Hello, I am having a problem with my Desire S. No matter how long I press the power button, I can't get the options up to power off or aiplane mode etc. The only way I can turn off is to remove the battery. Can someone help please?

I would backup your phone and do a Hard reset. It sounds like the firmware has got corrupted.
Turn the power off.
Hold the Volume Down button
Press and hold the Power button until the device turns on
You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
Press and release the Power button
Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
All data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC

I had this issue a few weeks back, I had selected encryption on the internal storage, not sure why but some subsequent updates can apparently cause an issue, anyway this worked for me:
1. Settings --> Storage --> Encryption uncheck
2. Encryption --> check and re-enter password
3. Home screen, press power button.
At the moment I dont have storage encryption set, and Ive not had the problem but I do have a different handset. Its worth a try before you hard reset.
