Location, maps and weather issues

Hello,

I have an HTC Legend, recently updated to froyo. I have a problem with the weather widget not updating my location, and I get 'location temporarily unavailable' when I try to locate myself on maps.

When I frst got the phone and for the first month both apps worked very well, showing my location exactly. After the froyo update both arent working very well. The weather wigit occasionally updates my location, (often when I have been across town) and then stays there for a week or so. Also maps used to work very well with just my internet connection. Now I have to turn on gps and even then it doesnt always work and is not as good as it was before.

I had installed some apps, which I have now uninstalled thinking maybe one of them was causing the problem but the problems remain.

I have auto sinc on, I have tried combinations of wireless, internet and gps, all on, some on, one on, but nothing seems to work. I have removed the battery and restarted as well.

I was surprised at how useful these apps were and am disappointed that they are not working so well now, especially maps.

Can someone suggest what the problem is and how I might fix it.

ty.

Re: Location, maps and weather issues

Hi mett

I have to admit, I have seen this a few times over the last 12 months.

If you can go to Menu > Settings - Location, then select Use Wireless Networks. This should be determined by Wi-Fi and/or mobile networks.

Every time I saw this, the above fixed it.

If you can let me know how you get on, that would be fantastic :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks

Martin

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

I have had 'Use Wireless Networks' ticked. I have tried turning it off and on again but this hasnt fixed the problem.

Re: Location, maps and weather issues

Hi mett

Judging from the original post, you've tried all the individual location methods unsuccessfully, but there are things which can affect location

Firstly, can you ensure you're in a wide open area with no tall buildings, tress or the like around you. Whilst this will mainly affect satellites, a clear line of sight can prevent issues by any method so should be ensured at all costs, especially in areas where building materials may affect signal normally.

Secondly, can you make sure that you've got no nearby electrical interference which may be interfering with the signal.

If it still shows as out of sync, then please try a hard reset on the handset for me:

 - Switch the handset on
 - Whilst powered up, remove the SIM card and battery
 - Put the battery back in and switch on
 - Wait a couple of minutes, then remove the battery again
 - Replace the SIM and battery and switch back on

Let us know how you get on!

Dave

Re: Location, maps and weather issues

Nothing has changed in my immediate environment, re trees or tall buildings or magnetic interference. The weather widget location, and maps location used to work very well just with mobile connection.

I followed the instructions on the hard reset, and it hasn't fixed the problem.

It has been over a month now that the weather widget and maps cant update my location, when I'm on my side of town.

I have noticed that when I cross town, both apps work very well just of the mobile connection, as it used to work where I live until about a month ago.

So it doesnt look like the problem is with the app or the phone?

cheers,

Re: Location, maps and weather issues

Hi there mett,

Many thanks for trying the above suggestions.

If the hard reset hasn't worked then it may be time for us to take a look at the handset. Please head over to our General FAQ's section where you can find information on obtaining a free of charge warranty repair.

Regards,

Re: Location, maps and weather issues

Both the weather wiget and the 'find you location' on maps are now working well again.

I've no idea what happened, they both just started working again about a day ago.

Thanks for the replies,

Mett.
