Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

2.3 would be pushing it! The Magic just about handles 2.2 well enough with Stock. Will be interesting to hear of people's thoughts of the official 2.2 update though. Half tempted to install it myself...

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Will the update files make their way onto the XDA website? So we don't need to wait for the updates to arrive OTA

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Thanks, Neo. I wondered if that would be the case. I hope I get the update soon. Shame the Hotspot, live wallpaper and Flash aren't part of it. but that would be asking too much of the hardware.

Apparently the T-Mobile 2.2 has the live wallpapers, but I'm not sure I'd even want that. I never sit there and stare at the phone!

Live wallpapers would destroy the already dwindling battery life of the magic.

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Actually Google have already said that phones able to run Android 2.2.1 Froyo would run faster with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. You might want to do quite a bit of reading regarding Google's code and how It works before making any more false statements.

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Well I'm glad I wasted my Saturday evening trying and failing to root my phone! Just got to see how many weeks, months or years it takes to roll the update out now!

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Hi all

This is a two step update. As far as I am aware all devices will need to have received the 1st step, before the 2nd part will start to be pushed out. The same system was used on the Nexus updates, and the 2nd part was around 2-3 days after the initial update. So there's no need to panic. :smileyhappy:

Can you explain why "Tom" said the 2nd stage would complete after a reboot and not after a few days?

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Hi

I'm unable to confirm this, but my statement is based on the Nexus, that was updated in the same way, with all the 1st stage updates being completed, before the 2nd stages were pushed out.  I'd doubt it would be possible to send out 2 separate updates at the same time, for every device.

Tom's statement wouldn't be incorrect as such. The second stage would be updated after the 1st stage has installed and the handset restarted, just not immediately.

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

That's a clown shoes answer. If I get charged for being on hold for 20 minutes to Vodafone customer support because of the original poor description given by Tom about the update process, there will be trouble.

I will quote "Tom" for you:

"The update is a two step download which will be triggered by automatic notification to the customer's handset. The first step will change the bootloader. The second step will install FroYo after the phone has rebooted."

It seems you're suggesting that "Tom" forgot to include the words "within a few days" at the end of that statement. So it seems that the Community Manager doesn't know what he is talking about.

Re: HTC Magic - Android 2.2 Froyo Update

Rooting the Magic has been made extremely easy thesedays (same goes for many Android phones too). Its certainly nothing like it was back when I first started with the phones. Now you can just install 1 app, root, go to the Market and download ROM Manager, flash the Clockwork Recovery from within that app, make a Nandroid (which is a 100% backup of your phone), keep that safe, wipe, then flash your chosen ROM!

Also not sure who that comment by Brain was aimed at regarding 2.3 running faster than 2.2.1... It certainly will run that little bit faster for those phones that fully support it. Most will know that Gingerbread isn't a massive UX overhaul (that is reserved for HoneyComb aka 3.0) but it just adds loads of powerful APIs for developers to use under the hood.

The fact that it took this long, far beyond the Vodafone Magic's lifespan to officially get Froyo, then you could imagine how long it would take to support Gingerbread! Of course it would be nice but by the time that comes around there will be many budget handsets that offer more RAM and processing power already.

If you are rooted though then you can expect some 2.3 support from Cyanogen & other developers I'm sure. Officially though, well that's down to the carriers. Google's ultimate aim is to get all budget/low end Android phones on Android 2.x asap so it creates API parity between them and the mid-range. For more powerful phones they can expect 3.0 support as there is a minimum hardware specification to officially run it.
