Native Opera Mini 5 on Android

I've had a play and instantly made it my default browser in spite of some minor shortcomings. However, the speed and ease of use more than makes up. I highly recommend.

Yeah the previous Opera Mini was JAVA based but native is always the way forward. Hope it continues to improve though as now Android has some great browsers in the Eclair default one, Opera Mini 5 and Dolphin Browser. Also Firefox Mobile is coming pretty soon...

Unfortunately it can't be set as the default browser... still very good though.

Thought it can?

Just did a little test, you're right. Looks like a shortcut will have to do then until it comes out of beta.

Another minor issue is that it's unable to open the full Facebook site, it defaults to the mobile site but it's still forgivable. I can manage with the touch site for now.

This is no doubt an essential app!!! Well done opera, I'm sure updates will iron out the minor issues.

I installed this today and I just can't get over how much faster this is than the default browser. I'm really happy with it. One little question...is there any way to get it to zoom quickly on a page..all I can figure out to do is hit the spanner in the corner, then hit "Find in Page", and then just close up the keyboard...? Am I missing something, or is that it?

single tap on the screen zooms into the page.

This needs better integration into the android OS, it doesn't support multi tasking, I've found that if I switch to another program and come back to opera it completely restarts the browser.

I've been browsing a lot more since installing it :)

Its impressive though as a first beta so I'm sure improvements will be made. Its faster as well because as with all Opera Mini browsers the processing and rendering is all done on their end, rather than the device itself. No multi-touch support though unlike the modified original browser but I'm sure gesture support will come eventually.

@Frostfree..thanks for that. I had a feeling I was being quite dim and missing something, but you would wonder how in hell it didn't occur to me to touch the screen of a touch-screen phone? Bizarre, indeed :D

Yup NeoBlade...impressive, yes :) I tried Dolphin before and just couldn't be getting on with it at all....not one bit of it felt intuitive to me. But this is great..and yea, I've been browsing lots more. It's even bearable over 2g, whereas before usually nothing would load on the default browser.

Cheers :)

Hi danba

Looks like some of the forum guys have already beat me to this one (Thanks guys :D) and you have managed to resolve the zoom feature on the handset.

If there is anything else in the future let us know and we'll be in touch :D

Thanks

Maybe it's just me but I've gotten into the habit of tapping twice to zoom. No biggy though.

Yep, It's actually easier to browse now so I too have been doing it a lot more too.

Yea..if you do a long press on the shortcut, you can clear it or edit it.
If you clear it, then you just press on the plus sign and it brings up a list of recently visited pages that you can use if you wish, or you can type/paste and address into the text field at the top.
Hope that helps :)
