Problems charging HTC Sensation

Hello,

I've had my HTC Sensation since the day after the release date. Really happy with it so far. However, sometimes it just doesn't seem to charge and loses power while not being used. For example, I used to have a HTC Magic and plugged it in to charge when I went to bed and then when I woke up on the morning it was 100%. Perfect. Can't say the same for the Sensation, I plug it in to charge on a night, as usual (Normally it's about 30-40% after a day of using it moderately), but when I wake up it's at most 50%, normally lower. Sometimes it's at a lower level than when I plugged it in! As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating.

I've gone into the settings and looked at the battery level graph. It looks like it charges to 100% within a couple of hours on the night then, while it's still plugged in to the charger, the power just seems to drop for no reason. Now, either there's a problem here or some other person is in my bedroom playing on Angry Birds all night while I sleep, and I doubt it's the latter.

I found an article somewhere that talked of the charger stopping when the phone is overheated which I thought could be the problem. But surely once the phone has cooled down it would start charging again? And why would it lose power so fast overnight while the display is off? Either way, I made sure that I didn't use the phone for at least an hour before charging so it was nice and cool, yet still came across the same problem. I did a quick search through the forum and couldn't find anyone with the exact same problem as me, is this just a problem with my battery or what?

I'm having to take my charger everywhere with me, I feel like it's a laptop rather than a phone at the moment! Please let me know what's going on.

Thanks,

Paul

First thing to try is a different charger and cable if possible. Make sure that the charger is rated at 1000ma output.

If this does not cure it backup everything you need to and then do a factory reset. Once done try to charge it without installing any apps and see what happens when you try to charge it just to see if its a software problem.

If none of these work and your outside the 7 day cool off it will need to be sent off for repair. I personally think after such a short space of time it should be replaced but thats Vodafones policy atm im afraid.

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

Thanks for the reply cjm1979.

I'm not keen on buying a new charger to see if that's the problem. It's really Vodafone's responsibility to sort that out, but I might try backing it up and try charging it with no apps.

I won't be sending it off for repair, as I'm self employed and I use it for work at the moment, so I can't afford to be without it.

C225, that sounds like my problem. Is your whole phone being replaced? Or just the battery/charger?

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

Have you tried charging from the PC?

If you get the same problem, there isnt anything wrong with the charger, as you'll notice the charger is just a power only USB port.

This may prove the charger but will take alot longer to charge. This is beacuse the usb port on a pc will only charge the phone in usb mode which will be a maximum of 500ma. The reason for this is if not it would blow the ports power supply. The Htc supplied charger as the data connections shorted out inside it and so the phone detects this and charges in Ac mode which will be full ma (about 1000ma).

As it was withing teh first 7 days they just did a complete swap of teh whole phone,  Got mine today and you wont be without a phone as you can still use your old one until the new one gets delivered you just hand parcelforce teh old one and they hand you the new one, put your SIM in and your all set.

My replacement one charges fine now so hopefully thats the end of teh faults for me.

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

I'm having similar problems, though I think it's an issue with the battery gauge.  Although I'm charging overnight, in the morning the gauge reads around 50%.  I use the phone moderately over the course of the day [no angry birds or wi-fi], and when I check the battery level in the evening it's still around 50%.  It's almost as if the gauge is capped and then when the battery level is low enough, it starts registering again.  Hopefully this can be sorted with a software fix.

@emiliovenditti:

I think you're right. This morning I woke up after charging all night and it said the battery was at 8%, I restarted the phone and it said it was 100%.

So it's actually charging properly, it's just the software that's reporting the battery level incorrectly. Glad I don't have to send it back! I can live with restarting it every morning until they send out a fix.

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

I don't really want to try a factory reset as I've set everything up and customised the phone to how I want it. Setting up stuff like Locale can be very time consuming!

Is there any way to save all my apps including their settings to put onto the phone after I do a factory reset?

But at least you would know if you have a faulty phone or its just firmware. I was having crashes on mine from the day i got it. At first i wouldnt notice apart from the icon at the top of the screen telling me it had recovered from a crash and it wanted to send the details to Htc. This got worse and started just staying on the Voda logo and getting really hot until i pulled the battery out. The Gps stopped picking up as well. I decided to do a factory reset and since then not one problem at all.

I know you say its time consuming to set it back up but its better than what your having now. All your apps will download automatically when you sign back in to Google and alot of settings will be as well.

If download something like THIS to backup the apps but im not sure about settings. Some apps have the ability to backup their settings to the sd card

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

I tried a factory reset last night but it's still the same problem, that's without installing all my apps again too, so it can't be a conflict with a certain app.

Sounds like you may have to send it off for repair.

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

My hubbie and I both have Sensations.  My battery is fine but he keeps getting problems with his - on a couple of occasions it's been on charge overnight, but doesn't charge (the orange light remains on).  Today it was showing 85% full after charging all night, so we rebooted, which got it to 99% but then it quickly started dropping even though it was still charging.  And on one ocassion it wouldn't charge at all, but we swapped batteries and everything started working again (I swapped them back again and then his charged ok).

Any ideas?

Should he try a factory reset and see if that helps?

Re: Problems charging HTC Sensation

Just been reading that the latest European firmware does improve charging speed so there might be a fix in the pipeline for you when Vodafone are done testing and adding settings/bloat etc.
