HTC Magic - updating will NOT invalidate your warranty

Hi all,
I have been in a very long discussion with technical people at vodafone and I must say the person I spoke to was not only very knowledgeable but also very helpful. He was unable to confirm if the HTC Magic would be updated but I got the distinct impression he thought it unlikely.
He asked why I didn't just update it myself and I explained about the warranty. He said that was nonsense but that he would check "at the highest level" and get back to me. True to his word he rang back about 10 mins later to confirm that the warranty would NOT be invalidated, he also said he would put a note on my customer account confirming that if I carried out an update my warranty would still be valid. I have just rung customer service and asked them to see if there is a note on my account about the warranty and the lady read out the note saying that I could update etc
So it looks like we have the go ahead..now all I have to do is find someone who lives near Reading who can do it for me..Oh, I've just thought...Vodafone headquarters are just down the road maybe I could pop over and someone will help me...

So. Moderators. This now applies to all of the Magic owners, right?
What is the best method of performing the upgrade?
Why Reading!?
Thanks for calling them, SHP. Kudos to you!

"why Reading"?...because I live near Reading and work at the University, despite having "permission" to update I am a bit nervous about actually doing it!

There was a post last month that gave a really simple update method. I can't find it now. I shall keep looking.

Good to know - even though I gave up and rooted the phone anyway, as the 2.2 update's taking way too long from VF - especially with the 1.6 vulnerabilities.
I didn't see how it could void your warranty - unless you bricked your phone anyway. After all, it's only a software upgrade.
Anyway, I hope it encourages more people to root and upgrade to 2.2, as it really is a world apart from 1.6.
Definite kudos for you.

This took ages of looking through pages of unrelated stuff for other phones to find.
I think I'm going to be attempting this very soon.

I'd love to be able to try this, but daren't!
Don't understand the bit about going back to 1.6,why do I need to do that if I'm already running it?
Regards,
Andy

You need to root the phone which involves rolling back to v1.5 as you will be exploiting a security flaw in that version.
you then have to flash the T-Mobile v1.6 rom followed by 2.2 and then the OTA update to 2.2.1 will push through from Google.
It's more in depth than that so please pay attention to the instructions given in that thread.
If in doubt - don't bother as you will likely brick your phone.

@robmac74
you dont need to roll back to 1.5 to root your phone lol maybe that was an old old way of doing it but if you head on over to xda, theres an app you can download called universal androot which basically does it all for you.

Hi Guys
Apologies for the delay we're rather popular at the moment
.
So long as you update to the latest Vodafone approved software this will not invalidated your warranty.
The latest software for your handset can be found here.

Well, that is a poor reply.
A) There are no updates for the phone using the link you provide.
b) This does not answer the question this topic is about.
Are you saying that the people Wat the highest level" are wrong? Please read the first part of this thread and reply.

I see your reality distortion is working to it's full effect. You're in no way popular among HTC Magic owners. Take a guess what we think of your tedious use of smilies.
So long as you update to the latest Vodafone approved software this will not invalidated your warranty.
You mean the vulnerable software?
The latest software for your handset can be found here.
Thanks for a pointless link and worthless post.

I would have thought that a moderator here would think twice before disagreeing with the Vodafone technical support staff "at the highest level".
It does leave me wondering what to believe when different arms of the company give you different advice.
I am surprised that the moderators here haven't said they will look into this, and have totally ignored this subject.
Yes, we got the one reply from Sukhi, but that single reply was utterly useless, and didn't address the point in any way. I'm not sure she even read the post to be honest.
Moderators: Can you please look into this and let us know what the status of this is? The technical people who are (no offense) obviously more knowledgeable than you have stated one thing which you have refused to comment on, and one of you has disagreed with.
Please look tell us you will look into this, and don' t expect us to wait for months with no reply, then get all whingy when you are asked again about it.
And please, don't just ignore this.
