Can't make or receive calls

I have a new HTC Desire S.  When I call my own number using a landline it just goes through to answerphone and I can't call out to anyone either.  It just cuts off before it connects. Am I doing something wrong or is my new phone faulty?

Re: Can't make or receive calls

Yes, I have a signal at home. The phone came from Vodafone as part of my new contract, so im using my old sim. Strangely enough, if I put the sim into an old candy bar phone i can make calls but when I put it into my old Samsung Apollo I can't make calls on that either! Something very strange is going on. I'm usually pretty good with gadgets and getting problems sorted but have to say this has me completely stumped!! My husband was upset yesterday as he was trying to call me all afternoon and it kept going straight through to voicemail!

Re: Can't make or receive calls

Hello michele

If you are able to make calls in an old phone but not in your newer phone, it sounds very much like a SIM card problem, if you have had the SIM for a long time it could well be worn out and need replacing.

A Vodafone store will be able to give you a new SIM and transfer your number to the new SIM in store.  Give that a go and see if it works.

Thanks Ann, i'll try that. I didn't realise the store could transfer the number. Does it take long to go through?

Re: Can't make or receive calls

Hello michele

The number should be transferred immediately.  If you dont mind waiting, you can order a new SIM from the website, but it would mean calling Customer Care to get the number transferred to the new SIM.

A store would be quicker and most major branches are open on a Sunday. The staff would also be able to check your new phone to make sure all is working as it should be.

Thanks Ann, that's most helpful. I'll pop along to my local store today and hope to get it sorted! Have a good day.

Re: Can't make or receive calls

Just got back from the store.  Unsurprisingly the phone worked perfectly there but the guy changed the sim for me anyway.  Phone making calls in the store ok, all my unreceived texts came though too.

I've just returned home and the phone wont make any calls here, just like before. It just bleeps and cuts off.

The guy in the store wouldn't accept its the Vodafone signal as he searched my postcode and found good signal strength and no problems.  I have been able to use a Vodafone signal in my house for years, until now! I'm thinking of cancelling my 2 year contract.  I can't carry on with a phone that doesn't work in my house, surely! Any more ideas please?

Re: Can't make or receive calls

I think the problem here could be the type of signal that is broadcast in your area?

Can you set the phone to 2g and see if it works?

Your menu may be different but it will be roughly in:

Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network Settings > Network Mode -

Set to GSM or 2g.

As the phone worked in the shop (different area) it would indicate that the phone is not at fault.

You may benefit from a Sure-Signal Box, which uses your Home Wifi to boost your 3g signal in the Home. I have one and they are brilliant. :smileyhappy:

Re: Can't make or receive calls

Thanks Dave and Soupdragon,

I'm going to spend a bit of time this morning going through the network troubleshooter.  I've had a restless night thinking about it all.  I'm afraid yesterday afternoon in my frustration I called Vodafone cancellations and they are arranging to cancel my contract once I return the handset. I'm not sure I really want to do that now.  I have had no problems with my signal before.  Been a Vodafone customer for well over 10 years at this house.  I did notice after returning from a 4 month holiday last month problems with my phone (Samsung Apollo).  A new house has been built during my time away.  Could this have anything to do with my loss of signal?

Soupdragon, sitting at my computer I have tried to set the phone to GSM, but when I search networks Vodafone doesnt appear.  If I go to other places in the house I get varying results on GSM/WCDMA auto settings - either Vodafone doesn't appear or it does but "unable to connect to this network at this time. Please try again later", or "Your SIM does not allow connection to this network" messages appear.

I went upstairs and held the phone out of the window and got a signal for a brief moment!  I am wondering about Sure Signal. Do you really think this would help?

Thanks for all of your help so far.

Re: Can't make or receive calls

Hi Michele,

It would seem that the New House build would coincide with the lowering of Signal strength.

The Sure Signal Box is really good! I used to get about 2 bars on my Phone originally which would work OK, but now I have the Sure Signal I get 4 bars (full signal) constantly.
