Can't download MMS on Incredible S from o2

Hi, I've a HTC Incredible S on monthly contract.  I can succesfully send/recieve MMS from other vodafone customers but not from other networks (have specifically tried on o2).

 

I've been sent several messages from an o2 customers, they come through but when I click download it will wait a while and then give an error message 'download of message from XXX was unsuccesful'.

 

Have searched on various android forums and seeing this to be quite a common issue, have tried various other MMS apps and resetting the phone with no success.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Thanks for your post here. I’m sorry to hear that you are having problems with this. I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you.

 

As you are specifically having a problem receiving MMS from O2, you will need to ask the O2 customer to get in contact with O2 to get this investigated. Only the network that sends the MMS has the visibility of why that MMS failed, so in this case, this would need to be investigated by them.

Thanks.  I got a few other people I know on o2 to try and message me and get the same result.

 

Got one of them to phone o2 with all my details and they got told that the message shows up as sent from thier end and doesn't give any more info on if it was recieved or not.  They said that since its multiple o2 phones that are having the issue it must be a vodafone problem.

I am sorry to see that this is still happening.

 

Thanks for asking your friend to check with O2.

 

Can send yourself a MMS message, this will determine where the issue could lie. If it comes through fine, it would show that the phone settings are correct and the network is working fine.

 

When you say you get an alert are you given an option to download from "get your photo"?

 

I have had a word with an expert with MMS and it could sound like a conversion issue. So that we can see if any information is coming through from O2 I have just sent you an email, if you can reply back to that with the relevant information we will be able to take a look.

Hi - thanks for your help, have just replied to your email.

 

I've sent myself a MMS and this works fine.  I've also recieved MMS' fine from other people that are with Vodafone.

 

By alert I can see the message in my messages list, and have a download button, but after a few mins I'll just recieve an error message saying it could not be retrieved.

I'm having exactly the same problem as described so would be interested in finding out a solution - I can send/receive MMS to/from other vodafone customers, but can't receive any from other networks.

 

I would state though that this problem only started in mid May and from looking back at my messages looks to have started following the update of Android to 2.3.3. Is there even a way of getting my version of android back to an older version to see if it is android which is doing something strange here - whenever an O2 mms comes in it just says Message Not Downloaded - Transient Failure.

 

Hopefully this is fixable as most of my friend/relatives are on O2 and this will be a right pain being only 4 months into a 2 year contract with Vodafone.

Welcome to the Vodafone eForum from all of the team.

 

I must admit that it is strange that the handset just won’t let you download the MMS from O2.

 

I will send you a quick email, please reply t the email with your details so we can check the network traffic for you however, in the meantime please can you also try the SIM in a different phone to see if you have the same issue and it may also be worth asking one of your friends to contact O2 to see if they are aware of any issues at their end when the messages are being sent to a Vodafone number.

I have this same problem as well. Have gone through the 20 steps of adding Vodafone MMS as an APN.

Have you tried your SIM in a different handset?

 

Could you also ask any people that you specifically cannot receive MMS from to contact their providers?

Hi Dave

 

If I ask the 4 people who are on o2 who I can't receive MMS from are they going to get the same response as the first user (nothing to do with o2)?

I could receive MMS from these people before a couple of months back .So I think it is down to the network or phone (an HYC Desire HD).

I have put the SIM in a HTC Magic and can't receive MMS wih that either

I haven't received an email from you, just checked my inbox.

In answer to your question, yes they would still need to raise this with O2. As Dave and I have both mentioned on this thread, we have no visibility of incoming MMS/SMS on the network. Any problems such as this are always investigated by the sending network. Even if there is no problem evident from their side, this would still be investigated by them (A trace is usually applied) and if no fault is found their end, their engineers then communicate with our engineers and pass of the trace logs so the investigation can be completed.

 

On a mobile network there is such a thing as an MSC (Mobile Switching Centre) this switches and routes the calls through the network. There are several of these throughout the network and they all contain a huge database of mobile numbers prefix’s and there respective networks to help route calls from network to network. These databases are updated weekly and it is sometimes common for one or two numbers to be missed off the update. Chances are everyone on this thread has the same mobile number prefix and this is the cause of the issue. O2 will be able to investigate and resolve this for you, so you’ll need to ask your friends to raise this.

One person has called o2 and o2 said it's nothing to do with them and that I needed to speak to you.

They have no problems sending MMS to other o2 customers.

Just wanted to add to this thread that I am having exactly the same problem with an HTC Sensation so it appears not to be a phone specific problem but a vodafone/android related problem.  I can recieve MMS just fine from anyone but o2 users...

 

O2 have been less than helpfull...

I have 2 HTC Sensations on Vodafone, 1 for me, 1 for the girlfriend,

 

mine works fine, i can recieve mms from anywhere however hers is the second handset on my account and can send and recieve from vodafone but can't recieve from o2 .

 

she used to be on O2 and ported her number over around new year, it worked on the tempory sim/number but when the port had been done it started this, im not sure it it updated around the same time or not, but there have been a few updates, and by the look of forums and google many many people are having the same issue.

 

all her friends are on O2 and this needs fixing, i've give up phoning vodafone i've lost many hours of my life on the phone to several vodafone employees. each 1 of them guide me thru the same stuff and say it will be fixed in 24 hours, is that what they teach vodafone staff to say instead of " i have no idea whats wrong with your phone"???

 

any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

 

Im guessing this isnt going to be a quick fix.

Well I am no expoert BUT, after a year of the very same problem I will go out on a limb and say its an HTC vodafone problem and no one at the contact centre or customer service knows how to resolve this or cares to help now we are all tied in contracts.. ITS A JOKE.. I have had 2 handsets and 2 sims, yet still cant get MMS from anyone other than vodafone.. Also had trobles with clearing cache that eventually got help from HTC instead of Vodafone so called "tech" help... no more than useless and ALL of these threads on the same issue just prove this. Its hundreds of us having this problem, not a handful.. So vodafone I can see you loosing a few customers at the end of our contract unless you get your finger out..
