WIFI unit used all data overnight

I went and bought a wifi unit from tesco yesterday, i waited until midnight to setup and turn on just so i could test it from 1st of month, all seemed fine, it connected to a single device for safety and i charged it up.

I get up next morning to find that all 2GB of included data has been used somehow. Neat trick, its been in my bag and the ONLY device i had connected to it was switched off.

Anyone have any idea how a unit could use data with NOTHING connected to it.

Note i changed its default passwords and SSID also using a 12 character string so its couldnt be accessed by anyone else. The single device wifi is dissabled between 1230 and 7am

Is this a magical event so you can get more money off me! this thing gets binned if there is no reasonable explanation as this is a joke!

Thanks for your post. 

What device was it connected to? How was it switched off, at the main power supply, or is it in a stand by mode? 

If the device was on stand by, it may have been updating throughout the night.
