HTC Wildfire - Internet sharing (tethering ) stopped working

I took my laptop away with me and was able to use the HTC to collect mails onto the PC (I know I could read them on the HTC but my wife likes to use the laptop). I used it for a couple of weeks and all was well.
On returning home I uploaded an Android update (now on 2.1 -update 1) and when i next went away and tried to use the HTC for internet sharing it did not work. The HTC recognised it was in internet sharing mode and the laptop also had a connected active connection but neither mail nor internet would connect on the laptop.
On my return home I tested the HTC against the desktopin case there was something 'wrong' with the laptop but the symptoms were identical.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for your post on this. I'm sorry to hear that this isn't working for you now
Can you confirm exactly what is happening when you try and connect? (With both the computer and the phone)
Also what error messages do you get?
Please let me know and this will better aid us in our quest to solve your issue
Cheers

On the PC, I can 'show all connections' and the connection to the HTC is showing as 'connected' after briefly aquiring the address (again, this is normal).
Now if I try to retrieve mail on the PC I get an error like this
The server responded with an error. Account: 'Googlemail ', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 209.85.227.109 (209.85.227.109:995), connect error 10060', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90
and if I try to browse the internet I get
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems
More informationThanks,
Chris.

Hmmm, this definitely sounds strange
Are you able to connect to the internet on your Wildfire without any issues? If so, I suspect that the issue may be happening because your phone is set to connect via the WAP APN instead of the INTERNET APN. I'd recommend following the Internet setup guide on our HTC Wildfire Help page to create a new APN. Once this is done, try internet sharing again.
Give that a go and let me know how you get on

I had certainly no changed any APN entries and it was working on both my PCs up until the last Android update.
I still get the connection showing as connected (on the PC) and my internet being shared according to the HTC.
Sorry to draw a blank but this is a bit frustrating as I wish to use the tethering to save buying 'dongle' time when away in our motorhome.

Chris.

I agree it is a very good idea to take the Wildfire and save yourself some money.
I have been looking around the internet for a solution as I don't have any way to test this for you and on the Android forums I can see similar instances with a HTC Hero suddenly not tethering after a software update.
I can't find a guaranteed resolution however a HTC representative advised a factory reset to try and fix this issue. This may be worth a shot however I recommend you back up everything on your phone to a PC so you don't lose your media files. To factory reset the Wildfire:
Touch the MENU key
Touch Settings
Scroll to and touch Privacy
Touch Factory data reset
Touch Reset phone
Touch Erase everything.
I know its not the ideal solution however its all I can think of, please try this and let me know if it enables the internet sharing again.
Thanks

Hi Holly, thanks for the response. I am not bothered about the picture data I have on the phone (easily copied to/from PC) but how would I save my address book. Also would I have to reinstall all my apps?

Chris.

I tend to agree here as it looks like a bit of an issue with other people.
On the link that you have added, it did look like there is a solution by holloweyes33. Have you tried this?
You can back everything up with the desk top manager, if you connect the phone to this via a PC you will be able to back everything up, you can also install Vodafone People from the Market and you can easily sync your numbers to that.

See this post too
and you will see that it looks like a DNS issue.
Although I have an IT background it is not in PCs and I would not like to change any DNS server setting on my (or the wife's!!!) computers.
I hope you can talk to Android as it looks like the ooperating system update has cause this issue (there are many more complaints on the Android Forum).
My background is in managing suppliers to give a coordinated IT service to my customers so I am very familiar in how companies need to get together to resolve things like this.
It will not be good enough to bat the ball over the net and blame others, this needs to be resolved together.
Many thanks.
Chris.

The latest android release (2.2 Froyo) seems to have cured this one - an android issue then.
