One X GPS Issues

I'm on my 3rd One X and about to call again to get another replacement as I'm constantly seeing issues with my GPS location.
If I use google track, the path recorded if I walk between two points is like a random walk all around the path I actually took.
If I use the GPS Status app and stand still, my location, speed and direction is constantly changing.
Google Navigation is useless as it thinks I keep turning off down side roads and suddenly start going backwards etc.
I have reset the aGPS data, performed several factory resets but nothing helps.
When I was on phone number 2, I contacted HTC and they were pretty sure it was a hardware fault as they apparently aren't aware of any widespread GPS issues. So they recommended getting a replacement (again).
So I did and phone number 3 has the same problem.
My wife also has a One X and it has worked perfectly from day one.
Has anybody else seen problems with GPS? Is it a dodgy batch from HTC or something? I am considering changing to an S3, but I do love the One X apart from these issues.

Hello funkydom,
Thanks for your post. Three in a row must be rather annoying!
I don't know what to suggest as you seem to have tried everything already.
It's up to you as to what you do. Your options are to return the HTC One X and revert the commitment end date and upgrade when the Galaxy SIII is launched, or have another replacement. These suggestions are only applicable if you are within 7 days of receiving the last device.
Cheers,
Lee

I am also having GPS issues and am on my second handset with the third coming on Tuesday. As I sit here my phone appears to be travelling up and down the road at high speed . This happens on Google Maps and Mytracks. Mytracks wildy overstates speed and distance.
So what is the cause of this? Does anyone know and will the third handset be exactly the same? Is it hardware or software or both? I am on Android 4.0.3 and software number 1.28.161.9 with no updates apparently available.
The Vodafone customer service (?) guy said he had had no complaints since few people use GPS because of the drain on the battery but didn't offer any reason just a replacement.
Could some tech guy from Vodafone or user help please!! This phone is not fit for purpose.

Hi
Mikepup,
To be honest when it comes to the GPS it is difficult to say as there are a number of factors that can affect how well it works including whether or not it uses GPS or A-GPS, the ability to find a satellite, the network coverage in that area and the different apps that you are using.
I would see how the new handset goes but also possibly look at different apps to see if you notice any improvements.

Thanks James for this
Well let's take my most commonly ised app. My tracks. It works fine wth my old HTC Desire. With the new HTC One X it is all over the place wandering up and down the road at 50mph. I am a Park Ranger and I need a viable GPS app for navigation.
All the indications are that the new HTC One X has a major problem and frankly my two handsets have not been fit for purpose. I am afraid from a tech position your suggestion is inadequate. I have another app, Viewranger which is just as bad and I've spent over £20 on OS maps for the app.
So my third handset arrives on Tuesday. i will see how this goes but I don't hold up much hopes. You are selling a mobile that does not work properly with GPS.
I would expect the Tech team wth HTC to provide me wth a specific solution. My next step is PC Pro and BBC Click for advcice.
Again my request is simple. Please suggest a solution which inviolves me continuing to use my current apps which after all are Android apps.
Thanks
Mike

Not that this helps with the problem directly, but I tested my One X out recently after reading about the GPS woes some people were having. I'm also running Android 4.0.3 and Software No. 1.28.161.9.
I tend to use it while mountain biking to track routes etc but in this case I just took a simple walk up the road.
It appears the first trip recorded (and the first ever GPS use for the phone in this case) was somewhat erratic.
The second trip seems to be a lot more stable.
I'll have to test it again on a bike journey that I know the distance for properly and see where that gets me. I hope it's ok as I use GPS a lot and really do need a phone to provide the service accurately.
Anyway, basically what I'm saying is it seems that on first use the GPS seems a bit sketchy, but after that it's tidied itself up a bit. So I'm thinking it's more of a specific handset problem as opposed to a general One X problem across the board. I hope yours gets sorted out ok.
Just a quick thought - have you allowed 'fine' GPS recording on your device or are you running 'coarse' detail?

Vodafone customer service were equally as vague with me - they said they'd had no complaints about this handset and certainly no GPS issues.
I do find it hard to believe as I will be on my 4th phone (when it finally arrives, was due Friday but didn't turn up).

I reset the aGPS data and it is currently using the freshly downloaded data. Network coverage is generally fine - the problem even exhibits itself when I am on wifi at home.
Even with a lock on 6 or more satellites the problem is seen.
I am using google maps, google track and GPS Status. All show the same problem.

I've found this being discussed over on XDA - they seem to think its a hardware issue there but nobody knows for sure...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1
According to that thread, another mobile company revealed that they're out of stock due to high volume of returns. Is there a big coverup going on here?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your posts here.
So that we can get this raised to our devices teams for investigation and raise to HTC if the fault can be replicated, please can you let me know the following details;
The software version that you are using:
Apps where you see the issue:
Brief description of the issue:
Once we have 3 or more examples with this information I can then get the ball rolling on this for you.
James

Great ! ![]()
Just spent £40 on a HTC D110 car holder yesterday, and today began testing different sat nav apps only to come across this same issue and see this post. Thankfully I have not yet spent anymore money.
There are loads of people having the same issue, and not just in the UK and not just on Vodafone. Here is a video on Youtube that shows exactly the problem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN4neaX1xVI
This is what mine is also doing, jumping round, consantly moving etc etc. I have tried it with Google Maps and Navigation, HTC Locations and Co-Pilot and all are terrible.
For further evidence of people also having these issues then take a look:

http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/HTC/HTC-One-X-GPS-pro
http://www.htcforums.com/one-x/10656-gps-issues.ht
I am running the latest software (1.28.161.9)
Hope this gets sorted quickly as I wanted to use this to go across Europe in the next couple of months.

Hello James
HTC have advised me today that they released a version 1.29..... of the software at the beginning on May. It looks as though Vodafone has not yet released this and this could be causing the issues. When will the new version be released?
The third handset comes today so I will check which version this has.
Thanks
Mike

The s/w version is 1.28.161.9
Apps where I have seen the issue: google maps, Google Navigation, google tracks, GPS Status
Description:
Its described quite well in spirit's post above, but the location, direction, altitude and speed all fluctuate even if I am standing still. If I walk in a straight line and track my path using Google Tracks, the result is a random walk around the line that I actually took.
Google navigation is useless as apparently I keep turning round and going off down side roads.
The thing that points this towards a hardware issue is that my wife got an identical One X a few days before me, and hers has worked perfectly with the same software and apps. If I put them side by side you can see hers holds a solid GPS location while mine is spinning around all over the place.
I am currently awaiting my 4th handset, but unfortunatlely DPD have lost it so I am waiting 72 hours for them to officially report it lost so Vodafone can send out another. I'll report back if that one works.

I fixed this problem by following the suggestion in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1
Download "GPS Status" and then from the Tools Menu, chose Manage A-GPS state and then Reset.
It's also reported on that thread that turning Wi-Fi off also fixes the problem but I didn't have to do that.

There seems to be two types of problem - some people see this issue and fix it by resetting A-GPS data, and others try this and it has no effect. This is fairly widely reported on the various forums that I've found mentioning this issue.

I've already given my info above - can some others also do this? Hopefully if we can get Vodafone on the case we might get to the bottom of it.

All is still not as it should be. Today when I tested I couldn't get a fix on any satellite. I tried going to Airplane mode which took much longer than normal (and always seems to be a sign of some sort of radio related problem) but that had no effect. I then power cycled the phone (slow boot) and from exactly the same position I was in previously I got a fix on 8 satellites!

I just called VF Business to make them aware of the issue on my phone. I didn't see the point in getting a replacement at this stage as that may be just the same.
The sad thing was that the guy did not even know how software updates worked and kept trying to tell me I had to get them from HTC and argued about VF having nothing to do with them ! I did my best to re-educate him, but maybe there needs to be better communication within VF !
My D110 kit arrived this morning so going to go out and test the GPS again soon, and may try and film it too for further evidence.

same for me guys i see this when i first got the phone just under 4 weeks ago but thought a update would sort it out but no so called vodaphone this morning who passed mr over to htc after explaining the problem to them they didnt know and said that this was a isolated issue ( this was after i let them know that others were having the same issues. they sent me back to vodaphone who to be fair have been fantastic but im unable to exchange at the moment due to system problems vodaphones end but fingers crossed i can get one sent out. The question to vodaphone is:
How many replacement handsets will be sent out as in a previous post they are on their 4th handset
its such a shame i love this phone its my first android ( was iphone for 4 years )
