HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

I bought my HTC Legend with a Vodafone contract last december and received the FroYo 2.2 Update sometime after.

Since then I've only recently really noticed that I've got this known issue.

The issue is that, once the update was carried out, whatever battery percentage was the current amount the phone believes to be 100%. And now the current displayed battery% values are all incorrect. Charging for a day only brings it to 65% from which it drains incredibly fast and stays at 2 or 3% for a quite a few hours. Turning off and on the phone again will show the correct percentage (but it never goes above 65% in my case) and no matter how long I charge the LED never turns green (even if phone is off).

I have searched the internet for solutions but there appears to not be any unless you root your device and use another ROM (i have not).

Factory reset also does not clear the battery info data and fix this issue.

I am wondering if Vodafone have a fix for this known 'bug' or not. It really annoys me since I never know how much battery I have left and I have bought a brand new battery ('fully charged') to keep around just in case the battery really is dying.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

I have the same problem although it did not start when updating to 2.2. I had a separate problem which caused the phone to constantly turn itself off so I sent contacted vodafone and received a replacement 2 days later (this was about 4 weeks ago). The replacement however has almost the exact same problem as you described although mine only charges to at most 38%.

I have tried using a friends battery that was 100% charged and it only displayed on my phone as 38%, but mine although only showing a low percentage on my phone would appear nearly fully charged on his.

Initially I didn't think this would be a problem as I thought it was just a calibration issue, but I've found that once the phone reaches around 1 or 2% it will turn off. This means the battery life is about halved because the battery is not actually drained, I can turn the phone on and get around 20 minutes extra before it switches on again. I can repeat this a few time lasting maybe 2 hours at most but it is inconvenient to say the least.

The best advice i can offer is to call the help line and ask them for a replacement, this is what i am going to try. Although im tempted to push for a different model as the replacement i have now i suspect is just a refurbished phone...

Same problem here. Sent my Legend for repair and received a replacement device. It now gets stuck at about 85% charge and refuses to go any higher.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Hi Guys

I have to admit that this is very strange that this is happening, and how frustrating it is as you can't maximise the battery life.

I would like to raise this with our support teams but I need 10 examples, so if anyone else is having this issue please let me know.

All I need to a brief description like above and the firmware that the phone is using, and then I can raise this.

Thanks

Martin

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Hey Martin,

Feeling like a valued customer now. Could you please explain why Vodafone does not take my issue serious until 9 other customers have the same problem?

Android 2.2

Build 3.14.161.1

Also, would it be possible to clarify if there are any potential safety concers with this? I assume it can't be good for the battery if the phone never stops charging it.

Thanks,

Lukas

Hi Lukas

The reason we ask for 10 examples is that it could just be 1 handset that is faulty. We need to see a precedent with this to help erase the issue could be happening with an individual handset. If it is just the one handset we would suggest sending the phone away for repair.

There are no known issues with there being any potential safety concerns, but if you are concerned please send the phone away for repair.

Thanks

Martin

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

I am also on the same android build.

Build 3.14.161.1

Android 2.2

Also i have noticed my problem getting slightly worse as i always have to have it plugged in, maybe not so much a safety issue but most likely damaging the battery.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Dear Martin (we share the same first name!)

I am very glad to hear that this will get raised, however also am sad that 10 people with the same issue is needed before this action happens.

To aid your request:

Android: (Vodafone Stock) 2.2

Build:3.14.161.1

Also, I am able to confirm that this is a known issue with the HTC Legend when updating from 2.1 to 2.2.

If you search the XDA Developers forum or the (well known) Cyanogenmod forums, you will get quite a few threads with many replies, all detailing this exact problem.

I won't post links as I'm not sure if it is allowed to make links to those sites, as using those ROMs does breach warranty.

(Even with the other ROMs that people use, there is no fix as of yet).

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Hi guys

Thanks for letting us know that you are having the same issues.

We are getting there with the examples that we need to raise this. But we still need the 10 examples to get this raised.

@ msong - If you are active on the XDA and Cyanogenmod forums, if you can ask if anyone who is on Vodafone who is having this issue to post on this thread it will mean we can get this raised quicker :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Dear Martin,

Sadly I only uncovered those threads on the other forums when trying to search for a solution myself, however to no avail.

This problem is quite irritating for obvious reasons and also concerns me for health reasons (low battery phones emit higher concentration of radiation, so I always want to keep my phone with good battery).

I have not yet called customer services, but would you know about the warranty?

I have not yet had my phone for a full 12 months, but would I be able to get a free replacement phone from Vodafone?

Many thanks

Martin S.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Hi msong,

As all our phones and battery’s are covered by the warranty we would be able to send the phone for repair however, as you are outside of your initial 7 day cooling off period we wouldn’t be able to exchange the handset for you.

As this seems to be an issue with the firmware, an exchange wouldn’t resolve the issue however it still may be worth looking at a repair whilst we gather more examples of the issue.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

[ Edited ]

I have sent my phone off to repair and it has come back, claiming the engineers completely upgraded all the internatl software.

The phone died on me within a few hours of receiving it from the shop yesterday so I left it charging overnight. I turned it on and it now shows a max of 80% instead of the previous 65%. Then it dropped again down to ~18% within 45 minutes, I charged it for a while only to show 28% battery. I turned it off then on again and now it displays 65% battery again.. same problem as before. The 'repair' did not seem to work.

I am thinking that this is a kernel issue with the battery info file, since updating from 2.1 to 2.2

This link shows other users having the exact same problem (Android forum) http://androidforums.com/legend-support-troubleshooting/265545-battery-doesnt-fully-charge.html

I am now wondering if there is anything else Vodafone can offer me instead of taking it to repair shop, not having a phone for a week, then having it returned only with no changes except all my data, apps and settings lost?

edit: I believe it is the batterystats.bin file being miscalibrated, in addition battery stats and voltage files are also kept somewhere else on the phone which I don't know. However, to access these files I would need root privileges which I dont have, and can only be obtained by voiding my warranty which I will not do.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

I've just emailed Customer Services about this issue (are we nearly at 10 yet?)

Same thing - battery not charging anywhere past 10-15% no matter how long its on for, what battery I use (I have two now, thanks to the helpful advice in-store) or charger (again, I now have two plus the usb cable). It manages to hold its charge for about 45 minutes with no use.

In-store repairs sent it back after a week with a software re-flash and a factory reset - didn't work......

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Would be great if we could get some feedback here. By the sounds of it, sending the device to be repaired doesn't help the situation. Personally, I'm not keen to spend another week without my phone if I'll receive it back in the same 'broken' condition.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Hi Everyone,

We’re still waiting for 10 examples of this. At the moment we have only had 3 people who have posted and supplied firmware information.

If you haven’t already, please make sure you post a description of the problem and your firmware/build.

Thanks

Wayne

Martin - my Legend is on 2.2 (although I can't check it because the handset is yet again off for repairs).

That's 4.....

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

Same problems here, so add one more to the list.

Android version 2.2

Build number 3.14.161.1

Frankly, it hasn't been hard to find other examples of this specifically relating to the Legend across the net.  I barely see lunchtime before my battery meter is in the red.  You might get another eight hours (how can you tell?), but in addition to the annoyance of the flashing light, which means you can't visually check if you have email or texts without turning the screen on, it also disables the camera flash rendering it completely useless in all but bright light.

I've still got 11 months left on my contract, but I'll be voting with my feet if this isn't resolved.  My wife has a Wildfire (same battery!) on Three and her phone can go a couple of days without a charge and she seems to get consistently better network coverage.  No prizes for guessing where my first port of call is likely to be.

FT.

Re: HTC Legend - Stock update from 2.1 to 2.2 Battery % Problem

I just wrote a thread on the same issue and then spotted this. I can't see how this can be a firmware issue as mine has only happened in the last week and i upgrade to 2.2 when it first came out this is what I wrote

Hello All

Hope some on can help. I have a HTC Legend which is 14 months old and the last week the battery keeps draining from 100% to 0 within a hour and the phone turns its self off . When I plug it in and switch it back on the battery does not show 0% anymore but anything from 35% - 85% put doesn't change at all when charging. After an hour or so I switch the phone off and on again and the battery shows at 100% again but as soon as I use if for phone call, message or internet within 5 minutes I have not battery again. Does anybody know if this is a battery or software issue Thanks

I still have another 10 months left on my contract and was about to buy a new battery but now not sure if it is the battery
