E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install

Hi,

My E870 Expresscard was working but stopped working.  I couldn't get it working so I uninstalled VMClite and tried reinstalling but now the modem driver won't install.

My laptop is running Win7-64bit.

The expresscard installs correctly and works fine on at least two other Win7-64bit laptops but won't install correctly on this laptop.

When I loaded the Expresscard from clean I got an error saying that the modem driver failed.  Then when it launched VMCLite it wouldn't make a connection.  When I looked at the modem in device manager it shows that the modem was not loaded correctly.

Now the situation is that when I plug the Expresscard in it starts up the USB mass storage device correctly and shows the drive in "My Computer" however it fails to autorun the VMCLite launch software.  If I manually launch the autorun file it starts up VMCLite but it again fails to recognise the modem.

So how do I fix this to get the modem driver installed correctly so it will work ?

Here are all the relevant screenshots showing the problem.

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install

Hi malarkey,

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this - you've given some quite in-depth details here.

First things first, the fact that the card works without issue on two other laptops certainly suggests that the issue does not lie there, so we need to find out what has happened on the laptop to affect it.

First of all, did you change anything on the laptop at the time, such as a new installation, an uninstall or an update, for example firewall or anti-virus? If you did, it may be that that change is responsible for the initial issue. I know, for example, that online gamers have been affected after months without issue by small changes to their firewall program, so something may have inadvertently happened here as well.

Next, how did you run the uninstall? If the device is "already installed" when you try to re-install, then this suggests that this did not fully uninstall. Does the modem still show up under any of "CD Rom drives" (as USB mass storage device"), "modems", "Ports (COM + LPT)" or "USB Controllers" in Device Manager? If so, you want to remove those records manually before reinstalling. Also, when uninstalling, be sure to remove any Vodafone connection from the "Manage Network Connections" screen.

Finally, when you come to install, you may want to check you have the latest software version installed, so click here to ensure the latest has been downloaded.

Let us know how you get on!

Dave

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this - you've given some quite in-depth details here.

Well I used to work in tech support many years ago and have worked on PCs for 20 years so you'll probably find I've already been through all the obvious steps and all the advice available online (via google).  One thing I can't understand is why I can't find a E870 modem driver online...even on the Huawei web site ?

I was wondering whether it was an issue with it being 64bit but that doesn't explain why its working fine on the other Win7-64bit laptops.

Anyway to your points...

First of all, did you change anything on the laptop at the time

Well this is tricky... the card was working on this laptop when I had Vista-32 installed.  Just over a month ago I wiped it and did a brand new clean install of WIn7-64bit (so my desktop and all three of my laptops were all on Win7-64bit).  I installed the card/VMCLite on this laptop after the OS install and IT WAS WORKING FINE.

Then I didn't use it on this laptop for nearly a month.  When I came to use it again it had stopped working... it wouldn't launch the connection.

In the meantime there probably had been updates to Windows, updates to AV/Firewall software etc but over the course of a month I couldn't pin point which, if any of those, might have triggered the modem to stop working.  All I know is that it was working but stopped working and now it won't reinstall properly.

Iny any case I have the same OS and same Kaspersky installed on all three of my laptops, if it was a problem caused by those then I would expect the modem to stop working on the other laptops (they've had the same updates) and they are working fine.

I had a look thorugh windows restore points and tried restoring to an earlier point.... regardless of which restore point I used the card wouldn't work, I didn't have the restore points to go back far enough to a restore point at which point it worked.

Next, how did you run the uninstall?

I ran the VMCLite uninstaller in Programs and Features.

If the device is "already installed" when you try to re-install, then this suggests that this did not fully uninstall.

Exactly... I think that's the case.  The uninstall didn't uninstall it properly.

So I went down the route you suggested and manually looked for what the uninstall had left behind.... I removed all the huwawei, vodaphone, vmclite items I could find, including the huawei mass storage device, etc...

I had then what I beleived to be a system ready for a totally clean install of VMCLite.... I have stored this as a clearn system restore point...

This clean point has no CD ROM drive, no modem, no ports, no usb controllers, etc...   From this clean point, when I plug in the card it installs (correctly) the mass storage device and it shows up as a CDROM (as shown in the screenshots), it then tries to load the modem drivers and the driver fails to load (as shown in the screenshot). and because there is no modem it won't connect.

When I plug in the card for a second time the huawei mass storage device etc show up in the device manager and the card shows up as a CDROM drive but it fails to autolaunch.  If I manually launch the VMCLite application from the CDROM drive (by manually running the autorun) then it launches but won't connect because there's no driver.

Finally, when you come to install, you may want to check you have the latest software version installed, so click here to ensure the latest has been downloaded.

That's not the latest VMCLite... .it is the full mobile connect software... will that make a difference ?  Can I use that in combination with the expresscard that has the VMCLite software included ?  Does that have a driver install that the VMCLite doesn't ?  But again that doesn't explain why the install on the other laptops worked fine and the card works fine on those machines.

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install

Hi malarkey,

Thanks for your reply, I agree that it's really strange that the express card has stopped working all of a sudden. As a first step, I'd definitely recommend installing the full version of VMC as suggested by Dave. It doesn't matter whether you're using VMC Lite or not, so it could resolve your issue.

Give that a go and let me know how you get on :smileyhappy:.

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install

Tried the recommendations but with no success...

Basically it is the modem driver not installing... I've had a look more deeply and it is saying it is not installed correctly (code 31)...

If I uninstall it (in device manager or by deleting it in Mobile connect software) it still fails to reinstall...

Whichever way I try to install the modem it just says it failed to install with code 31.

This is very frustrating, especially when I know it used to work on this laptop and still does on at least two other WIn7-64 laptops that I have.  Right now its not much use to me like this.

What does code 31 mean and how can I fix the modem driver installation ?  Is there a manual process for installing it and have you got hte correct Win7-64 driver ?  Surely its possible to install it manually somehow ?

Hi marlarkey,

The Code 31 error is a windows error that occurs when installing device drivers. You can find a more information along with some troubleshooting steps here. Please let us know if this helps resolve the issue.

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install - now got error code 628

Thanks Woody....I have got the driver installed now (I ended up doing a Windows Repair) with the latest VMB software but the modem now won't make a connection...

I get a RAS error code 628... mobile connection not possible.

I've followed the advice in the error message text (eg deleting the device and reinstalling it) and it still won't make a connection.

So what's going on now ?  What solutions are there for RAS error 628 ?

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install - now got error code 628

Actually I've now solved this too...

I bounced around this forum for RAS code 628 and found the solution...   it was set up for prepay and I have contract.

Thanks for your help.

Re: E870 Expresscard modem driver didn't install - now got error code 628

628 seems very common but is not in the troubleshooting section.

Maybe JD could add 628 to the troubleshooting sticky, something like "if you get error 628 following new installation of VMC software you should check the account type is set up correctly i.e. Contract or PrePay"

Advanced users can check the APN in VMC Network Settings is as follows

Vodafone Monthly Contract Dongle APN = INTERNET

Vodafone Pre-Pay Dongle APN = PPBUNDLE.INTERNET

(Obsolete non-expiring PAYG APN = PP.INTERNET)
