HTC HD2 - What Are The Changes In The New Firmware?

To Vodafone - can you advise the changes between the new and previous firmware. I'm reluctant to upgrade when I don't know what I'll be getting with the new version. I might be better off staying where I am!

HTC HD2 - What Are The Changes In The New Firmware?

Hello Andy A and welcome to the eForum :)

In terms of updating firmware my own personal advice is usually to stay put unless there are specific functions (additional features) that you are after.

The 1.72.161.3 release (06/04/10) mainly features improvements and support under the bonnet, although I do not as yet have a detailed list of improvements, this also depends on what firmware you are currently on:

The software (ROM) version can be obtained through Start -> Settings -> About phone -> Software Information

I would also encourage a few internet searches to try to get a better idea of the various improvements, although I am aware of many customers who would rather stay put due to not having any problems with the current firmware version. I also anticipate that more forum users will come online to comment on any improvements they have experienced after an update.

I've also linked to the HD2 software upgrade page incase you do decide to go ahead :)

Thanks

Reidar,

Following on from the other thread on 1.72...

We know what changes are between the HTC 1.66 and 1.72 releases.

So specifically Vodafone modifications to the standard build is what I would like to know

There isn't one - just flash it and see, if you don't like it go back to the 1.66. Seems this will be easier then waiting...

HTC HD2 - What Are The Changes In The New Firmware?

Hi Starfury / Andy A,

As I mentioned to Starfury in another thread, we don't have such a list sadly. Manufacturers just don't seem to supply them to us.

You seem very suspicious of our firmware! I promise, there aren't any hidden surprises... or are there ...?

I'm joking of course, but if we should come across such a list, we will let you know.

Not suspicious. Just cautious. Big companies can and do introduce 'features' which are in their interests and perhaps not so much their customers' interests...

If there's nothing to hide, then there should be release notes.

To be honest, I'm amazed that Vodafone are prepared to offer their customers a firmware upgrade without knowing what the vendor have actually put in it...

HTC HD2 - What Are The Changes In The New Firmware?

Oh I see VF have royally screwed up the 1.72 firmware...

Removed parts of the Advanced Connection section.
Removed the ability to reconfigure your connections automatically and update the operators database
Changed the user-agent in Opera so that http://m.google.com no longer recognises the handset as a Windows Mobile.
Setup WAP connections instead of Web connections forcing you to have a ringfenced browsing experience.
And thats just what I have found so far...

HTC HD2 - What Are The Changes In The New Firmware?

For anyone that wants to download GoogleMaps 4.0.0 from http://m.google.co.uk (then click maps) you will first need to change the Custom User Agent field in Opera's config.

Open Opera and goto the address bar
Enter opera:config (make sure there is no http etc)
Scroll down to User Prefs and open the section
Scroll down to Custom User Agent (Probably start with Vodafone)
Remove everything in the box and enter the following string:

HTC_HD2_T8585 Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)

Then scroll to the bottom of the list and there will be a save button, click it.

Can I suggest Vodafone rectify this issue and return the ability to run a network operator setup wizard and download the operator databases to allow us to reconfigure our handsets properly...

HTC HD2 - What Are The Changes In The New Firmware?

Hi,

I have found, along with the other issues mentioned by Starfury, that the battery life has reduced considerably. My phone has gone from a good 24h battery life to about 6h. Very disappointed. I have also noticed that the HTC media player takes ages to load now, when i go the the library nothing appears there for a few minutes so i have to load the player, then go back to home and wait. Never had this issue before.

The only positive i can see so far is that the Camera Flash overexposure issue seems to be fixed (or at least reduced). needless to say, despite this i can't deal with a 6h battery life so i will be flashing back to 1.66.

On a side note, I have restored with SPB backup and now Activesync tells me there has been a change in the server and i have to re-sync everything. when i do this all my contacts loose their Facebook photo. (although they are still linked to their profiles - very annoying.) Again this has never happened when restoring after other ROM upgrades.

Hi gsxr1300,

I'm afraid we don't have an updated HD2 yet so we can't test this, has anybody else experienced the same issue? If so do any members know a way around this?

As stated earlier we don't have access to a list of changes made so we have to wait until we can get our hands on the firmware and evaluate it ourselves so if anybody can advise it would be much appreciated. :)

Thanks

After a ROM flash it can take 5 or so charges to get the best battery life so don't give up on it yet. Also, you should always do a hard reset after a ROM flash to make sure it's a clean ROM from the start

Do a hard reset, as I said above it's always worth doing it after flashing a new ROM
