Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

Hello

I saw this thread and had to laugh. I've got an HTC Legend .. so has the wife. After a decade and a half, we don't always get on so well - but the one thing we can agree on is how poor this handset is. Awful battery - sub par signal - slow slow UI. I was going to replace the handset at the earliest opportunity - a bit upset to see that Vodofone moved this date back.

I wouldn't mind if the actual phone experience was good but because of the general laggyness of the UI, even that is poor. Personally, I'm going to ride it out and then take a long look at my next phone.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

My son has a Legend and his battery was clearly suffering. I fitted a spare battery I have for my Desire Z (1500mA) and this seems to have improved things for him. The battery fitted without problem. I got it from the Amazon marketplace for about £5.

Apart from that, the phone is slow and both wifi and 3G signals are noticeably poorer than my Desire Z. He is looking forward to his impending upgrade.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

Despite starting this thread it's nice to see other posters being offered solutions and upgrades, whilst I was told to go to a local shop.  The latest is that, after the shop told me I would charged for the (free?) upgrade I spoke to someone who was arranging a postal return for me.  That was last week and I've heard/received nothing so far...

Hi martyboy,

As there is no email registered to your account, I've been unable to check for any response to the original PM we sent you so I can identify your account.

Because of this, I'm popping you a fresh PM in case you've deleted the original. Just follow the instructions, get us your details and we'll see what happened with the postal return arrangement.

You can find your PM inbox here. If you can't access this link, please ensure that the box next to "Turn on private messages" is ticked on this page, and let us know if you need any further assistance.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

I too have a HTC Legend, which I have hated since soon after I got it 2 yrs ago.  It's the worst phone I have ever owned, the most awkward to use, with the most annoying things wrong with it, and I will never buy another HTC again.  I can't even remember all the things I hate about it, but here are a few; Slow or selective internet where my friends can connect just fine.  The stupefyingly dumb 'predictive' text  is a joke.  No apps at all because the phone refuses to connect to my google account, despite several visits to VF shops and numerous calls to customer services.  No ability to view the contents of my memory card, yet when connected to my laptop a multitude of files are apparent, though their uses are not.  Then there's the things like the Myweb page barging in whenver I connect to the internet, regardless of my homepage setting.  That's really very annoying, almost as much as the crippling internet charges.  I can't wait to get a new phone, that does what its supposed to, and a new contract, that doesn't cost more than my mortgage.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

I have had exactly the same problems with my HTC Legend. Recently been spending more time not using it due to the slowness, the poor reception (consistently saying i have no reception when i usually have reception in that place and need to turn it off and on again to fix it). Text messages always saying failure to send, then when it manages to send the person receives multiple of the same message.

When it gets to the point that your phone is more hassle than good, having to pay for not being able to use it infuriates me. I will not be going back to vodafone when this contract ends (which is in 3 months time- 3 months of hell still to go!!)

Will also never buy another HTC, everyone i know who has one now doesn't due to the poor quality, horrendous battery (spend half the time charging the thing and the other half not being able to use it due to reception issues!)

absolute nightmare of a phone.

Hi guys,

I'm disappointed to hear about the issues you've been having with the handsets.

I do note that neither of you have mentioned trying backing up the handset and restoring factory settings or sending the handset for repair in case there is a repairable fault which is causing the issues you are experiencing. If you have a while to go before you can upgrade, I'd suggest trying these.

If you do want to see if our upgrades team might be able to arrange a new deal for you, then just let us know and we'll see if we can get you talking with them. There's no obligation, but it will help to see what may be available.

alicequay - In your case, can you confirm if the network issue is in one location or anywhere? If it's just in one, can you confirm the postcode for me?

Also, do you still have these issues if you switch off 3G?

Dave

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

There used to be a 50-pager thread on the forum about the problems with this handset; it appears to have gone now.

I myself have had a HTC Legend for 15 months now and it is without doubt the worst phone I've ever had. Shocking battery life, crap signal strength, constant connection drops, random handset reboots, unresponsive UI and more.

I've tried everything to fix this phone's problems.

New sim - no difference.

Restore back to factory settings - no difference.

Phone repair - no difference, behaved exactly the same when returned (providing it was ever actually repaired in the first place).

New battery cover - worked for about a fortnight then reverted to same issues.

Switching signal modes - no difference.

I chanced my arm and requested an early tariff reduction or handset upgrade due to ongoing problems but was dingied by Vodafone's deals dept. due to the length I have left to run and I'm now forced to wait until December (upgrade)/January (expiration) before I can change tariff or phone. And I will be changing... to another network, especially as I can get a free Samsung Galaxy SII on a suitable package with o2 to what I am on currently with my HTC Legend for £10 cheaper than I'm currently payingVodafone - but Vodafone won't match it.

Come January, I'm sure there will be even better deals to be had with rival networks and I will be switching away! And once my second contract for my wife's phone expires in 2013, I'll be moving that as well. That'll be at least £60 out of Vodafone's coffers that I'll be taking elsewhere as they can't be arsed to compete.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

Hi,

I must be one of the lucky ones, well i thought i was.Have the usual problems like signal coverage & wifi droping like most & for the last few months i keep getting the force closed messege popping up maybe once/twice a week.It locks the phone up totally so i have to resort to taking the battery out & starting again.

Wifes got a wildfire & side by side she has full bar coverage, whereas mine only has 1 bar? also she never lose's wifi coverage, its almost like the wifi on the legend goes to sleep after a while of not being used.

Also stated to drop call more often, not all the time though

Orignaly i wanted the desire when i upgraded but it was sold out & was offered this instead, hasnt been a bad phone but i cant wait till i can upgrade again in August.Hopefully Vodafone will look after me as im a long standing customer from Singlepoint days (doubt anyone can remember them :smileyhappy:)

Just for some balance here...

I have never had a problem with my Legend and I had pre-ordered it as soon as it was announced. It has been rocksolid for me since day one.

The signal has been no better or worse than other handsets I have owned (I am near Birmingham, for what it is worth), and the wifi has never given me any grief.

The battery was fine once it was bedded down properly with a couple of charge/discharges. Can't understand all the hate this handset gets around here to be honest.

As far as lag, has everyone toggled the debug option after the 2.2 upgrade? Other than that, maybe its an sd card issue? I really have no issues to be fair and I am wondering if the reports of force closes etc are more down to certain apps being incompatible with each other rather than the phone (I once had an old computer emulator installed on my Legend which caused all sorts of problems). A backup/factory reset may help?

The default Android/HTC Facebook app has allways been rubbish, use Friendcaster instead, it is a far better solution.

In the hand this is one of the best phones I have ever used and the design and build quality is sublime. I got hold of  a One S as an upgrade but at the moment I dont want to swap over. Its been a fine, fine phone and the best handset I have used in all my time with Vodafone.

I like the HTC Legend but know it has its limitations. While this will void your warrenty the best thing I ever did was root my phone. I used the offical HTC root option (this is from HTC directly) and then installed a custom rom. I accept this is all quite technical and beyond a lot of people. However I found everything I needed at XDA and used a more or less stock rom (BlaY0), just bloatware removed. I've enabled A2SD so have 4gb space for apps, I have a CPU profiler app (120-804mhz) so performance is much better and battery life is epic. I can get 4 days easily now depending on use, I'd barely get a day before. I've had this setup for a while and its fine, very stable  as others on XDA 250+ page thread can confirm.

VF will not approve these actions even if from HTC, it does void your warranty etc etc. However it does prove the phone can be pretty good with the right softwareware.

Another tip which doesn't void your warranty, buy a fast SD card like a Sandisk Mobile Ultra 16gb (8 and 4gb available). This improves the phones performance, not massively but it all helps. A slow SD card will slow down the phone which is why a lot of new phones no longer give the option to add a microSD card.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

I've looked into this rooting malarkey and even visited the xda website which for a few moments I was convinced wasn't even in English.  Essentially it's a collection of acronyms and numbers that mean absolutely nothing to me posted by people who really should get out more.  If you buy a phone and pay for it it should just work.  I don't want to start fiddling around changing the software.  But thanks anyway NX3.

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

Bit late to the party I know, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting their HTC Legends repaired? Mine is also just another terrible phone! Apart from the ubiquitous problems of poor reception, cripplingly slow speeds and short battery life, it seems to be developing a few new problems too! It's new fun features are to drop the call I'm making and start dialling someone else, pressing the menu button turns the ringer volume down, and the front lights never turn off. Counting down the days to ditch this thing, and Vodafone too for supplying it!

Re: The HTC Legend's All-Round General Rubbishness

Hi Smilo

Thanks for your post. I can appreciate that if you're experiencing various difficulties with your phone it would be frustrating. If you're still in contract then you'll be able to arrange a repair under warranty for your device. This can be arranged either in store or via postal repair and you can find more information on our repairs procedure here - Repair a faulty handset or device.

Thanks

Simon
