HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Hi,

I have a HTC One X that is a couple of days old.  I have noticed that if the phone is unlocked and I immediately try and scroll to a different home screen the screen can lag slightly. After a few scrolls the lag goes away and then it is smooth until it is left idol for a while and then the delay is back when I unlock and scroll...

Also, if the phone is charging (using the charger that came with the phone or my old HTC Desire HD Charger - so it’s not a charger problem), the problem is much worse and I need to scroll really slowly to get the page to turn.  If I scroll quickly the phone either does nothing or an app opens showing that the phone is interpreting the swipe as a "tap" on an app.

Is this a common problem or do I have a faulty handset??

I have updated the software to 1.28.161.9

I am coming from a desire HD which suffers from neither of these scroll / lag problems and is nowhere near as powerful so I’m not sure what the problem is.

If anyone knows of a fix or if other owners can let me know if they have the same problem that would be great...to replicate my issue, leave your phone alone with the screen off, then unlock it and quickly scroll to a different screen - I experience a slight lag for the first 3-4 swipes then its fine...and as I say, plugged in, the screen becomes very unresponsive and only very slow swipes have the desired effect.  So disappointing!

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Here is a video of the issue...this is actually me with my phone...

Voda Tech, can you please take a look at the video and advise how "normal" this is? I only got my micro sim yesterday so i assume I have until Saturday 19th May to send back if its faulty...Thanks

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Hi carimba

Thank you for your post and it is great to see you again.:smileyhappy:

Watching your video certainly does not replicate the smooth use of the phone from the ones I have experienced.

You are able to return the device within 7 days of receipt, this can also be exchange for a new device.

Please take the device to your local store and one of our experts will be able to take a look and advise you of your best options or alternatively we can arrange a postal repair.

Many Thanks

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Hi

I had an issue very similar to this with my One X - it turned out to be one of the widgets on one of the home screens causing the problem: I removed apps/widgets one at a time until I found the culprit - as soon as I removed the Google play widget the problem disappeared. Got to be worth a try.

 Thanks Pdmoulsher,

I factory reset the phone and it still did it with nothing installed on the phone or placed on the homescreen other than core apps / widgets that the phone boots up with for the first time so i think I just got unlucky with a faulty device...New one on its way so i wont lose any sleep! ;-)

I'll watch out for that Google Play widget though!  Not sure why a core android Widget (that is central to the Android experience) doesnt work on the Platform's flagship device!  Hopefully they roll out some quick fixes to these minor, but irritating bugs.  Hopefully the new device is fine though...

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Carlmba,

I too suffer with the same problem, on occasions. Not ALL the time, but when it does happen, it is VERY frustrating (especially when an app opens, when that was NOT the intention).

I find this happens more so when the phone is laying flat and charging, so I have naturally (albeit wrongly) assumed this may be simply due to the fact the handset is on charge....

VERY annoying.. Be interesting to see if your replacement behaves the same?

Cheers

Hi Kevin,

I have now had 3 HTC One Xs.  The last one is operating fine BUT there is a big caveat!  I have not put anything on the home screens other than app links and the main HTC clock - ie no widgets other than the HTC clock. This is becasue I read that the widgets may be causing the issue...who knows??!  However, I did try the following widgets and they all casued homescreen stutter when scrlling...

APW Facebook / Twitter

Friendstream - native HTC So very annoying it casues an issue

HTC Sence Twitter - as above...HTC said some developers do not test their widgets before releasing them to ensure compatibility...hmmm

Oh, and I also think the screen heating up as a result of constantly being on while charging is a bad mixture.  Im not tecnical but this may interfere with capacitive technology - that said, my new phone seems okay and i was charging and using at the same time for quite a bit when i set it up.

I also dont discount the fact that the Vodafone version of this software could be the issue!  If I could get stock HTC Sense 4, I would.  I have no intention of using the Vodafone aps and all they do is take up space and RAM and the constant update message (even though i set it to not update me) is irritating.

Anyway, im happy with the hardware and I am hoping that the software catches up becasue this phone and indeed all android handsets are intended for widget use!  If I wanted an app only handset, i'd go get an apple device!

So my advice, delete widgets from the screen one by one and test the screen responsiveness inbetween each delete.  You will eventually find a culprit.  You may not, could just be a batch of faulty devices given this does not seem widespread - but then maybe some people are not as fussy as me!!  I wanted instant screen movement with no jitter given this phone is much more powerful than my Desire HD which NEVER suffered from stutter no matter what widget i loaded on it 0 even when I was sunning a One S ROM on it - ie ICS / Sense 4 ... so my view is this issue is HTC One X specific / Vodafone ROM specific as opposed to widget developers not accounting for the new Android / Sense software!!

Early days and hopefully they improve the user experience with future OTA updates...

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Well put Carl(mba) :-)

I too have come from a DesireHD. The "stutter/judder" as you call it (or the inability to horizontal, and indeed vertically, scroll, at times when charging is VERY annoying, but doesn't happen ALL the time, which makes it more frustrating to not be able to pinpoint the cause. I've HALF convinced myself that it is a function whilst charging and horizontal!!  :-(

Front screen widgets? HTC Clock, and weather. That's it. I also have shortcuts to Dolphin, CamScanner, Facebook, QuickPic, Calendar, tweetcaster, Camera360, and Dropbox. What I HAVE found (not related to the odd times the scrolling ceases), is that after a reboot of the phone, the NAMES of Dolphin, and Camscanner vanish!!! icons are there, but NAMES have gone. Need to remove and re-add the shortcut for them to appear. This is also the same with CoPilot Live, and Flickr. NAMES of the icons vanish, so need to remove the wholl icon, and then re-add.

Another couple of annoying grumbles.... There is no Start-up tone (have you noticed that?), with the Vodabranded handset. It's only a small thing, but at least one knew when the phone was ready to be used. It starts silently now (unless you can inform me otherwise, at which point....

I have also noticed a 4 second delay in videoing. Press the video record button, and it doesn't actually start recording straightaway, but 4 seconds later. ANNOYING..

And, of course, the battery life. Not impressed  :-( For the first week, I did not use the OneX with a sim card inserted. I simply charged and discharged a few cycles. Notably, the phone, on standby, lasted around 23hours. Great (I thought). Using the phone connected with its sim, I am lucky to get 8 hours (moderate use of Facebook, e-mails, internet use). And there was me thinking battery would NOT be an issue. I feel QUITE let-down by this. At least with the HD, one was able to change the battery.

With the OneX I am quite reluctant to use it (camera/mail/FB)  much, when out and about, as I know it won't last the day.

Cheers

Hmmm,

Are you on the latest software - 1.28.xx?  I get well over 24 hours on full radio / constant wifi and light to moderate usage!  I wond not complain about the battery at all although with the screen on, battery drops very quickly - I think i tracked that it is by far the biggest drain on resource and from full charge to near zero, my screen had been on for just over 3hrs...so not fantastic if you watch films on it etc...

But overnight, I lose 0%!!!  Thats immense!  So, you may have an issue if yours is dying so quickly.  To give you live data:

4.75hrs off charge

22% of battery used

of this

39% screen - which equals 18 mins (!)

17% Android OS

14% Wi-Fi

11% Cell standby

10% Phone idle

3% Facebook

etc

Anyway, it is going to last a full 24hrs so im not too fussed.  I was out with it all day too recently so i dont just get good battery when at home on wi-fi (ie not using mobile data)...I even used it to track my position on google maps for a while to test it...it took a lot longer to lock my position than my ipad did.  I was on a train so maybe that didnt help (ie no direct line of sight to the sky...but the point is that it was doing something intensive for about 20 mins and after a full day of being out 8am to 7pm, I hade over 30% battery left...So thats one thing I cant knock...in fact, it is the best smartphone ive had for battery...if I give it a break about the screen!!  But where it loses points for that, it gainst them for not losing battery during the night...My desire HD would lose over 15% when on stock ROM...I got that down to 8% (ie 1% an hour) when i put a custom rom on it and used aps like juice defender...

So, long one short...your battery should be something you are happy with...even the "faulty" One Xs i had were okay on battery.

Oh, and the video recording...its not instant but its not much more than 1 second (could actually be less!) dely from pressing record to getting the tone / recording starts...I would not notice it and at this speed I would not see it as a gripe so if yours is nearly 4 times slower, something may not be right...if you can swap it or get it to a Vodafone store, id probably do that and compare to another device...If like me you have this for 2 years, you want to be happy with it...

I was tempted to wait until the Galaxy S3 but I hear the build quality on the One X beats the S3 hands down and when all is said and done, build quality is what im after... come this time next year, id be very surprised if im running stock voda / HTC software so the software at launch is almost irrelevant when you have a 24 month contract!  Besides, half the things the S3 markets are useless...auto dial from text, siri type voice commands, etc etc, gimmicks if you ask me...the next pure android phone (ie the galaxy nexus' predecesor) will probably be the android device to move things along - the S3 is not as spectacular as we may have hoped...

Good luck

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Cheers Carl,

Yep, latest (although 1.29 is looming somewhere), I am using 1.28

Overnight is when I put the phone on charge, from about 0:30 - 06:30, so couldn't say if it "doesn't lose overnight" (maybe I'll try that) During the preceeding day I use the phone (don't watch movies, nor listen to music), with calls, internet, FB, G+, listening for mails every hour, and it does seem to use significant battery. Perhaps I use the phone more than I feel I do?

Then, if I use the car, as soon as I get in the car the phone goes on charge. If I take some images whilst "out and about", then again this seems to SIGNIFICANTLY use power. When at home, invariably I will have it on charge in case I need to go out, so as to ensure I have good power.

With the video, I have actually Pressed the button, and at the same time started to count. My recorded voice (on the video) starts at FOUR (that's counting 1/second, near as damn it) ("one, and, two, and, three, and") as oppposed to one, two, three. I did also pop into a Vodastore, and TMobile, and did the same on their OneX's, to find similar.

I will, again, check the power use tomorrow, and see what resutls I get, WITHOUT charging it through the day (and without use of the phone). Obviously, this is pretty subjective, as to what is running, but I'm sure a mean average would suffice.

Cheers

I just lost my post...long and short was it takes my phone 2.1 secs to start recording - i timed it by filming a stopwatch.

And try and do full power cycles with your phone - full charge to nearly full discharge...i always do that and i get good usage out of a battery...I shouyld get more over time as ive only had this a couple of days

Good luck

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Thanks Carl,

I DID power cycle my phone (full charge, leave to discharge, full charge, leave to discharge) three or four times in the first week, where I wasn't using it (was still using the sim in my HD).

Just as a further "acid test" I WILL stopwatch time the video, although I think my counting was fairly close as "per second" beats.

I know these ar only "small" niggles, but I feel they are fundimentally warranted as issues.

Cheers

Hi Kevin,

Its a new phone - you need to be happy so my view raise all your concerns! ;-)

For info here are my battery stats...

Up time 1 day, 3hrs, 38mins

26% remaining

Of the 74% used...

Screen - 37%

Voice Calls - 25%

Cell stand by - 9%

Wifi - 9%

Phone Idle -8%

Android OS - 5%

Camera 3%

etc

Screen on for 1hr 58mins

Voice calls - 53 mins

As I say, im happy with that performance...so it is possible...

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Carl,

Thanks for continuing this thread. It's very helpful.

So, this morning, see the following stats and attached image file, then you'll see what I mean by the amount of power which is being used.

By the way, the screen brightness is set to AUTO (I note your screen use reflects 37% overall)

Anyway..

77% Not Charging

2hs 44m 7s on battery  (from an overnight charge, as normal)

Screen                             52%

Voice                                21%

WiFi                                    5%

mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrows  5%     (This is DolphinHD browser)

Android o/s                        4%

Cell standby                       4%

Phone idle                          3%

Facebook                           2%

Maps                                  2%

Android system                 2%

Running 1.28 s/w

So, I'm sure you can see my frustration  :-(

Cheers

As may be seen from the above three screen dumps, I'll be lucky if it lasts 8 hours, and this is WITHOUT playing any music or videos. I did take a couple of images (stills, not videos), and updated/looked at Facebook a few times, as well as viewing Google+, so NOT "heavy" use throughout the time. Came off charge at about 07:00 (in fact you'll see that, from the "on battery" field.

[ Edited ]

That battery usage definitely seems a bit odd.

For reference this is what I have just taken from my device, running the same software etc.

Obviously I don't have the phone calls that you have, but I do have around 33 minutes of GPS tracking instead.

Seems like your battery is really taking a pasting by something, but I'd have thought a rogue program would show up higher and more obviously on your usage chart. One for HTC to look into I would say.

I agree Kevin, looks a bit suspect.  How long was your screen on for?  Click on the "screen" text when you are on the same area as per my screenshot - that will tell you your screen up time...

My phone has been sitting on my desk doing nothing all day - sent about 12 sms and only made one phone call for less than 5 mins but as you can see, my battery is reeeaallly lasting me!!

I have not done anything special...

The screen is the killer - if you get 3hrs from your screen, you are doing well.

Re: HTC One X Scroll / Home screen lag

Thanks Seb, for your "support".

8hrs 45mins and still 39%.... wow!!

As I noted to carl, I had been using FB, but not OVERLY extensive, but this is difficult to gauge I guess, as is rather subjective.

I too use Endomondo, which I shall be doing tomorrow, and I'll again see what the usage is after that. Normally use Endo for about 1.5 - 2.00 hours, whilst on tracking.

Cheers
