Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

If you don't want to take my advice then that's your problem. Like I've said before, I get 2-3 days charge from normal use. If I play a lot of games, listen to music or watch videos then I'm lucky to get an entire day.

It's that simple folks. The problem Is not with your phone It's how you're using It. Yes 2.2.1 uses more battery than 1.6, get over It.

I've tried to point out every conceivable reason why your phone would be using It's battery so much. If you have trouble accepting It, that's your problem.

I have exactly the same phone as you and get 2-3 times more battery life than you do, the only thing we do different Is how we use our phone. Yes It's a little awkward having to turn settings on and off when I need to use them but guess what, that's life.

What I've suggested has been called a "non-fix". It Is a fix, not a fix to your software but a fix to you and how you operate your device.

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Well, I have switched off all the data feeds and with no surprise the battery is lasting longer. However, I now have a phone that does as much as the one I had 10 years ago.

While it is useful to have a work-around I don't think we should accept to just "get over it". It is obvious that everyone with the same phone will use it differently. However, halving battery life by just upgrading the phone's OS is not acceptable. Before I used to just take my phone to work on its own, now I have to its charger. I don't see that as an improvement. I don't use it for music/video or games while out and have less apps installed and running than before. There must be something that's destroying the battery...

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

[ Edited ]

the update is shocking.

after the update my partners phone drains the battery very quickly and the UI is just un useable, the phone crashes numerous times a day and really the device cannot be used.

to tell people to turn off the background data, various apps and to use ariplane mode is just stupid. this phone was purchased to be used as a smart phone using the weather updates, social networking and more than anything to use it as a phone. this phone is advertised to do so much but to say the battery will last only 5 hours if you use these things is a joke.

the phone was good before the update but after is it shocking.

before you moan yes I have followed all resetting and factory reset proceedures TO THE LETTER.

the update has made the phone useless and not my partner as resorted to our spare sony erricsson w960i so why are we paying for an expensive contract with internet data when we cannot use the phone supplied with the contract or use the online data usage.

We are chasing for compensation from vodaphone on the contract fee until the device can be used in the way it was advertised and sold to us.

I have the Desire and that works fantastic, battery life is great with all background data and apps running.

So where do I go, Vodaphone?

what do we do now with a useless phone?

can I have some customer support on this?

If the phone has to be sent off I want money back for the time I am without the handset, i am not paying for a contact I cannot use fully.

Does this forum provide any support? Or is it a case of laying low, let me just pass by and hope the issues just blow over? Please could you answer my questions above.

Think you'll be lucky to get anything more than Braniacs replies on here

Nothing from Vodafone on a smart phone without any camera, picture or Nav functionality, but at least the battery's not too bad. ,

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Since the 'upgrade' I have endured the following issues:

  • Battery life is much shorter and charging takes longer.
  • My phone regularly shuts down when using any app that uses the GPS functinoality.
  • It can also be very sluggish.

After following the suggestion in the first post by brainiacsolutions, my phone is a little better, but still not right. I tried this twice. The first time I selected the option to allow google to track my position. This was disastrous and made the phone very slow, performing constant updates. I would recommend that people try formatting their sd card and doing a hard reset and not selecting this option.

This is very poor service from Vodafone. I note that an employee hasn't replied to this thread for 10 days now and hasn't once produced a satisfactory reply. There is clearly a problem with this 'update' for the HTC Magic and it was clearly not properly tested by Vodafone before it was rolled out. I suspect that the phone isn't really up to running this version of Android. The fact that so many people have phones that don't function properly is a clear breach of contract by Vodafone (and it is laughable that once of the proposed 'solutions' was to turn off all the features of the phone!).

As far as I can see there are 3 possible solutions:

1) Patch 2.2 and roll out a fix

2) Allow users to go back to 1.6, which clearly worked for this handset

3) Upgrade users to a handset that can run 2.2 properly

Any of these are fine by me, but the current situation is not at all satisfactory.

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Don't mind Brainiacsystems, he/she seems a nice person but is a little quick to snap unfortunately.

As for the update then in many ways Brain is right, you will have to fiddle with/switch functions on and off all the time to get at least two days battery life. 2.2.1 Froyo is a drainer in regards to battery life, and especially to the Magic which is fast approaching two years old. It simply isn't fully compatable with the latest update, so Magic users are going to either get use to 2-3 days max battery life like myself or get a new phone.

Personally Vodafone/Android do have to officially address this issue, but the silence speaks volumes!

Haha, yes I am quick to snap. That made me giggle a bit. I'm a guy btw, 27 years old and I live In Manchester. I just want people to have the best phone experience they can while they still have It. Please follow my previous guides to the letter and If that doesn't solve your problems then you'll have to wait until the Tegra 2 devices come out In the next couple of months.

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

I have also noticed the same as Daz. I have tried each day switching just one service/function off to try and discover which one(s) could be responsible for the chronic battery drain. Switching off the location service has almost doubled the battery life and made the most profound difference. I have always had this on in 1.6, perhaps in 2.2.1 it is continually polling or just not letting the phone sleep properly. Turning off all the functions is just wrong, the phone was marketed and sold as doing much more. If I just wanted a basic phone then I can find plenty for peanuts. As I do not know when someone will send me an email or add a calendar event I need them on.

It would appear that vodafone did not do the testing they said they were doing over all these months. While a new phone would be nice, I doubt that is the route vodafone would take (though I quite like the look of the Xperia Arc if they do, hint-hint!). However, I do believe they should provide an OTA patch to fix this issue.

Over to you vodafone... :robotwink:

Also, how come the phone takes sooooo long to charge?

When fully discharged it takes over 8 hours to charge it, this is not normal!

Perhaps when vodafone did all their testing their phone was plugged in all the time...

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Thanks to those trying to help us customers who are left with a phone that is no longer fit for purpose after this downgrade was forced on us. It most certainly is a downgrade as there is no improvement after getting it. My phone used to last 3-4 easily before on 1.6. I have always had the Background Data , WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and Data turned off as it improved the battery life and I just turned on the data for a few minutes each day to update the calendar. I also had well over 30 apps with no problems. It was quite quick to respond to the touch but now is next to useless. I should also add that I am a very low user with only one call a day average and about three texts a week. I stopped using the internet on it when I could no longer read the tiny text. Having done a factory reset, removed all the apps, no data, background, gps, wifi or bluetooth I am getting about 5 hours to a full charge. The phone is being fully charged for the third time since last night and it has not been used once. Some nights I will go through the night and still have 97% of battery left and then the next night with no changes it will go flat over night. The reset speeded up the lag to the point that it only feels like it has frozen every time you push a button as opposed to be completely unresponsive. This update has taken away all functionality out of the phone and rendered it next to useless. Vodafone did give me a small credit when I complained initially and I was told to do the reset. Well having done that and found the the phone is still not fit for purpose I believe that Vodafone should either correct the problem , allow an early upgrade or end any contract for affected users. I have been a Vodafone customer for over 20 years and I can tell you this is the first time I have heard of a network crippling their own phones. And it has nothing to do with the way I use it as I can't use it !

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Sorry, I meant it lasted 3-4 days before. It is worth pointing out that I do not and never have had any music on the device and never listen to music on it in any way. A smart phone no longer and one that makes my old Nokia 3330 look like a good buy now !

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Hi johngml7686

Thanks for your post here. I'm sorry to hear of all the problems you have described with your phone since the update.

I've got to be honest though, the problems you are experiencing seem very exessive compared to those of other users, which makes me believe that your phone may actually be fault. Don't worry though, we can get this sorted.

To get this resolved you'll need to pop into a Vodafone store who will be able to send this away for a warranty repair. All the details can be found here - Vodafone Repairs.

Please let me know how you get on and if you have any more questions just give me a shout

Thanks

Wayne

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for responding. Since that last entry I have reset the phone a further time and something has happened as regards the battery life. After charging three times in one day then doing the reset afterwards, the phone went 24 hours using only 20% of the battery. In fact the morning after the second reset it had only used 3% of the battery !  Unfortunately the response to the touch varies from poor to no response at all. Moving across the screens often will not happen although several of them are empty and trying to scroll through my contacts used to be a doddle but now they might not scroll at all or it takes repeated efforts. Its like someone has  turned the touchscreen sensitivity down to such a point that it doesn't detect a touch or an input. I should add that before this downgrade the phone was working perfectly with no problems at all. I very much doubt that the phone suddenly went faulty at the same time as 2.2.1 was installed unless of course this bit of software breaks phones ?

As I only have seven months left of my two year contract, the phone is way out of warranty so there is no way I will be putting it into a shop. The phone is no longer worth whatever they will want to charge to look at it. To be honest if you look at the specs of this phone compared to the present phones that come with 2.2.1 then you will see that this is only about half as powerfull all round. It is a bit like putting Vista on a computer spec'ed for XP. You just know it is never going to work very well.

I may try resetting it a few more times to see if there is any more of improvement but I think this is probably as good as its going to get. Unless it stops completely then I will see out my contract then have a look around. As you know loyalty doesn't pay but after 20 years I was still happy. After this screwup, and how it has been managed, it may be time to go elsewhere. To have given users the option of going back to 1.6 if 2.2.1 didn't work for them would have solved all of these issues.

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Hi John,

Make sure you turn off google's location data collection when you reset the phone (it asks you as you are signing in). Also keep widgets to a minimum on your screens to try and improve responsiveness.

I've found that my screen becomes unresponsive when the phone is trying to sync something, so it's best to try and minimise this happening (although I agree that if you do too much of this then you might as well not have a smartphone).

I agree with you that this is poor service - the Magic is clearly not up to this update, so why was it rolled out?

Wayne - whenever I have taken my phone to a Vodafone shop, they are not interested if you don't have Vodafone's phone insurance and say that a repair could take up to 3 weeks. Who can afford to lose their phone for 3 weeks?! (and I would still have to pay my monthly contract during these 3 weeks even though I don't have use of a phone....)

Anyway, the phones are not broken, they are just not capable of running v2.2 - it was silly to upgrade the operating system of an old phone beyond a major version number (ie from 1 to 2).

Vodafone - either fix this, put us back to 1.6 or give upgrades early as a gesture of goodwill!

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown Fixed.

Well a first post but then what a time and subject to start with! (apologies if this has issues with it)

First off a thank you to brainiacsystems that system reset was needed and an easy walk through provided Big thumbs up deserved.

and if Neoblade is still around hats off to you sir, certainly helped out in the past.

I have to admit that so far 2.2 has had completely mixed results. Sometimes the phone lasts for 2 days and others it uses the battery in under 12 hours, and its impossible to predict (around the text messages and phone calls, I'm not popular so one or two of each a day is the norm for me under 2 mins for the calls). Slowdown of the phone has not been an issue at all though. Best performance of the battery was on a trip to France when I altered the APN name to make sure I could not get data connection and the charges connected with that, it lasted 3 days! (Before I reset the phone as well)

I have all the features switched off etc. and I have even narrowed down the home screen to one page out of the 4, all the others have nothing in them (I'm up for trying nearly anything to get more life out of this thing!).

I have used the advanced task killer (I'm not going to start a debate on its usefulness I'm using it as another eye to see what is going on) and found the voice search was always there even after "killing" it with the task killer and force close with the phone operating system. There is an update to this from google which I have done but I have no idea if it has/ has not improved issues, but it does not show up as always running. Though I did remove the Google search/voice search widget from the home screen not long after.

I'm going to perform another reset and format the Sd card this time. Last throw of the dice, I must admit rooting seems an idea.

I have over a year on my contract with a phone not fit for purpose, as the battery wont last for just being a phone (no data etc) any idea Vodafone if you would offer a patch or an early upgrade? I'm willing to discuss on the upgrade front the best things in life are never free, but surprise me.

But if you are going to attempt a patch Vodafone at least give us an idea it may or may not occur! The upgrade fiasco to 2.2 could easily of been averted with some communication.

Congratulations if you made it this far..........

Oh and Hello everyone, I still love the interface of the magic.

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Hi Daz,

I can confirm that Google Location is turned off. In fact everything is turned off except the ringer !  Here we have a phone sold in 2009-2010 that has the functionality of a phone sold in the 1990's !  The fact that you have to remove or turn off any Smart funtionality kind of defeats the object of having bought a Smartphone in the first place. Yes I could start putting things back on it but the chances are that either the battery will die very quickly or the lack of response from any input would render the app next to useless.

It would be nice to say I am very surprised that no one from Vodafone has responded but then I don't think I am. The rational with many companies now is to ignore anything they don't like in the hope it will go away. I am not interested in money, not interested in getting a new phone (at the present time) but I do want to have back the phone I selected, based on its abilities, that I took out a two year contract on. I have been happy with everything else but it would have been good to have been offered 2.2.1 rather than have it forced on us and it would have been better if we were offered the opportunity of putting our phones back to the days when they were Smart if it didn't work out. Forcing the new software on us and not providing any form of backup for the problems caused has done them no good in my eyes. Forum's like this would not exist if people didn't have problems but providing the forums and doing nothing about the issues raised is fairly pointless. I am very appreciative of the time individuals have put in trying to help us but should not Vodafone take a bit of interest ?

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

I agree, vodafone really need to sort this out. This thread has been going for over a month now and still nothing concrete. I still wonder what they were doing during all those months of testing to get it "just right" for us(!).

Even charging it is proving difficult, it appears even connected to a power station it can barely cope with consumption. I plugged it in when it had just 2% remaining and now, 10 hours later, it has just gone to 90% charged! At that rate I'll have to wait another 2 hours for it to be fully charged. So, it's charging for 12 hours and I'm lucky to get 8 hours of it staying on (with location disabled).

Re: Android 2.2.1 Battery and Slowdown (not) Fixed.

Hi johngml7686

I would have to tend to agree with Wayne with this one, with the issue been excessive I would recommend the repair service too.

The warrenty on the handset is for the length of the contract, so there is no need to worry about the warranty aspect for the phone.

The average time any phone is in the repair centre is 5 working days, this is dependent on what the fault is on the handset.

We can also arrange for this to be arranged if you prefer this to be done through the post, or if you don't have a local Vodafone store to take the phone into.

If you would like this to be sent to the repair centre by post, please let me know, and we can start the ball rolling.
