HTC TP2 - Synching contacts etc, The best method

As posted else where, I've just sourced another TP2, so went through my contacts on the 'old' TP2. What I did, rightly or wrongly was I edited and brought up to date all the data in "Contacts", deleted the contacts on the SIM card, then copied the fresh and updated versions from "Contacts" onto the SIM.
I then put the SIM into the 'new' TP2 and copied them into "Contacts". The result has been a total disaster so maybe I've done it all wrong, but it has taken a considerable amount of time and will continue to do so, sorting out the resulting mess.
So...................... have I done it wrongly, and if so, how should I have done it? Is ActiveSync the correct method or should I have used MS MyPhone or whatever it's called?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi DLA17,
When you say it has not worked correctly please can you confirm exactly what has happened and how your contacts are now appearing and how you would like them to appear?
When changing your phone there are a few methods including Activesync, Vodafone 360 and varius other 3rd party apps.
I personally would always use Vodafone 360 where possible as it syncs remotely and is completely free to use.

James,
Some contacts have disappeared completely, some which had both a landline and mobile number, only one of them has 'survived'. It would appear that in "Contacts", the default setting for a number is "Mobile", but a lot of them are landline numbers so I have to go through each Contact and where it's a landline number, edit and change the category to "Company" or whatever.
In your reply, you mention 2 types of synching and is there not also MS MyPhone? What's the point of all these methods, why can't we have one simple method which works? Just to confuse things even more, within the phone there's talk about synching with Outlook, well I don't use Outlook, nor do I have an Exchange server, whatever that might be!
Quite honestly, my core question is why didn't what I did work? All my contacts were as I wanted them, I saved them to the SIM card, put it into my new phone, copied from the SIM to "Contacts", and disaster!
I can appreciate that different systems/methods might have additional things that they can do but as we're all regularly changing and upgrading handsets, surely there should be one simple method/system which simply 'does what is says on the tin'! I've got a supposedly 'all singing all dancing' phone yet it would appear that I can't simply transfer contacts from one handset to another.
