Nokia E71 Crashing/hanging Problem

I've had my Nokia E71 for 6 weeks now & I've encountered no problems whatsoever. Until now. For some reason the phone keeps locking up on random applications. It could be anything from checking my Mail (Exchange) or checking my SMS messages, to surfing on Opera Mini. I can get back to the main menu screen, by attempting to switch the phone off, then pressing the End call button. To get things back to normal, I have to turn the phone off, then on again.

I can't seem to pinpoint where these crashes/hanging errors come from & feel it may be something I have installed. Over the last week I have installed Opera Mini 4.2, Nokia Communication, Google toolbar & Mail For Exchange. I have also had an update for the Ovi Store & Google Maps.

Nokia E71 Crashing/hanging Problem

Hi Video.
First off, make sure you're running the latest firmware. Very few handsets are up to date out of the box.
I'd treat a problem like this the same way as I'd treat a similar thing on my PC, by uninstalling all the apps that you have listed one at a time, then run the phone for a while to see if the problem re-occurs. If it doesn't hang then it was the last app that you uninstalled.
If it still hangs after all the listed apps have been uninstalled, then backup all your contacts, images and other important data and do a reset, you may also have to format the memory card. Then re-install each app in turn, again running the phone for a while to see how it behaves.

Also where have you installed the apps to, phone memory or memory card? Over time I've come to learn that, although there's nothing in the install instructions, and you still get the install path choice, a lot of apps need to be installed to phone memory if they need system files to run.

Hope the above method helps.

Thanks for your detailed reply. I installed all the apps on my Phone's memory. I've now deleted all the apps, I've recently installed & I'm gonna try what you said & leave it for a while to see if it crashes again.

Nokia E71 Crashing/hanging Problem

You're welcome.

When you reinstall the apps run the phone for a while with each app in turn before installing the next one. That way you'll single out the bad guy.
For some reason I'm thinking Google Toolbar ;)

Nokia E71 Crashing/hanging Problem

Good Morning video,

A big thanks to Sticky Mick for his help with this one! :D

I definitely think it's a great idea to try to resolve the problem. If after removing all the apps the problems are still there, I would recommend taking your handset for a repair.

It sounds like one of the app's is causing the problem's though so do let us know how you get on and your findings! :)

My phone hasn't crashed for 24 hours, but I haven't removed Google Toolbar. I have a sneaky feeling it may be Opera Mini? <_< The reason being, everytime I used that program the phone seemed slow, has anyone else found problems with Opera & isn't it still in beta stage?

So far so good then
OKies, thanks for clarifying. The reason I said Google Toolbar is because of their track record of wanting to do things without you knowing.
I've never had any problems with Opera mini on any of the handsets I've run it on, even though it never seems to be out of beta. Give Opera Mobile a try, see if there's any improvement with that. Although Opera does get a bit slow if you let your history get a bit full.

You can get Opera Mobile v8.65 from here: Opera Mobile Scroll down and it's near the bottom.

Is Opera Mobile free?

Not sure if it is free, but if not it should have a long enough trial period for testing purposes.
