WAP use at midnight

[ Edited ]

For the past few months my phone bill, which is £15 normally, has been £20 or so. I decided to check my bill to see that I was being charged for using the internet, which I don't understand because I have turned off the data roaming and mobile internet and I only use my houses wireless internet. I have a HTC Wildfire btw if that helps.

EDIT: Just checked my bill more closely and at midnight on a few days I have been charged for WAP, 83p reagardless of how much usage there is. I have no idea what it is and I am certainly not using my phone at these times for anything other than texting. I have seen other posts on here for the same and thing

Is it Voda branded? My sister in law as been having the same thing with her phone and i think it is one the Voda apps and no matter what she tried it kept enabling the data and doing it. I told her to select a different operators apn settings to stop it. Is the mobile internet definately turned off? You will have no letter next to the signal if it is off, ie: G, E, 3G or H.

If you don't want to use the internet, ask customer services to apply a GPRS bar to your account then it will stop, it will not affect your wifi use

Re: WAP use at midnight

The mobile internet is definitely off, plus it happened midnight on the 17th Jan and I got my phone 16th Jan. I have gone through every single part of my phone to see what is on that could be using internet and have turned it off. It doesn't have the vodafone name on it. It's annoying though, cos although it doesn't sound like much, they have taken £6 of my money that they have no right to have, as a student i need all the money I can to keep me going over the summer, I don't need this.

Re: WAP use at midnight

Cheers, I'm still not impressed. I have just rung Vodafone and been told that it is necessary software updates that the phone does by itself and as it is the phone and not to do with Vodafone it is out of their control. He then said there were 2 options, I could either bar the internet or I could have 500mb usage for £5 month. How very generous of them. I have been charged for something that is out of my control and have now had to bar the internet on my phone. Vodafone will be losing this customer once my contract is finished. This is not the first problem I have had with them. My mum was mis-sold a contract after being repeatedly told that she could cancel it whenever at no charge and that it was a rolling contract. When I rang them to cancel it I was told that it was a 12 month contract and that the call centre was not part of Vodafone so they couldn't do anything about it.

Your service is appalling Vodafone.

Re: WAP use at midnight

Without adding to your troubles, it would have almost certainly happened on any other network (not a justification of Vodafone) the biggest issue I would say is for someone to now sell you a phone with a plan which does not include data without explaining how many phones have apps and other "stuff" which will try to access data.

For your mum, there are 30 day deals out there and also 12 month ones, potentially this could have been solved having the call listened into.

Was it sold by a 3rd party dealer to your mum, if so then the issue would lay back with the dealer that processed the sale

good luck anyway

Re: WAP use at midnight

I know, just it annoys me that they justify it by saying that it's the phones fault not theirs. Of course it's their fault, they sold it to me without telling me about it and now they have my money.

It was sold to her in a Vodafone shop and my mum kept asking if it was an actual contract or one that she could cancel whenever and she was told repeatedly that as long as she gave a months notice it could be cancelled without any charges. Cheers for the help, shows that Vodafone doesn't try to help its customers much.

If you have been misadvised by a store, then best place is to pop back in and discuss it and I am sure they can look into it and get it sorted for you.

Re: WAP use at midnight

I'm not sure why your phones are connecting to mobile internet when all features are turned off, but I know that some Apps have the ability to turn phone features on and off as part of their permissions.

So it may be that an App is bypassing the manual settings to update itself and then returning the phone to it's manual state?

As an experiment it might be worth Factory Resetting the phone, but don't install any Apps. Then run the phone for a few days and check for internet usage.

It might also be worth putting the phone into Airplane mode when you go to bed. Your Alarm function will still work.
