I am a new user of the HTC Desire HD. First impressions are great and I am already in love with the phone. Only one annoying thing is the battery drainage. Hence why I am posting this thread. My firmware is 220.127.116.11, Android 2.2 and is a Vodafone branded handset, with the usual bloatware installed.
Whilst looking through the website, and also reading other members posts, I noticed there is a more recent firmware available for my device. What got my attention more was from the Vodafone website on the help section:
The latest update available is 18.104.22.168. This update revises a lot of bugs, most notably claiming to improve battery performance. The problem I face is that when I go to settings > About phone > System software updates > Check now, It tells me 'There are no updates available for your phone.'
Why is this? Why can I not recieve this update? How can I get this update? Is there anyway Vodafone could push this update to my IMEI?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

This is unusual - 1.75 has been available for a while now, so you wouldn't be affected by HTC staggering the release.
We don't have a specific URL, and neither do HTC, as the updates are designed to operate OTA (Over The Air). The same section of the help centre states that updates via PC are not possible.
You list the steps you took to check for an update - can you confirm for me by following these steps that you haven't installed one previously without realising - go to Menu > Settings > About phone > Software Information > Software Number to reconfirm the current number.
Can I get you to try a hard reset for me as well and then try again, just in case there's something blocking the update function? To do this, just follow these steps:
- Switch the handset on
- Whilst powered up, remove the SIM card and battery
- Put the battery back in and switch on
- Wait a couple of minutes, then remove the battery again
- Replace the SIM and battery and switch back on
Whilst this won't reset the handset to it's initial settings at this point, it will act like a PC reboot and close down any corrupted code which may be getting in the way. That way we can see what else is going on before we delve any further.
I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for the reply. I can confirm after going onto Software Information that my current firmware is 139.161.1, Android 2.2
I have carried out that same procedure for the hard reset quite a few times now, but just for the sake of it, did one 10 minutes ago. But still no joy as to any notification of an update (even checked manually). Even trying *#*#checkin#*#* (something i read in forums that has helped people previously) does not seem to help, although i get a notification saying 'checkin successful'.
I have friends who have the Desire HD and they have all recieved their updates. Just confused as to why I am not recieving them. I have rang Vodafone countless times, and keep getting cut off. Even when i do have a full conversation with them, they ask me to do the same stuff i have tried over and over again. I was also told to contact HTC, so I did and told them about the issue. They were not helpful either and told me to keep waiting until you get a notification, because apparently there is a list and a que of serial numbers waiting to take up the update. I rang them last week and still I have no firmware update.
EddyOS, I appreciate you taking your time out to help my cause. I have been on the XDA forums trying to find this OTA update, unfortunately it doesnt have seem to have leaked. It is a URL that the phone connects to, but trying to find this URL would be like picking out a needle in a haystack
Like i suggested before, is there no way Vodafone can route a software update request onto my IMEI, so it is forced to me?

I was surprised to not see these OTA's on such a technical forum. Hope I am wrong though at it is actually there. If not, I'm sure Vodafone can provide me with a link from the relevent department.

Hello Dave. I have exactly the same problem. I am stuck on 172.405.3 but the phone says I am on the most upto date version. The reset process did not work for me either. I am following this thread with interest!

1.72.405.3 is the Generic FW and nothing to do with Vodafone - it's also the latest unbranded FW so there's nothing more available as yet for your handset

1.72 had a lot of bugs. sms notification bugs and other instabilities which made htc pull the update. 1.75 was then released to fix these issues. Is that correct?
Also, can the Mods help and rectify this issue. Seems as though youre the only people who can help, as the people on the phones are useless.

Has mentioned previously I have 1.72 and set to auto update. Not heard of 1.75. I have no bugs or issues everything works Brilliantly with 1.72.
If you have problems maybe you need to look at your settings.

... and it is the SMS notifications that are annoying me (as in they are hit and miss). It would be great to have a fully working phone... will try the support line again tomorrow, but only got a polite but incomprehensible Indian lady today

I have found the link to the OTA after some luck lol. Here goes:
Hope this will be as useful to people in need of this update.
Thanks to EddyOS for trying to help and also the others for their attempts.

Ahh, good man. Knew it was about somewhere
For those not knowing how to flash it:
1. Rename the file update.zip (not update.zip.zip)
2. Copy to root of the SD card
3. Turn off phone and then turn phone on holding volume down to get into HBOOT (you might need to pull the battery as the 'quick boot' means the phones doesn't turn off properly unless disabled)
4. Select Recovery using the volume buttons and press power to select
5. Once in recovery hold volume up and press power to get a menu in blue
6. Select 'apply sd:update.zip'
7. Follow the instructions
(All the above is based on the original Desire but should be about the same)
