HTC Legend - Android 2.2 'Froyo' first impressions

Hi! As i see a lot of people already got the froyo. I had a look today but my phone tells me, still no update available for my phone. Its a bit strange because my software number is 1.31.405.5. And i did not find this number under the list of previous software numbers, here: http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/topic/75429-htc-legend-firmware/
Anybody has any idea?

You're not on a Vodafone product code (x.xx.161.x) but a generic WWE (World Wide English) vendor code (x.xx.405.x) - you'll have to wait on HTC to roll it out

HTC Legend - Android 2.2 'Froyo' first impressions

Updated this morning and have now had a chance to play around. One thing I've noticed, if I go to manage applications and clear defaults for HTC sense, when I press home I no longer have the stock android UI option, just HTC sense (and Launcher Pro). I wanted to see if the stock android 2.2 UI was any different. Has anyone else tried this? and do you have the basic 'Home' option?

Noticed some minor changes:
you can't press menu to unlock anymore, which isn't very important but I'd got used to doing it.
My setting for window animations had been changed to full. No idea why.
Auto-sign ins on the browser got lost, had to re do them
Minor changes to the stock sms app.

The browser is definitely improved - tried it on flickr and you could tell the difference

Must've been removed, was never on the Desire although the original promo video on YouTube had it...it won't be any different than it was before, stock Android is fugly IMO

Some more observations after a few days.

The system is now *very* aggressive when it comes to stopping processes that would've remained 'inactive' in 2.1, however this doesn't seem to translate into improved battery life from what I can see. All I notice is that apps are more frequently having to restart themselves.

Chrome to Phone - very handy!

Gallery is now much slicker and responsive, that JIT thing I guess.

Angry Birds doesn't lag as much, it is better though. Reckless Racing still a step too far though :(

Reception and battery life in general don't seem to have been impacted, and may even be slightly improved, but as I'm on holiday this week I'll need to wait until I get back to work on Monday to properly compare to a 'normal' day with which I can compare battery and signal issues in a known setting.

That sucks. I'm not a big fan of Sense, I found the stock android launcher or Launcher pro to be much cleaner and faster. Launcher pro seems a bit glitchy with froyo. If I could, I'd get rid of sense all together, I never found a way to get the normal notification bar at the top, as opposed to the sense one.

Angry Birds is much better. Reckless Racing is playable, its better than it was and also the last update of the game seemed to improve things a bit. The game is optimised for ARM7 it seems and not ARM6 we have. I have contacted Polarbit but the helpdesk support contacts don't even understand the question. I asked if we could turn down details a bit so its faster....sigh

Froyo 2.2 likes

1) Wifi seems stronger, well I have more bars, same with signal strength. Although with the signal like another poster has said they have done an "Apple" and just seem to have changed bar to strength ratio.

2) Feels "slightly" smoother amd quicker navigating.

3) Menu's and built in apps seem cosmetically more polished.

4) Wifi tethering, app share, phone to sd are really useful. Also like the torch and live wallpapers.

5) The fact I have 2.2 so my brick owning "desire" mates can now do one and stop bragging about it.

6) Web browsing is quicker on wifi and 3g.

dislikes

You know what I actually haven't found any yet.

Credit where credit is due to Htc and Vodafone thanks for making this an easy and better update.

at first wasn't so sure...few problems to start with, but with a factory reset and a formatted sd card....froyo is doing the Legend justice finally!!

major thumbs up!!!

  • stock messaging working once again
  • both wi-fi and cell signal improved
  • scrolling menu's are smoother and less laggy
  • it's Froyo baby!! lol

and the only thing that is missing is that you can change the lock screen wallpaper...but no biggy!!

indeed to the previous comment!! thank you HTC and Vodafone!! a great upgrade!! keep the work up!!

2.3 soon?? lol jokes

HMMMM, something that I do not like is how when you are on a call, it will disable your mobile internet!!!

Very annoying. Last night while on the phone to a friend I was asked whats on at the cinema, i flicked onto my internet tab but only to see that the internet is now disabled during calls.

Really really annoying.......

You think not being able to browse the internet when you're on the phone is annoying...

Some observations after a few minutes of updating - it wouldn't let me back up to my memory card before installing and now my entire phone's in German with no possible way of changing it back by the looks of things... well done HTC and vodafone... I think a big pat on the back for you lot coz (yet again) something's gone wrong with my HTC... I wonder how many times this phone's going to have to be sent back and refurbished and how many times I'm going to have to go in the shop AGAIN...?!!

there was an issue with not being able to back the phone up during upgrading, but a factory reset WILL work.

Just do a hard reset and set it up again

Thanks, but I'm on my third hard reset and each time it's loading up german... I've tried changing the language in the main menu and nothing and it starts to load up in english telling me there's no sim card (I don't want that wiped as well!) and then the load up screen asks me what language I want this in and I select English and it carries on in German... and I only took french in high school! Zut alor!

Sorry for being a bit ignorant but I want to try a factory reset to see if it will solve the signalling problems I'm having.Do I just sync the phone with my PC then sync it again when I've reset it?Thanks

you could back the phone up to your pc, but this is a pointless process really, as all you are going to lose is your messages, unless they are really important and your apps of course. but did you have signal problems before the upgrade or did they develop after?

you may not have had all the problems i seemed to have had since the upgrade, but just doing a factory reset, and formatting my sd card helped a lot for me. at one point i thought i had ruined my phone, but faith has been restored with better signal wi-fi and cell and battery has improved a hell of a lot!

not sure if the sd card bit would help signal problems but good for the system.

Re: HTC Legend - Android 2.2 'Froyo' first impressions

First thing i noticed was the text messages in the correct order, and the live wallpaper is nice, also the torch and been ale to turn it in to a wireless router.

Bad things lost my APN so i had to do that again.

It ran really bad and still the red cross when holding base of the phone. Did a reset and if your vodafone sim is in the phone you wont get German etc. Ran better But-

Its still hit and miss with the signal but here is the real problem every other time you unlock the phone its says weather wallpaper has stopped, force stop. htc.com.weatherwallpaper or something like that.

Did tests i have tried other sim cards, O2 is bad and APN settings dont always work which ever settings you use. Also it will be Geman if it has any other sim in other than Vodafone sim when you do a factory reset.

The wifi on this phone is ace, dont know why some have had issues which every firmware they had in at the time.

Re: HTC Legend - Android 2.2 'Froyo' first impressions

I haven't been on the forum in a while and I've been wary about updating because I'd read that there were major problems with the software updates so I still have the 2.1 software version.

Just noticed that Froyo is available and from whats been said it seems like a good idea to upgrade to it.

Am I right in thinking that to upgrade I just need to go to Settings - About phone - System software updates and check there?

Would you generally recommend updating from 2.1?

Thanks :smileyhappy:

Re: HTC Legend - Android 2.2 'Froyo' first impressions

I am also having a problem with the music player, exactly the same as the person who mentioned it earlier in the thread - when I return to a paused track in the music player, it starts from the beginning, rather than the point at which it was paused. It doesn't seem to matter whether I return to the home screen or not.

Neither a factory reset or SD card format fixed the issue.
