I have been a loyal long term vodaphone customer, phones, plus UK dongles. Bought another dongle last week. Not good at all.

K3806-Z USB Dongle on Dell Inspiron 1525 with Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN mini-card. Vista Home Basic SP2, up to date. Only one user profile (admin).

I installed the software: VMB Lite version 10.1.1.26030 ZTE
It worked once, I received 3 SMS’s, then failed to connect next time.
RAS Error 668 (connection dropped)
SMS works (404 “Traffico”)
Strong signal (4/5 bars).Finds both HSPA (blue led) and GPRS (green LED).

In VMB Advanced, I Deleted, then Added the stick in the device window, per text of RAS668 error message. It’s enabled. Followed all the points, repeatedly.

Checked for upgrades (none) from App menu.
Checked Vodaphone website, read forums.
Uninstalled, cleared modem, CD/rom drive, USB ports, device drivers, network connection & controller (which I removed). All references to Huawei and Vodaphone removed, as clean as I could make laptop. Tested with wifi on and off.

Uninstalled from Program Manager.
Changed com ports to high values.
Deleted Roaming/Vodaphone folder.
Reboot etc.

Gone round the loop at least 15 times.

Installed Vodaphone Mobile Broadband V10.1.108.29105RP156
Same error.

Have also tried V 10.2.302.33178-RC1
Same error.

Also installed on fresh Toshiba laptop, Windows 7. Didn’t even work once. Also XP SP3 desktop. same error.

My conclusion is that data written is back to USB stick which causes failure of subsequent installs, restarts - shouldn't do this, as cannot go back to repeatable initial condition, out of the box defaults. This is bad software design.

In despair now. I travel a lot and use this for work. Essential, please help.

Hello sailor

Are you using Vodafone UK SIM card?Is it contract or PAYG? The Mobile Broadband dongle (K3806-Z) is not available in the UK, so I suspect that if you're using Vodafone UK SIM in non UK ranged device the connection settings (APN) will be wrong.

Can you confirm where did you bought the dongle? Make sure that all the connectivity applications supplied by Laptop manufacturers is closed whilst using VMB software e.g.. Acer Connection Manager, Think Vintage Access Connection. Make sure that WWAN Autoconfig service is started where applicable (you can access Services by typing services or services.msc in Run command)

Yes, it’s actually an Italian Vodaphone dongle, I’m working in Sicily at the moment. I also have UK, Malta and Portugal dongles – all Vodaphone, bought in the local country, to minimise any problems…. I had some minor set-up problems I sorted myself, never had to post on a forum. Used Cosmote in Greece this year as couldn’t get a Voda dongle. So, I’m not a complete dongle virgin

This dongle is a fixed life prepay. Tried the sim in my other dongles. Same problem, but maybe I was being too hopeful ;-)

I’m using the same laptop, all connectivity off.

App doesn’t allow access to Contract type, tho I tried amending the mobilebroadbandprofile.xml to Prepay, though maybe used wrong text; app rewrites the file anyway, and presumably backs up in the .mdb on the stick. Do you know what the Voda text should be? Prepaid or Prepay?

I also guess that there is some sort of check on the file to prevent people changing things they shouldn’t, so .xml edit will not work anyway.

My UK HTC Voda mobile is fine here; other people I have met use Voda dongles without any problems (tho we haven’t compared dongle specs…).

BTW when I install, I select the Italian contract country, tho I assume there is only one version of the software.

I noticed that the Autoplay folder has a reference to another of my V phones (C902), but I can’t find any reference to it in Device Manager.

Here’s hoping you can figure this one.

I am sorry you are having difficulties with your device, however unfortunately as this is not a product we supply we have very limited information we can provide and would recommend contacting the provider that you did obtain it from.

You can contact Vodafone Italy through the website http://www.vodafone.it/engl/

The closest device I can see that we stock is the k3805z and you can see information such as our APN settings on our Help Centre.
