HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

Hi Folks,

I have just worked out how to access my usage on the Vodafone website. I see that on a regular basis, about once or twice a day, I see web usage of about 1 -2 MB at times when I know my phone is not being used to access the web. Late at night or in the early hours. Is the phone accessing the web by itself because I have left something connected?

Re: HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

Hi,

Common causes can be if you've got apps running in the background or a service set up to poll the internet for information. A typical example would be an email client. Sometimes a client can be set to check the internet for new emails at certain intervals, the phone would then need to make a network connection and pull new data (even if there are no emails to pull it'll still use up kbs in going online to look in the first place).

I'd first check to see what apps are running in the background via the task manager, then check for any email clients.

Re: HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

Thanks for the reply.

How do I check for Apps running in the background.

As for chat, I have never used unless to switch onto it by mistake. Never had a chat but guess I should check. Again, how do I do that.

Re: HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

Hi EssexJim,

Thanks for the additional questions.

Android should automatically close any applications that are not in use but you can try any task killer app that will be available form the Android Market.

Regarding chats; there's a multitude of chat applications available form the Market. It's just a case of you finding which ones you've downloaded. I expect, in your case and judging by the type of question you ask, this doesn't apply. I do know there's a Google Talk application that is pre-installed. Tap that one. If there are any chats active then it'll be indicated there :smileywink:

Failing that, if you have any applications set to automatically update when one is available, this could also have a bearing on data usage.

Do you have WiFi set to sleep when in standby? If so, any applications could be updating when the handset is in standby and therefore will not be updating through WiFi.

Cheers,

Lee

Re: HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

Thanks for the reply Lee.

Sorry I have not followed this up further. Here's the reply.

To be honent the only app I use in the Navagation and I take care to 'exit navigation' when I have finished.

As said before, I have never used chat, and I don't have an app for Goggle Chat so I guess I don't access it. I have peep for twitter, which again I don't use. So should I delete it and if so how? I have one called Talk. Again should I delete? Another called Friend Stream? Again delete?

I have tried turning my phone off at night. What I have found is that as soon as I turn the phone on I get a 2.5MB download!

Is there anyway to see what the phone is accessing at this time?

Getting really hacked off now because I am consistantly going over my allowance!

Unhappy of Essex!

Re: HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

Hi EssexJim.

I'd advise you download a free app/task killer form the Android Market. There are a few to choice from, but I'll leave it to the eForum member to advise you which is the most effective.

What this will do is show you what's running on your device, and also how to shut them down. Some apps to have permissions to restart after shutting down, so if you can see a repeat offender then uninstalling that app may be the best answer.

Re: HTC Wildfire accessing Internet by itself?

probably a bit late for this but also check the handset to see what is syncing with the internet.

go to settings then Accounts & Sync.

check in there to see which ones have been set up for auto sync, and change update schedule to manual

this should stop the phone syncing at strange hours in the night....

i know the gmail app does this.

bloody wakes me up at 2 am without fail to let me know i have an email. just keep forgetting to put my phone on silent lol
