Mail App formatting problem

I have had my Wildfire S for a few weeks and have just noticed a problem with the formatting of emails when replying to ones received. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?

I use the built in mail programme and my provider is BT Internet (Yahoo). Problem is as follows:

1.   First time I reply to an email the format (paragraphs etc) look fine, both in the composing screen and also in the sent items folder BEFORE I submit the reply to the server.
2.   The next two or three replies look correct in the composing screen BUT when I view them in the sent items folder, the formatting is all stripped out. In these cases though the recipient receives the emails correctly formatted.
3.   After the fourth reply the formatting, when viewed in the sent items folder has gone and also from then on the recipient receives the email with no formatting at all.

I have reported this to HTC but am not too hopeful after going through the usual advice which has got me nowhere so far. (I am also running the latest version of Android)

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Hi src59,

That's unusual. I've seen formatting lost on the email you're replying to on various platforms and programs, but losing it on the email you're sending, including in your sent items, is something else.

Does this happen with every email chain? If not, is there a pattern such as the reply email address provider?

Is it always the same pattern when it happens, or is there anything different about any of the emails which seems to affect this, for example an attachment, link, length?

Are you selecting "Respond inline" on the emails, and do you do this every time? This does remove the formatting and attachments on the original email.

Do you have any other email address set up, and does this happen on that one as well? If not, can you set up a free email account such as yahoo, Gmail or hotmail on your phone and test by sending yourself emails and replying to them using that address as sender and receiver.

Hi Dave

Thanks for replying:

It does happen with every email replied to, not just certain addresses.

It follows the exact same pattern. I have tried third party email clients and done as you suggested – there is no problem with these .

I have noticed the following too. If I reply again to an email that is viewed in sent items in the stripped out format, the original email (where the format was stripped out) appears properly formatted in the new message, but the new message itself appears stripped out.

It seems that each initial reply is stripped out, but subsequently ‘recovers’ – so long as you are continually responding in a kind of ‘conversation’ way.

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Hi src59,

I’ll be honest, along with Dave, I have never seen this sort of issue before.

The only conclusion I can come to is that there is s light glitch in the firmware of the phone. Have you tried backing everything up and performing a master reset of the device?

Thanks

Wayne

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Wayne

Thanks for responding.

I have now checked again by using my wife’s wildfire S – purchased at the same time as mine. Should have been the obvious thing to do in the first place.

Anyway – the problem is exactly the same on hers too and I wonder if you could get hold of a wildfire S at your end and see if you can replicate the issue.

To help you, I will try and explain exactly what happens and in what order:

  1. Send a test email to someone else or yourself -it doesn’t matter which.
  2. When you have sent it, you should then look in your sent items folder and you will see that it IS in the correct format, and will be received as such.
  3. Reply to the test email and then look in the sent emails folder. This time you will see that the reply message has had all the formatting stripped out BUT will be received properly.
  4. Reply to that message too and look in the sent items folder again. This time you will see that the first reply appears correctly formatted BUT the most recent response has all the formatting stripped out. This continues for each subsequent reply.

It seems therefore that each reply has the formatting stripped out, but when there is a chain of emails, each one following on in sequence, the latest has the formatting stripped out but the earlier ones are ‘reformatted’ in some way.

Hey src59,

Thanks for the detail. I've not got access to the device cupboard right now so I'll mark this for one of the team to look at on Monday.

Cheers,

Hey src59,

I'm sorry you've not been replied to. I'd have thought a colleague might have picked this up by now.

Ok, so I've got my hands on the Wildfire S and set up my Gmail account on it. I've then sent a test email from my work address to my personal address. I've then replied and replied again and again. I've not been able to replicate the issue so would therefore request you try the factory reset as per Wayne's suggestion.

Could you let me know the firmware version you are currently running please?

Cheers,

Lee

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Hi

I have tried a factory reset on my own phone. I do not think it would be helpful to do the same on my wife’s phone as well.

Are you saying that your tried your Gmail account on the built in email app? Or did you use the gmail app?

My wife and I both use btintenet  as our mail provider, I would ask that you try to replicate this fault with a btinternet account using the built in mail app specifically.

Thanks again for trying, but neither of us are getting anywhere with this at the moment.-

Sorry. I should have added that we are both using the very latest firmware.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to barge in, but the problem may be with the bt-internet account settings, but I,m not sure?

It sounds to me as though somewhere along the line the Emails are being sent as "Plain Text" and at other times as HTML (with formatting).

It might be worth checking your bt-internet email settings on your PC, to see if it is set to send emails as "Plain text". If it is, change it to "HTML".

This may account for the Formatting being stripped out then reappearing again?

As I say I'm not 100% sure, but might be worth investigating?

Hi

Thanks for your interest and advice.

I have checked and the mail settings are HTML.so that does not appear to be the cause.

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Hi src59

It was a shot in the dark...! :smileysad:

Have you tried a different Email App such as "Handcent SMS" from Android Market here

On the Galaxy S for a while the Stock email app didn't work very well until there was a firmware update.

Give Handcent a try and see if that makes a difference?

Yes. I've tried several (I will look at the one you suggest too though).and they all work fine.

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Ahh, so it looks like the Default Email App is the problem then. As I said this was the case with an earlier version of Android for the Galaxy S.

Just don't use the default App...!

It's only there as an option anyway. If one of the others works well then I would stick to that!

Handcent is definitely one of the best I have used... :smileywink:

Re: Mail App formatting problem

I have had a look at handcent - unless I have looked at the wrong thing, it doesnt seem to be an email app. Rather its an sms app.

Re: Mail App formatting problem

Hi src59

Thanks for your post here.

The only way I see us replicating this is if we setup a BT Internet account on our office phone and see what happens. Now, I’m not sure if anybody in our team have BT Internet accounts so, would it be possible for us to speak to you over the phone and use your details to test this?

If so, please read the private message I have just sent you with information on how to get into contact with us.

You can find your PM inbox here

If not, let me know and we’ll see if we can find somebody with a BT Internet account.

Thanks

Wayne
