if you have rooted and flashed your android with a custom rom, the ota upates will just not notify you an update is available, however you can get them through the manual download links provided on xda phandroid etc, what the update will do to your rom however, i dont know lol

Flashing The Rom

hi guys,

Its interesting to read what you guys think about the ROMs you've tried. I just flashed mine yesterday morning (took about 1/2 hour following the guide linked to previously in this thread) to the Hero ROM. Looks amazing, but there's just far too much lag for me to stick to this one. So can anyone suggest some pretty fast ROMs? I've seen the Vodafone Black ROM which looks natty - but not too sure if there' d be much difference compared to the standard HTC Hero ROM. I like the look and feel of this ROM, its only the performance on the 32B that's making me rethink the options.

Hi Mitten.

yes the Hero roms look lovely but are currently too slow to be actually fucntional on our phones. I have read some reviews of the Hero phone and aparently there is the occasional lag on that phone as well so it's to be expected we experience some. I think it will get sorted out though as currently the devs are working on optimizing the rosie interface, trying to make everything as small as possible etc.

The pure black roms by Jepelea are the one's to look at, or at least keep an eye on his threads.

I'm currently using this Cyanogen rom, i'm using the palm pre themed one and it's just lovely, super fast and does everything you could want. You can find the normal release at the top in the 1st post (go for release 3) and the palm pre themed rom in the second post (again release 3)

Thanks Sean.

I'll give the Jepelea ROM a try tonight. I've been having a read though and there's been mention that the Hero widgets could be the cause of the memory leak. So I've removed a couple of them to see what effect it has on performance. Has speeded up a tad, but we'll keep trying. Cheers for the advice tho.

The hero rom from fat1ty runs like a dog on the voda branded handset due to the ram problem, even disabling doesnt help me personally. Have tried 2 updates now and given up. The ion rom was nice and fast but I am running the HTC PureBlack rom now, have been since he first brought it out, I updated to the alpha version and found this to be the most stable and havent bothered with the kitchens as it seems theres loads of issues with it, so happy with the black and recommend it thoroughly. I would stick with the alpha, although the leds dont work properly this is the only bug I have found, everything else works flawlessly.

I agree, Fatal1tys rom is out of date now anyways, he hasn't touched it for almost a month and it was never really useable in the 1st place. The pure black ones are the better one's for sure. I used the C version of the pure black rom and it was pretty good. Couldn't get the kitchen stuf to work so I asked Jepelea to build me a custom rom :D

currently running this

(update 7/22) Very speedy port of JacHero2.7.3 32B and now with Compcache

available here

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538867

what ive done to speed mine up is run nothing other than the toggle widgets, flip clock with weather on the home page, i know that sounds counterproductive, why have rosie and not run all widgets, well the weather can be accessed by pressing the weather on the flip clock then the app takes up the whole screen similar to the weather widget anyhoot, i launch all the emails, messages etc through the sliding doc , no difference to scrolling left or right pages in my mind takes as many button presses, yet i still use the apps of hero same with peep etc

No audio through bluetooth headphones is currently not working throughout all hero roms, they are still working on fixing it.

The problem I had with the kitchen is that I just couldn't get the batch file to run properly, it just kept giving out errors. In the end I gave up and got asked the Dev to knock me one up in an update.zip file so I could actually use it!

No idea what your on about regarding someone getting into trouble  .

I think the best so for is NK02's ION v4, and it looks great (the best I've found) if you download the Hero them version;

Flashing The Rom

Hey guys,

As Wayne said before, a great little conversation here!

To pick up on Seanmates point, the updates are delivered automatically over the air (OTA for anyone who stumbled in and wondered what everyone's talking about ;) ) so you wouldn't have an announcement being sent anyway. The key thing is whether the ROM you have used is fully supported. If it is, then the updates should happen automatically and work for you irrespective of the reflashing, however I cannot confirm this as 100% guaranteed as we have no control over the exact content of the code used in creating them. If it isn't supported, then I'm afraid all bets would be off with this.

As was mentioned earlier, reflashing a phone does invalidate the warranty, so to anyone considering it I would just stress that we cannot guarantee that you won't have issues in this regard if you go ahead.

P.S. If anyone wants to find out what they can do with the Magic, just in case they're looking at reflashing the handset when they don't need to, our HTC magic help centre is a great starting point for instructions and information, including a series of tutorial videos and an animated guide to give you a complete visual guide.
