ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

My phone upgraded to ICS and since then my wireless connection (which I use at home as 3G signal is rubbish) has stopped working.  It worked for about an hour then stopped (although it still says that I'm connected and signal strength is good).  I did a factory reset and it started working again for about an hour and has stopped again.  Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Hi ongleyhz,

Welcome to the Vodafone eForum from all from the team.

I have taken a look at this for you and done a little testing with a MIFI device that we have available in the office and can’t see any issues.

However looking at this I can see that there is a sleep profile setting that if set incorrectly can cause the WIFI connection to drop when the phone locks (goes to sleep)

To change this simply press Menu – Settings – WIFI – Menu – Advanced – select keep WIFI on During Sleep – select always.

You can also turn on best WIFI experience within this menu.

James

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Thanks but I already have "always" selected.  And the best WiFi experience checked doesn't make any difference.

Is there anyway to remove ICS and go back to the old one as it's obviously that update that has mucked it up?

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

I've noticed the exact same problem. Connected to my wifi and all working fine but then all of a sudden the connection stops working, even though the phone says it's still connected with a good signal. I find a restart kicks it into action against hut then after a few hours it's back to square one again.

Glad it wasn't just me imagining things!

Any new ideas?

Hi guys,

Can you confirm for me if you have the same issue with any other Wi-Fi connection, for example a friend's home Wi-Fi or public free hotspot? This would help to see whether the issue is specific to the network connection or the phone.

If it seems to work OK on other networks, please can you confirm the Wi-Fi settings Under Settings > Wi-Fi > (the chosen network) > Advanced options on both yours and the other one you test on? If you are unable to test on another, please just confirm the settings for yours.

Also, in case the issue is down to the Wi-Fi router having cached something which is affecting the connection with the newer firmware, can you also restart the router for me to flush this out?

It's possible that something in the upgrade has made a change to the handling of these network connections, so checking these will help to cache that.

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

I went into Costa today and connected to their wireless network (I didn't bother getting the password, I just connected and went to the login screen).  Then when I got home my phone automatically connected to my wireless and it worked!  However it's just lost the connection this evening and I've had to enter the wireless passcode, but it's worked once I've done that.  I'll see what it's like tomorrow morning as it seems to stop working about 30 mins after I've started using it in the mornings.  If it does I'll try restarting the router and let you know how I get on.

Just to let you know that logging onto another wireless network seems to have fixed the problem as my phone has now been fine since yesterday lunchtime.  Thanks.

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Hi

After hours of searching to try to find a solution to this problem I tried this solution and all was well for a couple of hours now I have the original problem. I've tried the 'forget' and then re connecting, entering password etc but although before trying to connect the signal shows as 'excellent' as soon as I try to connect the signal goes to 'poor' and it just keeps saying 'obtaining IP address'.
Has anyone found any way round this??? There are so many posts on various forums about this yet HTC and Vodafone deny any knowledge that this is an issue.

Thank you!

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Hi GB75,

To be honest this doesn’t seem to be affecting all of the HTC Sensation users however before we can raise this to our devices teams for investigation please can you confirm that you have tried the following;

Forget the WIFI network.

Perform a master reset of the phone.

If you have done both of these and are still experiencing the same issue, please let me and I will be able to look at this for you however, we will need a minimum of 3 people with the issue before it can be raised.

I would also recommend looking at sending the phone away for a free of charge repair to rule out the chance of a faulty WIFI chip in the phone.

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Hi,

I found the following post on a similar problem.  Their wireless stopped working mainly at night/first thing in the morning (same as me) so I followed their advice and disabled the Show Me Widget.  It seemed to work (I'd also done a factory reset) until the following morning when the Wireless stopped working again, however later that day I logged onto another wireless network (which I'd tried before) and it started working without having to do a factory reset.  Not sure if it was a combination of logging onto the different network and having Show Me Widget disabled that worked but it's worth a try!

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Hi,

I have the same problem, when my phone sleeps i disconnect from my wireless connection. I have tried all mentioned in this topic to no avail. Its annoying having to connect to the internet every time i use my phone. Can I just say its also happening on the mobile network, no connection until I have to turn it on???

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Hi Kasey,

Many thanks for getting in touch regarding your WIFI issue.

Can I ask if you have tried to connect to another WIFI hotspot? Does this do the same?

Also in regards to using the mobile network please can you elaborate a little more on this one as its not very clear about what is happening.

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

I have to say I have not tried to connect to another WIFI hotspot.

What happens is when I for example want to go on facebook i have to go into the settings and connect to my WIFI.

I have the "keep WIFI on during sleep" as always.

This I thought might be a problem with WIFI but my wifes Desire S works perfectly as did my Sensation pre update.

I was listening to SKY radio but when my phone went dark( sleep) the radio went off and I had to restart it as it said my network coverage was not there.

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

James,

After a few days of working fine my phone has now stopped again.  It always seems to be about 8 - 8.30 in the morning, when I try at 7am it's fine.  Not sure if something starts running then that knocks it out...

I'll try and find another wireless network today and connect to that to see if it works again but obviously I can't always do that and need a proper solution.  Have enough people raised this as a fault for Vodafone to start looking at it?

Re: ICS Upgrade - now can't connect using wireless

Thanks for the help but i'm sorted now.

I did a factory reset and it works like a dream.

Not sluggish anymore.

Wireless works great.

I was getting a few problems accepting and taking calls, sorted.

Face recognition now knows my ugly mug lol.

Majority of my apps work (emailed Sky about Sky go)

You read about the guys from Vodafone saying " do a factory reset " but if you don't try you'll not know.

Hi Kasey,

That’s great news, thanks for letting us know. :smileyhappy:

Hi ongleyhz

Can you try what Kasey has done and let us know how you get on? Don’t forget to back up all your information before doing so though.

Thanks
