Magic and Slingplayer mobile

[ Edited ]

Hi everyone

Back in September last year, I installed Slingplayer mobile to my awful Google Branded Magic - not so much for the obvious delights of watching TV when stuck in a traffic jam, for the resolution made it only barely watchable, but mainly so I can program the digital TV recorder when I'm away from home and have forgotten to do something.

After the December upgrade the app still worked although more prone to hanging if on 3G, but still ok on my home network via wifi - now if I try to connrct via 3G, I can get no connection at all, and it asks to make sure the phone and slingbox are connected to the internet.

Have they blocked streaming media traffic? If so, any chance of Vodafone refunding my $30 for software that is now useless to me?

Also I have noticed a 4 fold increase in data traffic in the past month that I cannot explain and I now get text messages that I am approaching my 500mb (when I strted this contract it was allegedly unlimited) data limit and they want another fiver if i go over. The problem with the billing system is I cannot do a day by day check to find where the data is going - one day there was a 140mb block went, but I cannot find out what it is a month later, or indeed what I was supposed to be doing on line.

This is just to me another nail in the vodafone coffin, and my contract is up in the next 3 weeks, so after 16 years with Vodafone it might be time to go elsewhere.

Sorry to be so Mr Angry, but I've had a gutfull of Vodafone and customer (dis)service and the deception that was the Magic....

Anyway, do we know if the streaming media has been cut off? And has anyone else noticed a data useage increase that they can't explain?

Re: Magic and Slingplayer mobile

Hi kryten4xp

I can understand how annoying this must be to have a service working then it stop.

I suspect this may be barred due to content which  may explain why this doesn't work.  I can remember quite some time ago  we did have some problem with RTSP streaming due to the fact we cannot guarantee that the streaming content isnt offensive, I can remember a work around that was put in place, however I would like to speak to some of my contacts internally about this to make sure its the best approach for this problem.

I would say if your having problems with your Data usage, it may be worth  having a read of this thread.

I will reply back  once I have had a chance to speak to the relavent people regarding the streaming media issue, I have a simular set up at home  but havent  exploited this recently so It might be worth me testing this as well.

Thanks

Thanks Ben

I bit the bullet yesterday and vented my spleen to the disconnections department, who unbelievably managed to sign me up for another 18 months with an HTC Desire - during the conversation they assured me that streaming content would not be blocked, but having received my new phone this morning and installed Slingplayer, I find myself back to the same place...... fine on wifi on my home network, but refuses to connect on H or 3G, telling me to make sure the slingbox is turned on and my phone connected to the internet - wifi connection being OK takes care of the Slingbox being on aspect, and as Google searching works fine via Vodafone's network I must be connected too...... I got a friend to connect via the internet to the Sliingbox from his PC, and that was fine too so uplink speed from the Slingbox isn't an issue.

I now have 1GB of data attached to my new package, and I have installed 3G Watchdog so that I can monitor usage on a daily basis for any anomalies.

As they promised me that my Slingplayer would work, I've now got 6 days to do this or "sling" (excuse the pun) the phone back to them and go elsewhere to a network that isn't blocking traffic.

Any help you can be will be very much appreciated

Thanks

Russ

Hi kryten4xp

I have just spoken with Ben and he is still awaiting the information.

As soon as he gets this he will come straight back onto this thread.

Re: Magic and Slingplayer mobile

Hi kryten4xp

Hmm so  both the magic and Desire  wont stream I suspect this maybe a firmware issue, can you confirm which firmware your running on your Desire?

Did you notice if you had updated your magic  then this service stopped  working?

What ports are you using to stream via your sling box? are you using the Sling player app at all?  I've looked at the requirements and as long as you're in a area that has a download speed of 150Kbps (or higher)

Unfortunatly I dont have a slingbox to test at the moment, I've tried to see if my VPN to my home network is working and I appear ot be able to connect to my home Pc's and my home Media box.

I can confirm that RTSP streaming isnt blocked  However I note that Sling box uses VC-1 encoding to stream. I'm still awaiting a response on if this is blocked or not. I would suspect not as its one of the main streaming encoders out there.

Thanks
