Nexus One - Gmail no longer synching automatically

My Gmail seems to update sporadically -- sometimes it is literally a push e-mail service and yet fairly often (especially in the last five days or so), it requires manual updates. Since last night I've had to manually refresh my account to check for any new messages so it no longer seems as if the push is even working fitfully.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I realise I could add my Gmail account through the stock e-mail application and set it check every 5 or 10 minutes but I'd like push mail feature to actually work!! I've tried searching through a number of forums but haven't yet found a fix.

You could try clearing the cache/data for the GMail app?

Nexus One - Gmail no longer synching automatically

Hi Ak17,

This is a strange one.

Is there any pattern as to when this seems to slow down and stop pushing? For example, does it slow at a certain time or in a certain location?

What level of signal do you have when it fails? If it is frequently low at those times, the service must be unable connect properly.

Do you have any issues with other email accounts or features such as web browsing - do they run slowly or fauil to connect at all?

Has anything changed on the device or the account when this started happening?

I'm sure we can get to the bottom of this.

Hi Dave, thanks for responding. My answers are below.

1. Is there any pattern as to when this seems to slow down and stop pushing? For example, does it slow at a certain time or in a certain location?

So far, there doesn't seem to be a pattern. It's definitely not location-dependent. I did notice that on the 15th the push e-mail stopped working around 3:45 and didn't work again until late morning on the 16th. On the 16th it was definitely working at 4 PM but stopped working sometime before 8.

2. What level of signal do you have when it fails? If it is frequently low at those times, the service must be unable connect properly.

The signal seems to be fine. This occurs on both WiFi and 3G/EDGE.

3. Do you have any issues with other email accounts or features such as web browsing - do they run slowly or fauil to connect at all?

No issues. When I first got the device a few weeks ago, my Exchange account e-mails didn't always appear but this resolved itself after a few days. The Gmail problem, however, has been going on for the last 5 days or so.

4. Has anything changed on the device or the account when this started happening?

I put in a 16GB microSD card but that's the only change. I haven't had any trouble with the card.

Nexus One - Gmail no longer synching automatically

Hi Ak17,

I have a look on the internet and this seems to be a common issue with the phone and if the emails aren't updating automatically there's nothing you can do except manually check your inbox and the emails should come flooding through.

As this is a device issue and nothing to do with the network the best hope of a fix is a future firmware release, as the Nexus isn't branded you will get the Nexus One firmware along with everyone else as opposed to waiting for a Vodafone approved version. We don't know when the next release will be, you are best contacting Google for a specific release date.

Apologies there is nothing more we can do regarding push notifications on the Nexus One.

Thanks

i had this problem for about a week and just discovered how to fix it.

if u scroll to the right from the home screen so you are looking at your second hone screen, there should be a bar at the top with 5 icons - wifi, bluetooth, gps, refresh and brightness - if the refresh icon doesnt have a green light underneath it, this is why its not updating - just press the icon and gmail will start syncing. that simple!

Not the case for me. The sync button has always been on -- it seems to have improved somewhat and is synching e-mail half of the time, although still not at night (somewhere between about 10 PM and 10 AM).
