HTC HD2 - I Can't Send Emails From My Synced Outlook Account?

Hi all, I'm wondering if someone can help me. I recently bought the HTC HD2 phone and have set up email accounts on it.

My work email is an Outlook account - I think its a POP3 not an Exchange Server account. I set up Activesync and my phone successfully synched with the email, calendar, contacts etc on my work computer.

However it would appear that I can only send/receive email from the computer - my phone wont send and receive email from the Outlook account - it will only sync and then send from my work computer. Is there a setting I'm missing here, or is it only possible to view synched email and write draft replies on my phone?

This seems a bit pointless to me - the whole point as far as I am concerned is that I want to be able to receive my work email on my phone when I'm out of the office!

Any comments gratefully received.

HTC HD2 - I Can't Send Emails From My Synced Outlook Account?

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to the Vodafone eForum from all of the team. :)

so we can get a resolution for you please can you answer me a few questions;

Are you able to connect to the internet on the device?
Are you in a 2G or 3G area?
What outgoing mail server settings are you using?

If you can let us know we will be able to investigate this for you.

HTC HD2 - I Can't Send Emails From My Synced Outlook Account?

Hi James, thanks for your quick reply.

I can access the internet - and have successfully set up a googlemail account.

I appear to be in a 3g area.

Please can you tell me exactly what you need and where to find it for "outgoing mail server settings" - do you mean on my phone or on my computer? (sorry I'm not too hot on technical stuff!)

Thanks

Sarah

HTC HD2 - I Can't Send Emails From My Synced Outlook Account?

Sarah- sorry to but in here where James is trying to help, but you have encountered one of the idiosynchrasies of mobile phone synchronisation on Windows Mobile devices.

In essence, you can have an ActiveSync connection to your email, which will do a sync whenever you connect your phone to the PC. This includes received mail, and mail to be sent. It is a throwback to the days when Windows Mobile (or Pocket PC as it was called) had no inbuilt phone capability. It won't allow you to immediately send any emails- it is only a PC sync protocol.

The other option is to set up a separate POP3 or IMAP email account for your cmopany email on the HD2. This will mean obtaining all the connection parameters (username, password, incoming and outgoing server addresses) from your company then entering them as a new connection. You can then set the frequency of email downloading, and whether to send new emails immediately.

If you follow that route, then you ought to disable email syncing from the ActiveSync account otherwise you risk some duplication of messages. Generally if you need email on multiple devices, then an Exchange Server account is preferable as all data is held on the server, but many companies don't use this facility as it's costly to set up and administer.

Thanks Neil, I had a feeling that something like that was the case.

I work for a very small firm so we dont have an Exchange Server.

I might set up a separate account as you suggested.

No problems- I've had 10 years of troubleshooting these things! I moved to Vodafone early this year, so this excellent forum is new to me :)

Not sure how Vodafone view external forum links, but the forum I do work for has a host of specialist experience ! I've deliberately kept my sig here as a text rather than a link!

I am also a small company with no exchange server. How I got over the problem was to set the same outlook email account up as another email account. So now you get emails both to outlook when syncing and direct to the phone.
