Hi
If you cannot find them in your phone memory or SD Card and you have not made a back up anywhere else ( I use DropBox) then I'd suggest speaking to HTC Uk Support to see if they can help.

bandofbrothers1 is right, it's probably only HTC who can help, though I'm doubtful even they can find lost files if recovery programs have failed. You'll need not to use the phone until it's been investigated as every new piece of data written to memory is likely to over-write something and lessen the chances of a successful outcome.
It's a hard lesson, but I'll repeat Schofield's law: data doesn't exist at all unless it exists in at least 3 places. I also use Dropbox for more or less immediate cloud backup and I've set my camera to save to the sd card so that, if the phone locks and has to be reset, at least I can get the card safely out before doing that.
If you're moving important stuff, do it the laborious way: copy, then go back and delete the originals only once you're happy the new location is fully accessible.

I use Google Photos. It backs up photos automatically when the phone is connected to a power source and is on Wi Fi. I use it still on my iPhone - works just as well as on my previous Android devices.
OneDrive can do the same thing.

If you're really paranoid, you can set two cloud services to sync your photos. If you want to save on mobile data use, you can restrict it to wifi only. On an Android device, Google requires the Google Photos app, but it does at least store them in a Drive folder now, rather than burying them in Google+.

There are specialist data recovery firms, some of which may operate on a no-find/no-fee basis, but they charge by the complexity of the task, so make sure you get a quote. Also make sure you don't use the device until it's been looked at to give them the best chance.
