HTC Desire series

I'm travelling to the US next month, and expect to be far away from wireless signals, but keen to get online so I'm thinking that buying a PAYG SIM with data allowance woudl be a good option to avoid the exorbitant data roaming charges that VF levy. Does anyone have any experience of this? Do I need to look for anything particular about the SIM or the provider to be sure it's good for my Desire HD and data usage?
