HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Hi Folks,

The wife and I joined Vodafone and both got the HTC Legend which we both love.

However, since the FroYo upgrade we've both encountered the same problem. Initially Android runs ike a dream - but then all of a sudden (perhaps after 24+ hours) the phones stutter and stagger like the phone is under load.

I installed an app to check CPU / Mem usage. What I've found is that the phone will go in to 100% CPU usage at these times and stay like that until the battery is flat or I reboot the handset. I wondered if it was a rogue app causing the issue but it's odd. No single app is driving the phone above 5% other than system, but that is around 30-40%. The sum of the CPU utilisation for the processes and applications shown do not tally to 100%. So it appears something else is causing this.

Perhaps this is a kenel level issue but there certainly seems to be something off with this implementation.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Hi dannyboy1121,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum Family, it's always great to see new faces on here :smileyhappy:.

It's a bit strange that the phone will all of sudden start using 100% CPU, do you notice a pattern to when this happens at all? Also, which apps do you have running when this happens?

I'd also be interested to hear if any other HTC Legend users have noticed this since the Froyo update. If this appears to be a widespread issue then I'll need to flag it up to our devices team.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Hi,

I've also got the same problem with my legend since upgrading to froyo. I've tried shutting down pretty much everything possible to find the source of the problem but have not managed to pinpoint it to any particular app or service. I'm using System Panel Lite to get cpu / memory usage stats etc.

It would be nice to get a fix as its having a major effect on battery life and the phones general performance.

Hope this helps

Gareth

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Hi,

I installed the update a few days ago after ignoring it (didnt have time to install) and my legend has been rubbish ever since.

Battery life is poor, internet is slower, apps have problems updating when using even in fast 3g areas, the whole phone is running very slowly which is beyond irritating and it takes a decade to catch up with any typing!

Hopefully a fix comes out of this because I cant use a phone this slow!

Hi, I've got the same problem. Fine if you reboot but after a day or two it's as slow as my first pc.

Forgot to mention how laggy text inputs got. Infuriating is the best way to sum it up.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

I am suffering from the same problem. It was particularly frustrating last night when I needed the GPS to get to my company Christmas dinner in London. The phone is virtually useless, even disconnecting after a call hasn't been working correctly. Also for some reason latitude thinks I am in New York. It seems to get stuck in a continual refresh loop. Please get a fix out for this fast! I'm lost without my phone.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Hi all

This looks like something we would need to raise through to our device team.

If anyone that is suffering from this issue can kindly post their now present build number on this thread, I will forward this to the device team.

To get the build number:

Home > Menu > Settings > About phone > Build number

As soon as we have this info the issue can be raised.

Regards

Build number 3.14.161.1 CL282424 The build number information wasn't directly under about phone, I had to go into software information to find it.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

I removed the battery and sim (which in itself is annoying because it resets the layout but hey ho) and it seems to be working a little bit quicker.

I also installed a CPU usage app and it flashes to 100% really quickly.

Build number - 3.14.161.1 CL282424 release keys

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

I've been having the same problems too.  Since Froyo the phone is immensely laggy, texting is near impossible, as is taking a photo or looking through the camera album.  Making or answering calls is hit and miss.  To be honest, it's soured my opinion of the phone and Android :smileysad:

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Just a little update, removing the battery and sim for a few minutes followed by a reset from the phones boot menu has yielded good results so far. Hopefully that will be it now. Will update again as sometimes it takes a few days to slow up. Gareth

Looks like I spoke too soon. I'd say its taken 15-18 hours for the performance to go south

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Facing the same issue...

Although it does get slightly better if u turn off the background data (Accounts & Sync). slightly better means that the phone becomes bearable to use.

but then you lose out on the auto syn option and some apps (market, GTalk etc) dont work.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

My phone has the same issues. It lags a lot, sometimes when I'm being called it doesn't even notice I slide the bar down to pick it up. That way I miss the call. This really frustrates me.

I installed an app to kill app's that are running in the background. This helps somewhat, but doesn't solve the problem.

I also did a hard reset to get it back to factory settings to see if it had something to do with installed app's. But nothing changed.

It is nice to see that Vodafone is taking this serious. Maybe it's not needed anymore, but this is my Build-number:

3.14.161.1 CL282424 release-keys

Hope the problem can be fixed.

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Hi,

I also have suffered very similar symptons after upgrading to FroYo. Slow text and general keyboard response. Battery life has got significantly worse even if the phone is not connected to the net and is barely getting used.

Is there any way to downgrade back to v 2.1? As this was a lot better!

Thanks

Re: HTC Legend - post FroYo - 100% CPU issue (more than one handset)

Any update on this?

I convinced my wife to go with a Legend and it was all going great until the 2.2 update which I told her to do as it is suppose to make the phone better not worse.

So, I'm getting a earfull for wrecking her phone and constant complaints about it's speed.

So, Vodafone - when will there be an update to the firmware to fix this.
