Randomly downloadin g huge amounts of data

My Desire has started randomly downloading huge amounts of data, 100mb+ in an evening, when it is in one particular area - BT12 in Belfast. I go away for days and it is fine, come back and the upload and download icons can be permanently lit up for ages. At the particular spot where it happens the connection icon is constantly flicking from E to G to 3G to 3G+ to H. I've tried a data usage monitoring app, which shows the huge amount of data being downloaded, but does not pick up any particular apps doing it. The phone just sits there trying to download the entire Internet. My usual data usage is 10 - 20mb a day.

Hi FrewheelinJack,
I can understand your frustrations with this issue.
It's hard to say exactly what is causing the issue without knowing what you have got on your phone. When you download new apps it will say if uses data. Also with Android handset, widgets will also use data as they are constantly updating. If you have work exchange account on your phone that updates calendar, emails and contacts at regular intervals, then will also use quite a bit of data.
If it appears to be all in one go, have you downloaded an email with a big attachment?
If the handset is switching between G, E, 3G and EDGE you will be on border of an area with 3G and it is switching to make sure you keep a reliable signal.
If you can't find any apps that using a lot of data, then I would suggest removing then installing the apps that update to see if this improves the situation.

this wont be somthing that your phone is doing, this will be something that an app is doing.
if you could tell us ALL of your apps on your phone, then i might be able to help with which app might be doing this (even games can try to download additional information)
and just to make sure its not a google app - deselct the autosync button to make sure its not that.
then see if it still try's downloading the whole internet lol.

Install an app like TrafficStats Lite or Network Counter or similar. It will show you how much data is sent/received by each app.

Hi FrewheelinJack,
Would you mind posting the results of you data issue? did you track down the cause?
I look after a number of Vodafone handsets and am seeing this issue more and more.
Thanks
John
