HTC Maggic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

VERY pleased to get the 2.2.1 upgrade today but the slide up menu with all the application shortcuts and widgets (from the middle icon bottom of home screen) is blank (black), no icons at all.

Anyone else had this? The phone was standrad, no rooting or anything. Haven't tried factory reset as yet, bit reluctant to do all the reconfiguring.

Cheers, Derek

Cripes! I've not heard of this happening at all. Do the black icons work? Is the rest of the interface ok?

I presumed you've tried rebooting?

No -- can't get any response by pressing in the areas where the icons might be so I'm assuming it's empty, as opposed to black on black. Good question tho.

Reboot -- again a good point, hang on a second.....

Re: HTC Maggic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

Hi

Just got my upgrade today and my menu has gone with everything on it.

I like the look if some of the upgrade but just a but pi**ed off. Why make so many changes on the upgrade and then you need to learn what they do again.

If anyone could help on whats happened it would be appreciated.

Which "menu" are you referring to?

Does sounds like it just needs another reboot really and the icons should re-appear. If not then a factory reset might be required...

Also what menu are you describing Jazzy?

I have had both updates and all working fine but it did take a while after the second update for the menu to appear...maybe 15mins...prior to that it was just a black screen. Turn it off , leave it for a few mins and turn back on again and then wait 15 mins before panicking!

Ah is this the very first boot with the new firmware? If so then yes, give it 5 mins as it will be optimising a lot of files in the background to make it faster. It will improve with speed from there on in.

Re: HTC Maggic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

That was interesting -- it took about five minutes for the widgets and shortcuts on the home screens to reappear so I thought I'd lost them as well!

But when they eventually returned, so did all the icons on the menu so I'm all sorted.

Turn it off then back on again. Doh. Thirty years in IT, why the hell didn't I think of that first!

I presume you've seen "The IT Crowd"? I'm thinking of "Have you tried turning it off and on again". Ha ha. Glad you got it sorted mate.

Got to love power cycles. I sometimes forget too for other devices but it often works ^_^ How is it running for you? Shame I no longer have the phone to play with anymore...

Re: HTC Maggic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

It's worth pointing out that it was in this state for about six hours before the reboot so I doubt if it was still doing anything in the background.

But the reboot did fix it, as far as I know, haven't found anything else untoward as yet.

Still very pleased that this has finally reached us Magic users.

Re: HTC Maggic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

Personally, I am enjoying it. The phone seems slightly more responsive, and while the actual changes are few, it all feels more polished and slick. Memory handling seems better. There are fewer times when it sits on a blank home screen while it clears out memory.

Being able to speak text into a text mesasge is great. I love the transitions. More home screens will come in handy once I've figured out what to do with it.

I do wish you could customise the launcher. I would rather have messaging than "Internet" on that.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with it. Good work, Vodafone.

Too early to tell, animations are nice, menus are subtly different, but I have a deadline for tomorrow morning so I'm trying not to play with it. Very much looking forward to voice dialing in the car. The tones seem louder as well, but can't be certain, I'll be pleased if that really is the case as I miss calls a lot when I'm out.

I've really enjoyed this phone, all I wanted was wi-fi for emails but it's changed the way I work completely, still can't believe I've got vnc working on it! Six months to go on the contract and it's Samsung Galaxy Tab time, I reckon.

Re: HTC Magic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

Nice. Looking at it from the outside in, its basically the AOSP ROM with Vodafone apps, so those who have rooted and have used CM6 have been enjoying all of these features and more for some time. However it is great news that its available officially for everyone! Enjoy the tether stuff too :smileytongue:

There's some cool 2.2 stuff and don't forget to install the new Google Maps too! The voice stuff works pretty well as you can use it for almost everything. Finding directions, local shops, voice dialling, texting etc.

As for the Launcher, you can install ADW Launcher (free) and customise that to your hearts content. You can even lock it into Memory which will prevent the homescreen reloading so often.

Another alternative is LauncherPro (I use this on my Desire HD atm) and you can customise that a lot as well.

Re: HTC Magic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

[ Edited ]

Neoblade, I've updated to 2.2.1 ok but am noticing some serious lag

Was wondering if you felt this might be because either I've filled my new homescreens, my handset is bursting full of apps, or beacuse perhaps some cache or other needs clearing of data. (please don't mention the dreaded F-F-Factory reset - I couldn't bear to start afresh!)

If this is as good as I can expect it to get in terms of responsiveness, what I'm wondering is whether CM6 would give me any improvement?

Many thanks

Re: HTC Magic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

After reading the above thread - i have turned it off for 15 minutes, and maybe i will get some menu icons.  I will clear my cache too, because this is probably full.

However, i have a bigger problem - i have no network available, meaning i cannot send messages, or call out!

Any ideas?

Re: HTC Magic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

Marshy167 - if your lack of network is not because you're out of coverage then I would recommend checking your wifi settings to ensure it's switched-off, then go to mobile networks menu and after searching for networks, manually select a network other than vodafone, then repeat and select vodafone. Hopes that helps

Wi-fi is off. I tried other networks, then back to Vodafone. No joy....

Re: HTC Magic 2.2.1 Froyo problem -- where's me menu gone?!

The ONLY other thing I personally can think to try would be to long hold the power button and switch on airplane mode to kill all radio completely - wait maybe 5 mins, then do in reverse. Other than that I'm out my depth and hope someone else with more knowledge steps-in
