HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Hi,

My HTC sensation received an update the other day. I presume it is Ice Cream Sandwich as fonts, menus, etc. have all changed. However, not sure if this is just me, but the phone is now struggling to keep up. Clicking on things it can now take a few seconds for the click to be registered (the phone kind of stalls/freezes in between) and it's very frustrating - it's definitely a lot slower than before and I keep selecting things, thinking it hasn't registered the touch/click, then winding up in the wrong place when I click again. This seems to affect both the OS itself (e.g. going into settings menus) and the apps (e.g. Dolphin browser, Facebook, games, etc.).

I have tried uninstalling a couple of things like my data usage monitor (I notice this version of Android now has it built in anyway) in case it's CPU. Is there anything else I can do to restore the once snappy performance, though? And if not, how easy is it to revert to the previous version of the OS?!

Thanks

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Hi meddc and rohit

It’s always advisable to back up all your information and perform a factory reset after a major update such as this.

Can you try this and let me know how you get on?

  1. From the Home screen, press , and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Storage > Factory data reset.
  3. Tap Reset phone, and then tap Erase everything.

You can find your PM inbox here

Thanks

Wayne

If you have a spare minute could you please take the time to fill out a short feedback form about me?

You can do so here

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

I have exactly the same experience and I performed a factory reset about a day after ICS nstallation as I noticed a couple of apps weren't working properly.

I've also noticed I'm running out of RAM a lot more regularly, when I go to task manager I often have circa 50MB free and the task list is full of apps I haven't used for hours.

Either way my phone really feels awful now.  I was looking forward to the ICS upgrade for so long but now I really wish I uninstall ICS and have my phone back.

Is this a widespread problem?

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

I have the same issue with mine.

Intially everything was brilliant and super quick, hence happyness for ICS upgrade. Then after a day everything started to bog down the same as the other users above.

Has anyone had any luck with factory resetting. Naturally this would speed the phone up anyway but does it have any relevance to the ICS upgrade?

Hi guys,

I've been tearing my hair out for a week with the same problem since I upgraded. I've managed to overcome it by turning my phone off and taking out the battery and re-starting it again. Everything seems perfect now. Almost went through with a factory reset, too!

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Hi Guys,

When it comes to the new ICS update the OS is a little bigger than the old version and as such it does require more memory and processor power to run.

I have been doing some testing with the HTC Sensation over the past week and have not really noticed a difference in the speed of the phone.

However when it comes to the memory It is always advisable to use an such as app2sd which gives you the ability to store your apps on the memory card rather than the phone memory, this will then speed up the device and free up some memory for you.

Also if you use the inbuilt task killer you will also notice the performance increase as this will then close all of the open apps and help speed up the phone as the processor will not be as busy.

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Well I went for the factory reset... quite annoying to have to set everything up again (all my shortcuts, apps, settings, alerts, etc.). Yes, it's quicker now, but I suspect this is because half my apps didn't reinstall and I'm now running without the Lookout app which I had before along with a number of others. I suspect that it's only faster because it's had a clean-out, in other words.

For a supposedly tech reply from the tech team, I'm afraid that is completely wrong.  The phone has internal *storage* as well as the SD card.  Moving the apps to the SD frees up space on the phones own storage.   The RAM or memory which is used for running processes will be used up when you run a process regardless of if you have moved it to the SD card or not.

I haven't been on here for a while since I broke away and went for custom ROMs, but it saddens me to see so many people still having problems.  I used to have a few with the Sensation, but since running custom ROMs and more importantly custom kernels, they all seem to have gone away.

I now get a solid signal most of the time, even when my wifes iPhone doesn't.

The phone runs so much faster, slicker and smoother , yet cooler and with much longer battery.

I could go on and on, but it appears obvious to me the stock Vodafone build of the ROM does not do this phone justice.

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

I am also getting very frustrated with the update. It has made the phone shocking to use and to the extent even the unlock screen freezes for upto five seconds before the homescreen appears. I have also missed calls as dragging the answer button to answer is so slow it freezes. I am not alone with this as my fiance, brother and a work colleague have all noticed the same slowness with their newly updated Sensations. Are there any updates coming from Vodafone in relation to this?

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

I use my Sensation mainly for checking emails and sending text messages. Since updating it can take over a minute for the built in text or email app to complete starting up. For that minute I usually have a fine checkerboard screen with only the notification bar on show. By the time it loads up I have often either forgotten what I was going to do or got side tracked.

Everything seems to have a delay now. I press the power button to wake the phone and it is a second or so before the lock screen appears.

The touch screen is a few steps ahead of the display and I often find I press once, nothing happens, I press again and when the app loads up the second press is then processed, usually taking me to a submenu.

When an alarm goes off it takes a few seconds for the phone to respond to me cancelling it. There is a delay in answering calls as well.

All the above is new behaviour that has coincided with the ICS update. I have not installed any new applications since and have gone on a bit of a cull and deleted and uninstalled various apps and data.

I have turned off the 'Tell HTC' option - I had this on before the ICS update.

I have moved all applicable apps to the SD card. I have 456mb free of the 1175mb internal storage.

I do not consider my Sensation to be in a usable state at the moment. I'm not using anything exotic or resource hungry - just the basic phone functionality.

I have a year left on my contract but the phone is no longer fit for purpose through no fault of mine.

I would like to know if this is being investigated as it is obviously an issue but nobody at Vodafone seems to be taking it seriously.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your posts here.

We do take all feedback seriously however, when it comes to firmware it is not ourselves that create the firmware and as such are unable to release an update for you. (This would need to come from HTC)

If it is that you feel that the phone is not working as it should then you would need to send the phone away for repair either through us or through the manufacturer directly.

From the different posts on here it does sound like there is a difference in what people perceive as the phone running slow, if it is struggling to load up the menu screen or themes then this is an issue that needs to be investigated further.

For the ability to test this we do need to test this on a fresh install unit that has no application on it and also tested with the apps installed.

Once done if you can post us the results including a list of installed apps we will be able to raise this for you.

James

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

I've just got mine back from being repaired, installed ICS only to find it really drags it's feet.

Thought the dual core Processor would keep it snappy.

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

I think I might have found a fix for the slowness. It has made mine and the girlfriends sensations much quicker. Could people try and then report back on here...

Go to settings, power and untick "fast boot". Once thats done restart your phone and should be better.

Cheers

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Alex's solution seems to have worked for me.

I did as he said, unticked Fast Boot. then shut down, removed battery, replaced it, started up and everything is much faster.

Cheers Alex!

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Alex's solution has also worked for me - Phone was slow to the point of unusable before disabling fast boot, now it is just as quick as before update. Thanks!

Re: HTC Sensation slower after ICS update

Is anyone else having trouble with the sd card always unmounting?

I have tried to format the card and done a factory reset, but no joy?

You'll probably find you can turn on the fast boot again once you have done one reboot without it.
