1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

Hi Guys

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with the 1.28.161.9 update!

After installing the OTA update my phone reboots itself if I try and play a video, whether its a downloaded clip or a clip I recorded using the phone, it even reboots when I try using youtube! :smileysad:

HTC Customer services suggested I take it back to the Vodaphone store as its under 28days old, can I insist on a new phone or will they repair it??

Any info would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi waynecullis,

This sound like a software issue. Have you tried a Factory Reset on the phone?

This should fix the issue though you will lose all of your data so make sure you have a backup before doing it.

If this doesn't fix it then your only option is to have the phone repared or replaced.

Thanks for the reply :smileyhappy:

Factory restore didnt fix the problem (menu restore or pwr+vol down) so the store has sent it for repair, 5 working days from Monday!! :-(

Any idea if the repair will come back with 1.28.161.9 or ..401.9??

Regards

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

If you purchased your handset from Vodafone it will be returned with 161.9.
401.9 is the version number for the open market handset ie those purchased in full from the likes of Amazon.

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

this too happened to mine It was swapped out today and when I tried to carry out upgrade as instructed when I put my sim in and switched on did the same thing. The download of rhe ROM seemed smooth enoughbut after switching off and rebooting the handset screen showed a progress bar and again it seemed to progress normally, the bar then went away leaving only the green arrow pointing downwards with ring around it.  This stayed on screen for 2 hours power was plugged in during this and it ran the battery empty and the red charging led went out and the screen dark.

I took out charging cable and plugged back in, led flashed intermittently for 20 seconds and then stayed illuminated steady the phone buzzed abd the phone restarted by itself, htc splash screen then vodafone splash then black and message flashed up stating it was amending apps to run with upgrade 1 of 6  2of 6 etc and phone started as expected.

Any app like music, radio, jetski game demo, youtube all result in a black or frozen screen a forced restart and boot up normally then message wanting to sent details of abnormal termination report to HTC.

This has happened on two handsets now the second still has the screes protector still on and given no use.

If I make a calll once the screen goes into powersave when talking it will not come back on pressing the power button and screen stays black and needs a hard reset to terminate call.

i have tried to run factory reset but screen splash onlt shows HBOOT in blue box and below checking sd card update....

then freezes again on that screen.

please help I am fearing that the handset has been rushed to market too quickly and is still buggy

Hi there lor-dky,

Thanks for informing us about this. I'm really sorry the replacement is suffering with the same symptoms as your old phone.

In all fairness, if the hardboot isn't working then I'd be inclined to contact us for a further replacement.

Cheers,

Lee

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

Hi lor-dky,

I've just experienced exactly the same issues as you've described - I really should get into the habit of looking for reported problem BEFORE carry out an upgrade...but then again I guess I shouldn't really expect an upgrade to totally ruin the phone.

I've not yet tried to make a call with the phone...sort of dreading that as well now.

Really annoyed that after calling Vodafone 3 times today and even going in store I'm no better off or any the wiser. Looks Like I'll have to wait until after the bank holiday here and try to get a replacement and maybe I'll hold off carrying out any updates until I hear that they're 'safe' or these issues have been rectified.

This WILL be the last HTC phone I get as it's been nothing nut trouble. Initially it was a minor problem that I could live with i.e. the alarm clock randomly stopped working after 4 or 5 days (not enough to prompt me to return the phone and swap for something else - but looking back maybe it was a sign of things to come!!!).

The next issue, which was more of an issue was then I tried to use Google maps to navigate may way around London but every time I enabled GPS the phone thought it was in the middle of the Mediterranean!!!!!!!

Oh, and not to mention the fact that the phone also wipes all of the magnetic strips on all of my travel cards (train) and car parking tickets as well if kept in the same pocket - never an issue with my HTC Desire :smileysad:

The phone is obviously less than a month old and I've got a feeling I'm going to spend the rest of the 2 year contract with a phone that just continually requires sending back. Maybe I should do as advised by the local Vodafone store when I said I wanted to change it for a different model due to all of the ongoing problems..."sell it, you'll get a good price for it as it's a really new model and get buy another one!

Has anyone seen or heard of a fix for this continuous crashing issue yet? (apart from get a replacement phone and do NOT upgrade the software)

Thank you for your post and a very warm welcome to the eForum.:smileyhappy:

Please can you back up all of your contacts and information, then perform a factory reset.

If you are still experiencing these issues please take the device to your local store and one of our experts will be able to take a look and advise you of your best options or alternatively we can arrange a postal repair.

Many Thanks

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

Hi DaveCD, I've already tried a factory reset and the device still reboots every time i try to launch anything 'graphical'. I've also been in store, two in fact...the first was my local branch where I got the phone from on an existing business contract after contacting customer services on the weekend. The last person I spoke to there (3 calls made in total) said that because it was under 30 days old I should be able to get a direct replacement from the store I actually picked it up from. The manager of this store told me that this information was incorrect and that it had to be within 7 days. During a long discussion about options available to me he even suggested "as it's a new phone you could always sell it, get a good price for it and buy yourself a different model". I've just returned from a store which is local to the office which is in London, not my local branch, and the assistant manager there informed me that managers have a discretionary 28 day replacement option (obviously the first manager decided he didn't want to do that) and that for business customers they simply go by this option (again, this is obviously discretionary but something they always do). Having read other reviews of this device and the fact that others have replacments that then corrupt on update I'm very reluctant to go for the next day replacement option - which I believe is going to be a refurbished unit?!?! My other option is to send it directly back to HTC myself (already discussed with them but that's another story) and let them try to resolve the issues. This has pros and cons - obviously I'll need an alternate device for the duration of the repair, the plus being...I get to keep the same device (actually, not sure if that IS a good thing!). Any further suggestions/options are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

Sorry, I appear to be having formatting issues when using the iPad to post. I'm really disappointed with the One X, was hoping it would be more stable than the Desire which I always had niggles with. I think this will definitely be my last HTC product. I've got 4 devices with Vodafone, 3 phones and an iPad...after all the running around I had this weekend and being told different things by different people I'm actually wondering if I should also let my contracts lapse as they expire. Reluctant to do this as have been with Vodafone for years.

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

Hi pressbutton,

When it comes to the handset, it is covered by warranty and a free of charge repair can be performed.

However if the handset is within the first 7 days then we can also offer an exchange (like for like or different).

Once you have gone past this point the next step would be a free of charge repair as mentioned above, however as you have only had the phone for less than 30 days I would like to look at any other possible options available to you.

So that we can do this I have sent you a quick PM with our direct contact details, please follow the instructions on the PM and one of the team will be able to take a look at this for you.

You can find your PM inbox here.

James

HTC Advises that you do NOT have the charger plugged in during any update to the phones firmware, as it may interfere with the update process.

Re: 1.28.161.9 update broke my One X!!!

I changed my phone for the full 12 hours or so, started it up off charge and did the update as requested when it started.

If I try to watch a video on youtube, start the music player or change the alarm tone the phone resets itself.  Every time.

I see not everyone that's upgraded is having this problem so assuming it's the handset as it's standard settings.  I brought it via the phone but I'll be down the vodafone shop in the morning to take it back, not impressed. Assuming it's the handset with a fault?

Not sure HTC/Vodafone have done enough testing on this update! I got my handset back from repair, I use the term loosely, only to find the same issue! The guy in the store wasn't impressed and immediately exchanged it for a new one. Unfortunately after using it for a few days I began to experience issues loosing SIM communication, took the handset back to the Vodafone store only to be told the problem was due to the fact I had an Apple SIM!!! They installed it in the first place! They changed the SIM and assured me this would fix the prob. No chance, after a few hours it lost the SIM again :smileysad: So, back to the branch I go! I'm on handset number 3 in 6 weeks. Needless to say I haven't installed the 1.28.161.9.
Come on HTC/Vodafone this is a very poor performance, very reminiscent of Micro$oft, get it 95% right then let Joe Public find the remaining bugs!
I went from a Magic to a Desire and now the One X, only the One X has let me down, come on HTC renew my faith!
