a very long time to arrive (if at all) and when the message does arrive, the image has been compressed down to 55kb ish in transit.  Postage stamp in middle of screen.  Looks like vodafone did indeed introduce some kind of limit to mms size that ignores the phone settings and even when worked around using an app like Handcent, their servers reduce the image size anyway.

Ah well, no more mms for me for a while and no mms fees added to my monthly bill.  At least I can send just about anything I like with Whatsapp at no extra cost just not to all of my contacts.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Have you tried using GoSMS? They have a separate feature called GoMMS which stores full image on their server and I believe it sends a link to the recipient

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Hi Vampfy,

Thanks for the suggestion.  Yes I have looked at a few similar apps that send a link to a full res image.  That's fine for me but some people I send images to don't have data allowances on their contracts so to keep it simple I use mms for them.

An update on Handcent mms.  The larger images take a lot longer to arrive (no surprise there) but they are getting through eventually (approx 45minutes) and when sending to a non vodafone handset the images arrive at the size sent.  I'm yet to confirm if sending an image via Handcent to a vadafone handset results in the image being reduced to 55kb.  I'm being told that they are but I'm not convinced that isn't the recipients handset simply displaying them small and can't get to it as yet to check for myself.

Cheers

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Hi 3484jacks,

Did you get chance to check the size of images your mate is receiving from you?

Cheers

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Well I asked him last night but he said iPhone has no option to see the size of the image. I don't believe that but I could't be bothered to argue.

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Don't mean to revive an old and ignored topic *glares at Vodafone yet again* but I have this issue too. A friend with the same phone on a different carrier is fine. Please stop messing my phone up Vodafone!!!!! God dammit.

I came here due to the recent GPS issues but can see no fix for this either, any MMS I send looks crap once its gone, just a pixelated mess. Again, updates seem to just ruin perfectly functioning features.

Any help here?

Re: HTC Desire image compression

Hi everyone

Sorry for the lack of replies so far. I'm looking into this now and will update the thread as soon as I have any information.

In the mean time, if anyone affected by the issue could confirm whether the compression occurs when sending from an alternative app to another network, this would be very helpful.

I'll be back as soon as possible

Thanks

J
