Hello,

My HTC Desire is offering up a new system update to version 2.33.161.6 (it's currently on version 2.33.161.2)

Does anyone know what this update does?

HTC said the patent in question related to a small user-interface feature often called "data tapping", which allowed users to grab embedded information, such as a phone number, and do something with it, such as make a call.

The company said it would completely remove it from all their phones soon.

it would be good to get some clarity on what this update is all about. Particularly if it is going to remove some useful functionality.

I just tried to update to the .6 OTA release but it failed twice giving me a red exclamation mark after the green update status bar had only gotten 1/4 the way to complete. I had to pull the battery to get the phone to respond and I still do not have the .6 update. Luckily the phone didn't turn into a brick.

I certainly have no inclination to try to install this upgrade without knowing what is in it - especially given Vodafone's history of adding unsolicited, functionally deficient extras to their builds.

Do you know if this update gets rolled out in stages? I've just checked my phone and there are no updates showing. I'm on 2.29.405.14 CL345208.

You have an unbranded Desire so will not get your updates from Vodafone. You get yours from HTC directly (and that is the latest unbranded version)
