HTC Sensation OTA ICS - Installation Problems

Please could anyone help with the following?

I have just tried installing Android 4.0 (ICS).  I am currently on version 3.32.161.11

However; when I "install now"; the phone powers off, and stays off.  When you turn it back on; I receive a "Triangle symbol"; with a yellow exclaimation mark and a single stationary android character.

Hoping that this was now upgrading; I left this for 12 hours overnight.  The phone has actually crashed; removing the battery allows it to start normally.

The phone is rooted; but appears to work absolutely perfectly; and I wouldn't expect this to be related.  (I wanted to delete some Apps that I hadn't agreed to the T&C)

Software update:

System \ About Phone \ Software update \ Check Now

You can't be rooted to flash an OTA as the system needs to be 100% stock - if you've removed any apps you will need to restore them to flash the OTA

Re: HTC Sensation OTA ICS - Installation Problems

Fantastic thank you; you sound as though you actualy know!  (As opposed to wild speculation you frequently get on the internet).

If I use the inbult option of restoring the phone back to factory settings; will this get around the problem or would I be wasting my time and need to acquire ICS from some other source?  Could you point me to a URL if this is the case - not a big fan of doing this; just wanted to "slim down" the phone.

If Vodafone are concerned with the processor being overclocked to an inch of its life - I would understand why they have put this restiction in.  Although a failure message of why the upgrade is failing would be nice (hint should anyone read this).

It's the same with the unbranded handsets. Basically the OTA file patches the original files so if any of them are missing it'll fail to install. Doing a factory reset won't bring the apps back as you've deleted them from the ROM.

The only way to get them back is to flash a Vodafone RUU (ROM Update Utility) but the only one I've seen surface is 1.27.161.1 one so you'd then have to go through each OTA to get back up-to-date

As you don't seem to care much for the 'warranty' then you could the whole hog and debrand the phone but doing so will wipe everything off it. To do this you can follow thie guide I posted on XDA (but you do need to be S-OFF to do it)

Re: HTC Sensation OTA ICS - Installation Problems

That's fantastic; thanks for all of the help.  I will do as advised.

P.S.  I do care for the warrenty; but to have advertising forced on me using my bandwidth/Memory/Battery when it is in short supply; annoys me.   I'm sure Vodafone will be reasonable in the event of a failure.  If you bought a notebook and formatted & reinstalled it; I don't see how warrenty could be voided; unless it was related to the failure (eg overclocking).
