Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) - I'm Getting A RAS 718 Error With My Windows 7 Laptop

Hi,

I have a laptop running Windows 7 with an integral SIM slot (sony z series).

I have a valid 'contract' VF mobile broadband acount.

However,

VF connect 9x has installed fine on the Win 7 laptop but will not connect, it says 'connecting' then after a while it dsplays an errror Ras 718.

However, native Windows 7 displays the Mobile VF Broadband & if I click connect - its connects fine & works fine.

If I load the VF Connect s/w; the VF medsage window appears saying 'connecting' (and it has connected because I can surf the web) but when the VF s/w (after a few minutes fails with Ras error 718, the connection drops)

Can you advise how I might resolve this - so the VF Connection s/w works?
(Ps, I have checked the modem is 'active' & default ticked in VF connection tab, also VF s/w shows available networks etc but just will not connect)

Thanks,
T

Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) - I'm Getting A RAS 718 Error With My Windows 7 Laptop

hi Trevor

Please can you confirm which version of the Vodafone Connection software you're using, i.e VMC 9.4.6 or earlier?

It may be worth totally removing the current install and downloading the latest version from the Vodafone business site, then let us know if there has been any significant improvement.

Hi Reidar,

I confirm I am running the latest version - I have removed & re-installed and exact same problem appears.

I can connect to Mobile Broadband through native Windows 7 - works fine

I cannot connect via VF Connect s/w, it fails with a Ras error.

I would like to use the VF Connect s/w to monitor my usage - so, if you can suggest a fix - that would be appeciated ?

Cheers,

Trevor.

Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) - I'm Getting A RAS 718 Error With My Windows 7 Laptop

Hi Trevor,

I must say this has thrown me a little but I have come up with one possible solution as other VMC users using Windows 7 have come across the same thing.

Could you please ensure that there is no Bluetooth Modem present in the Modems tab by:
  • Clicking Start
  • Control Panel
  • Hardware and Sound
  • Phone and Modems tab
  • Modems tab
  • Disable/Remove any Bluetooth modems that may be present. If there was a modem listed, once you have this disabled could you please try to reconnect via the VMC.

Trevor, please get back to us if there are no other modems present in the list and we will look further in to this for you.

Just in case there are other users affected by the same issue, can you please ensure you have the latest version of the VMC installed which is v9.4.6.

    Thanks

    Andrew

  • Hello Andrew,

    Many Thanks for your assistance,

I can confirm there is no bluetooth modem setup.

I am running the latest 9.4.6 VF connect s/w.

I have disabled both Bluetooth & WIFI but still VF connect will not work.

What I feel might be happening is that Windows 7 is 'hogging' control of the connection (modem) as when conneting via (native) Windows 7, I can connect and all works fine.
When I attempt to connect via VF 9.4.6, it says 'connecting' - windows (native) then shows the icon confirming connection, but VF keeps saying 'connecting' then a few minutes later, connection drops with VF returning a Ras 718 error.

I have tried changing the COM port & re-installing VF connect to no avail.

Can yoy please provide any further assitance ?

    Cheers,

    T

    Hi,

I am no nearer resolving this & await your further advice ?

    I completley reinstalled VF 9.4.6
I chacked firmware of internal 3G modem, Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Modem 9225 (found its the latest)
I removed the Win7 WWAN auto config Service
    I tried 'compatibility mode'

What I did notice is the VF s/w seems to create a separate 'Vodafone connection' entry in the dial-up network list, if I look at this, although it has the correct modem, the dial-number says PPP & clicking connect manually (not via VF Connect' returns a fail to connect message.

However, Window 7 nativley creates it own 'Voda UK' connection & clicking on this still work fine.

Any ideas how to work this using VF connect?

    Thanks,

    T

Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) - I'm Getting A RAS 718 Error With My Windows 7 Laptop

    Hi clever_trevor

A device specialist has looked over the logs, it's apparent that windows is trying to get control of the device as the embedded module is using NDIS 6.2 drivers which our software doesn't fully integrate with yet. I have checked over the latest VMC release notes, and there is no mention of NDIS 6.2 driver support for Sony's implementation of the GOBI 2000 module. The only one the software fully supports with NDIS 6.2 in this mode is Dell's 5530/F3507.

The problem will still remain as to whether the software will fully support Sony's version of the module as from what I've seen it is down to the manufacturer as to what firmware and drivers the GOBI uses and hence whether VMC can support it.

Support for this may be added in a later version of VMC, but it would seem apparent that this is the method Sony have intended for their users to connect.

It may be worth you keeping an eye out on the Vodafone Business site for updates, and use the microsoft connection in the mean time.

    Hope this helps clarify matters.

    Regards

    Hi,

    Many Thanks for the confirmation.

I had verbal assurance from Sony that it works fine - but I see now they were wrong.

I will hope that VF will provide an update soon that will support my setup.

Meanwhile, the 'native' connection via Win7 does seem to work fine but is missing optimisation & details of usage.

Again, much appeciated you speedy reponses,

    Cheers,
