i have jus bough a htc touch legend and it started up in german and wont change to english wots goin on ?????

Are you using your vodafone sim card?

I have seen this happen when the phone is started up for the first time using a giffgaff sim card but never with a vodafone one.

Hey Guys,

I think this may be a common issue at the moment however this can be changed back to english by doing the following;

Press the MENU key
Touch the Cogs icon
Scroll to and touch the 13th option down
Touch the first option
Touch English (United Kingdom).

Let me know how you get on.

I had this problem to begin with.
Solved it by removing the battery and restarting the legend (after putting the battery back in of course).
A message popped up saying do I wish to restore backup data from the memory card (or something similar).

This was confusing as the quickstart manual mentions clicking OK to a message about data backup but I don't think this is the same message they speak about, so click cancel on this popup message.

Things should now be in English!
It appears to have set everything up properly after doing that.

Hi there! Need a bit of help here..

Picked my HTC Legend up from my local Vodafone store today after ordering online. Reading the Quick Start guide, I followed instructions and charged it up. Switched it on. An HTC screen, then a Vodafone logo, then it asked for my PIN. Put PIN in. Then it asked if I wanted to back up blah blah.. so I said yes cos a backup (whatever that meant) never hurt anyone (until now!). And then my new HTC phone displays 'ENGLISH'. I tap English, but there's no 'Next'' as the guide suggests, no, only 'Welter'. So I tap that and everything is great.. If you're German! I have followed both suggestions on this thread numerous times, but for me they don't work. Searched the net for more advice, but at a loss...

Even in German it seems like a nice phone, but English would be nice!

Sorted now. Changed my girlfriend's Samsung to German. The word 'Spache' or something like that, was all i needed to know. My new HTC phone is now English! WEIRD!!!

Hi,

Adding my question here rather than raise a new one, I have the same issue as EnglishHTCvirgin but my screen has "Sprache auswahlen" and the line underneath says "English" with a green blob next to it. No matter what I press nothing changes, and pressing "welter" simply moves me onto the next setup screen in German, very frustrating, and no there is no cog symbol on the screen. I don't know if this is because there is no SIM in the phone, as it arrived on its own without a SIM card (all the contents inside were ripped out of their plastic packets!)

Any help would be appreciated.

"Sprache auswahlen" means select language.

"Weiter" means proceed/next/further (depending on context)

I would imagine that you'd need to have a SIM card inserted to get the setup done properly.

Thanks for your reply ChirpaChirpa, looking more & more like it.
Update:- I tracked down the SIM card, the envelope was stuck inside the delivery wrapper. Put the card in and it's still all in German and it still tells me I haven't got a SIM card inserted, tried taking out and put back in as per the instructions (gold side down) still no luck.
Does Vodafone send out disabled SIMs that have to be enabled once received?

Scrub that, put it down to "Luser" error. SIM card was the right way up but the wrong way round!
As soon as it detected the card, it went straight to English.

We'll let you off cos it is pretty hard to see what your doing when inserting the sim in this phone - you are never sure if its in or is about to drop somewhere into the innards of the phone (and its even worse with the micro sd cards).

Hi all

Most smart phones pick up the language from the SIM card, so it's always best to start it up with the SIM inserted.
