N900 - PR1.2 Speculation

Maemo and Nokia sites have (yet again) saying that the PR1.2 firmware update is here this week - Wednesday! I don't suppose Vodafone will know when they are releasing? If they don't release it in a timely manner can I cancel my contract as having a phone not fit for purpose?

Come on Vodafone for once meet the same global release dates!

I wait with baited breath for you standard responce.

N900 - PR1.2 Speculation

Hi darren379

As we don’t currently have news on a software release date for this handset we’re unable to provide further responses to this thread at the present time.

Please see the below for frequently asked questions on software updates:

How can I check for available software updates on my phone?
How do I get a software update if my phone isn’t listed online?
Can Vodafone give me a specific date for a software release?
What happens if I update my software to a non-official version of software
Why do Vodafone have their own version of software for phones?

N900 - PR1.2 Speculation

Shame none of those links are relevant.

But to be honest. There's no reason for Vodafone to withhold the firmware updates for the N900, none whatsoever. If Nokia have said PR1.2 will be out this Wednesday then there's absolutely no reason why Vodafone can't release it at the same time.

There is no compatibility with networks and firmware issues where the N900 is concerned, as has been suggested by Voafone on this very forum. The evidence for that is out there in the shape of Nokia N900s that have a 203 code that are quite happily bobbing along on Vodafone with V1.1.1 of the firmware. And Vodafone are worried that V1.1.1 is compatible with the Vodafone network?

The second point being that none of the Vodafone software, Music Store, Vodafone Live, Vodafone 360, Vodafone Widgets etc is compatible with the N900.

N900 - PR1.2 Speculation

Can a mod confirm that they understand that although called firmware updates, these are actually operating system updates and Vodafone customers are losing out by not having these especialy as 1.2 will bring the new Qt programming language. If we dont get it our phones will be severely out of date. I for one am seriously debating if I will ever take another vodafone contract based on this. This all needs fed back to someone! Come on mods stop hiding behind your stock answers and work on our behalf to push this issue forward.

N900 - PR1.2 Speculation

A "PR1.2 Speculation" thread? Really? Nice. :D

Face facts guys, someone at Vodafone decided they would like a UK Vodafone variant firmware back when the N900 was first shipped. This was despite being the only country and operator combination to have its own unique variant and that variant having absolutely no genuine distinguishing features.

Nokia, meanwhile, have abandoned the policy of "release early, release often" that you would have expected to work well on a device with a large open-source underpinning and community-led application development.

Instead of releasing the various fixes for the dozens of bugs that were identified as "fixed" on Maemo Bugzilla 3 months ago, Nokia decided to bundle everything together, along with an upgraded feature list, into one huge update of such complexity that they can't get it to run smoothly. That's probably because most of their developers have moved on to other projects - possibly making sure Adobe Flash 10.x works with MeeGo.

It may be massively late but PR1.2 will be here someday. Who knows when? Possibly Vodafone but they can't say anything, understandably. When it comes, Vodafone will add their little tweaks to make it into an upgrade for our variant of the firmware too. ;)

It won't be released at the same time as the global version though... why would it be? Having created a new variant, Vodafone have a duty to make sure firmware upgrades are tested and stable and I'm sure they'll do so. They can take their time and get it right, secure in the knowledge that there won't be another one coming along anytime soon.

I don't know why i'm bothering but here's a release update which includes what is being updated TODAY!

Perhaps someone at Vodafone can now explain why we will not get such a big update on time!

I wait again for the standard answer.

N900 - PR1.2 Speculation

I stick by what I say with regards to Vodafone firmware updates. You only need to compare a Vodafone handset to a generic vanilla handset to see what the delays are about.

We all had the same problems with regards to the N95-8GB. Everyone with a Vodafone branded handset were stuck on V20.0.016. Mine was resetting itself at least twice a day and it would always reset in mid call. Vodafone had no intentions on releasing another firmware update, because the handset was no longer being sold by them. I had about 16 months of a contract to go.
After a flurry of visits to Trading Standards by customers and countless members posting paragraphs from legal sources and counter posts from Vodafone stating "No comment, visit our firmware ploicy link here: xxxxxxxxxxxx". It was revealed to us that the 20.0.016 firmware had a serious security issue which needed patching. When they were presented with this and it was confirmed by Nokia V31.0.015 magically appeared on the NSU. That's the last update Vodafone have ever released for the N95 series. V35.0.001 is now sitting on the servers awaiting download.

People are walking around with V30.2010 on 203 variant N900s on Vodafone contracts and having no stability issues whatsoever. When Nokia start shipping the PR1.2 handsets you can walk into a Nokia store and get one on a Vodafone contract, and enjoy all the features of the handset as Nokia intended and laugh at the Vodafone customers who are still stuck on 20.2009 getting angry because all the apps in the repositories are not installing because of missing dependencies. The same will happen when the N900 variant of MeeGo hits the servers. 203's will be running it while 205's are possibly still stuck on 20.2009, still waiting for V1.1.1.

While we are on the subject. PR1.2 confirmed for this week (With the UK release first on the list, unless you're on Vodafone).

I'll have to clear some of the junk I downloaded from the repositories before I'll even attempt it. It's a big download at almost 114Meg. :P

Mine is on Vodafone but it's the UK '203' version not the UK Vodafone '205' version.

If you got your handset from an independent source, i.e Carphone Warehouse, Mobile Phones Direct or from the Nokia store, then you will be free to update to PR1.2. If on the other hand you got your handset from Vodafone Online or from the Vodafone shop, then you won't be able to update until Vodafone say you can.

203 handsets are generic handsets i.e available from CPW, Mobile Phones Direct and the Nokia store.

205 handsets are only available through Vodafone and your firmware is locked, unless you update via Nokia's Maemo Flasher.

However, if you managed to purchase a 203 handset direct from Vodafone, then this issue needs to be addressed by Vodafone.

This is the irony, they say they need to test the new firmware to check it's ok on their network, but some handsets that are sold on their network are getting it now (discounting those who voided their VF warranty by flashing up to the Nokia-site version). So they even seem to be contradicting one of their own reasons for VFising the update and refusing to let us have the Nokia version and still keep warranty.
