Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Have finally got my pop3 account sorted but have found that emails in my inbox seem to be 'sucked up' and disapear. This was happening when I was using the Nokia push email and I had hoped it would be resolved by moving to pop3.

Can anyone tell me what's happening and how to stop it ? Disappearing emails part way through the day is really annoying ! (actually, I can't live with it). Is it something to do with set up interval ? (what is set up interval anyway - I had assumed it was the polling interval).

On the subject of email set up, why don't I get any option to auto-bcc or option to 'keep copy on server' ? (or any other common email choices ?)

E72 is a good phone but I simply CANNOT sort out the email - have got all kinds of advice but as usual with Nokia there is no proper manual.

Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Hi karen100,

I'm afraid there is no Auto-BCC option, or an option to leave a copy on the server on the E72 :(

If you are downloading your emails via POP3 on another device, such as via Outlook, then I suspect it may be deleting items that it has downloaded. When your phone then polls for emails, it sees that you have deleted the email from the mail server, and so replicates this change across to your handset.

There are no options to disable this functionality on this handset.

As an alternative, have you considered using Vodafone Email Plus?

Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Hi Jon,

I did some experimenting today with downloading emails via:

Nokia messaging for Yahoo email
Nokia messaging for claranet mail
pop3 claranet.

Nokia messaging+Yahoo sort of worked as expected and downloaded to both handset and remained on server, so when I accessed via web browser, email was still there.

For both of the other two, the message was downloded to the phone and kept on the server (and downloaded to Outlook later). However, mysteriously during the day, the email was 'sucked up from the handset so I couldn't re-read it.

The big problem I have with Nokia E72 email is both this sucking emails back business and total lack (nearly) of conguration settings. It seems to be set (or maybe it's the Vodafone network - my husband doesn't have this problem with his HTC on T-Mobile) for CORPORATE useor Hotmail/Yahoo use (again IMAP, I think) but not for individuals without a mail server.

I asked the Vodafone customer service people about Email Plus and they told me to ignore it !

Reckon I've gone off this phone big time and maybe I'll send it back to Vodafone. Or else just use it for voice calls and text. How can it be so RUBBISH at email ?

But thanks for replying.

Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Hi Karen

POP3 is not really the best email protocol for mobile phones. Give IMAP a go and hopefully you shouldn't have any problems. Also, don't use the Nokia messaging service. Most users with email problems seem to use this.

I use IMAP and don't use Nokia messaging and have had no problems.

Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Hi Karen

I agree with Tiggerific Imap in my experience is the best mail protocol to use in this type of situation.

Vodafone email plus is a client that sits on the phone that pulls email periodically, it mimics the function of push email as it polls every x minutes so this could possibly do what you would want it to do.

Thanks

If you have Yahoo mail - I found that they do a nice autoconfig sms service that sets up yahoo mail as IMAP (leaves email on your server where pop3 will download and remove the email from the server)

I was having a number of problems with Nokia messaging and now I have yahoo mail safely on my phone.

(also you can set up yahoo mail to get your email from another email service
Hope it helps

Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Hi Andy,

Thanks - I, too, have got my Yahoo email working pretty well. The problem I am having is with my pop3 private business email address - am beginning to wonder if this will ever work - I never appear to get any options to configure polling interval etc and have pretyy much given up - I have reverted to Nokia messaging service since although I stiil don't understand what 'synchronisation interval' actually means (!) it does seem to 'more or less' work.

Karen

Nokia E72 - Still Got Email Problems

Hi Jon,

This was really useful - now that you have explained, it makes perfect sense to me as well ! ;)

I wonder if you could answer another couple of questions:

a) what exactly is the synchronisation interval on Nokia messaging for ?? Synchronisation with what ? I just don't get the terminology.

b) do you reckon Vodafone email plus is better than Nokia messaging ? If so, why. Also could I use this as an inclusive in my 'unlimited email' package.

Thanks again - I hate being mystified !

Hi Karen1000,

What you describe is exactly what I would expect to see for each different email account - they are working exactly as they are designed to.

The emails are being "sucked up" because Outlook has downloaded them, and delete them from the server. If you were not getting your POP3 emails via Outlook at all, then they would stay on the handset - alternatively, if you go to Outlook and select Tools > Email Accounts > View or Change > Change > More Settings > Advanced > Leave a copy of Messages on the server.

This will resolve the issue.

Yahoo is not affected because the inbox you see on Webmail is different from the POP3 inbox that you are downloading emails from. Items deleted from the POP3 mail server are not deleted from the Webmail system, so you wouldn't see any changes there unless you also were to download these emails to Outlook.

To setup Vodafone Email Plus, simply go here, and click on the Vodafone Email Plus option. Follow the instructions to get this service setup on your handset :)

Ah, well I'm glad to have helped! :D

I wonder if you could answer another couple of questions:

The Nokia UserGuide doesn't define this setting anywhere that I can see, but if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's the frequency with which your phone checks for new or deleted emails on the mail server, and then replicates these changes to your inbox.

b) do you reckon Vodafone email plus is better than Nokia messaging ? If so, why. Also could I use this as an inclusive in my 'unlimited email' package.

It is a lot easier to setup emails using Vodafone Email Plus - you don't need to mess around with incoming or outgoing servers and the like - it's also a PUSH email service, so your phone doesn't actually use data for checking for new email as it does at the moment. Instead your phone sits idle, and when Email Plus gets new email come into it, it sends it directly to your handset without your phone ever having to ask for it.

It's a subscription service, so any data used by Vodafone Email Plus is included in the cost and does not come out of your existing allowance :)

I trust this helps.
