Hi Lee, thanks for this response, as it rules out one of Vodafone's options in this thread here:
http://forum.vodafon...lity-liability/
As such this must mean Vodafone is following the path of one of the other options- either issuing an update imminently, or accepting liability for costs incurred by a vulnerability. As you've now confirmed they wont be extending warranties and support for unofficial updates which would solve the issue in the above thread, can you now please confirm which of the remaining options it is as in the meantime it is not safe to use our handsets and so we likely have legitimate cause to claim back contract costs for the period our handsets are not safe to use due to the inherent security issues that exist in them which Vodafone has so far avoided issuing the fixes for. You have been aware of the issue for nearly two weeks, so the clock is ticking on the amount of money we will almost certainly be able to reclaim via the small claims court.
I'm sure Vodafone would like the problem to go away but it wont, Vodafone is clearly going to have to spend money some way and the most obvious solution in terms of customer satisfaction would be simply issuing the update. The more Vodafone stalls on this, the more it is costing them both in terms of lost user satisfaction, and in terms of potential penalty costs for not allowing our handsets to be safe to use.
Hi Xefan,
I've raised your points to the management team and we will investigate.
Once I have any more information, we'll post back here.
Cheers,
LeeH

Updating to a none approved firmware may invalidate your warranty, and we can't offer any support if anything goes wrong.
Thanks for clearing nothing up. Only Vodafone can say if a none approved firmware WILL invalidate the warranty. Unfortunately, for us stupid revenue streams, Vodafone can't say anything more certain than MAY. Could you perhaps give us some clue as to what support we would lose anyway given that this forum seems pretty useless apart from the user-generated content.

Surely an HTC official update would not invalidate the warranty. This matter is ridiculous. Nobody within Vodafone can make any decisions or pass on any information. It is utterly ridiculous.

It is indeed ridiculous. If only we were a Formula 1 team or a tax dodge, or some other Vodafone core operation.

For the record I can confirm that this update works a treat, and boy does it make a difference to your handset!!
Being a total noob to flashing Android ROMS it was a pretty long and steep learning curve however so please dont start down the road unless you have the time and patience to see it through.
Android 2.2.1 is a world apart from the bloated v1.6 Vodafone version, it's like getting a new phone, looks amazing and runs so much better. Market place is fast and works perfectly as do all the apps.
Well worth the effort, even if it did take me all weekend to do :-)
Now I can enjoy the Magic whilst I wait for the last few months of my contract to run out - then it's off to another network.
cheers all!!

After lengthy discussions with various members of Vodafone's support staff I have finally got the news you've all been waiting for. Android 2.2.1 will be available via download from Vodafone's site before the end of the year. There will be different downloads for different devices but It's Android 2.2.1 for alot of phones (Including the HTC Magic). He also said there would be an OTA update but Vodafone wanted to give users the option of updating their devices themselves If they wished. Finding this information out was not easy, I had spoken to a couple of support staff members who either didn't know what they were talking about or confused the HTC Magic from Vodafone with the unbranded HTC Magic with the different 32A board. I finally got to speak to someone who knew all about the HTC Magic and the ever elusive Android 2.2.1 update. Not wanting to miss out on this opportunity of finally speaking to a knowledgeable person, I asked what the delay had been. This Is what he said verbatim, "There have been delays with this update due to a disagreement that Vodafone, HTC and Google had regarding updating this device." I tried to probe further about exactly what the disagreement had been but I got the impression he was not allowed to say. So there you have It folks, official confirmation that this update will be coming to your device before the end of this year. Merry Christmas everyone, I hope this will finally put an end to this whole debate.

For those who still haven't got it, here are the links for the OTA 2.2 ROM. You must be on the Stock VF 1.6 firmware before applying these files...
NOTE: For those running AmonRA/Clockwork Recovery simply flash file number 1, then file 2 in Recovery.
NOTE 2: For STOCK users who have not rooted or replaced their Recovery, follow the steps below...
Download and copy the first file to your SDCard. Rename the first file as update.zip, then unmount the SDCard. Turn off your phone. Hold the HOME button and press Power to enter Recovery. It should look for the update.zip file. Press Action to "Apply the update".
Once done, do the exact same procedure for file 2.
Reboot and you should be fully updated ^_^

Those files are there though to help those who haven't got the OTA or simply want them so they can do a restore if anything goes wrong. I would advise downloading them and keeping them safe as I don't know now long they will stay on Google's servers...
