Nokia N900 - Should 205 Handset Owners Have An Option To Download PR1.2?

Updating my N900 now. I have just flashed to 203 variant and now updating OTA from the beginning. I flashed the first first version so I could do a full clean install/upgrade.
I have loaded in 1.2009.42-11.203.2 and just this second installed 1.2009.44-1.203.4 no problems so far. I will post back once pr1.2 is installed.

Now re-booting and inserting sim card, fingers crossed.

Nokia N900 - Should 205 Handset Owners Have An Option To Download PR1.2?

just a quick note
we won't lose ovi store as such because we have the catalog pre installed however if nokia decide to drop their support (which is unlikley anytime soon) we will only be able to download the free apps
and another thing, i think that vodafone are the only carriers offering the N900 and you'll find that all the other carriers like to brand their own firmware too, its just that they don't have the N900 to delay on

Thanks for the sniff of info James, but to clarify, which 'new maintenance release' are you 'currently working on'?

Is that the next firmware version from the official VF release, which I believe is 2 releases behind now? If this is the case it's not going to change a great deal for people that are sticking with the VF branded firmware.

Or is it the actual 1.2 release that people with 203 firmware versions are now getting OTA?

the term 'maintainence release' probably means 1.1.1, if it was in relation to pr1.2 it should say update seen as it adds new features

Nokia N900 - Should 205 Handset Owners Have An Option To Download PR1.2?

Unlike all other companies, Vodafone seemed to brand their firmware for the N900. As the N900 is built on open-source firmware, it's really impossible to trace what has been done with the phone. This is where most normal users will get lost. Let me try to explain this in simple terms.

Going back to an old Nokia with S60 Symbian running, you can only UPGRADE your firmware, once you're up you can't go back down. With the N900, you can go up and then back down. Thus, you can run 1.2 if you wish, and then if you get a problem you can re-flash with Vodafone 205 firmware and take it to the shop for repair.

You have nothing to lose, but so many new features to gain!!

Why wait to be told something (probably after it happens!). You have the power to go find out. Vodafone has lost and continues to lose alot of goodwill with me over this.

sorry this statment is wrong here is a quote from nokia today

We strongly encourage all users to install the latest software to ensure your N900 runs as smoothly as possible. Once you’ve installed the update, you’ll also be able to enjoy new Ovi Store content like 3D Rollercoaster, QuickPanorama Pro, Angry Birds Level Pack, Sygic Mobile Maps and more. Please note that because PR1.2 enables paid content, older versions of Maemo 5 will no longer support Ovi Store.

Additionally, PR1.2 will support Qt technology that enables application compatibility between Maemo5 and the upcoming MeeGo OS.

and here is the link to the full nokia hedlines

http://maemo.nokia.com/news/n900-gets-even-better-with-the-latest-update/

thees the proof for vodafone now they need to do something fast tbh otherwise there gonna have even more unhappy customers tomorrow if the new ovi store is launched as planned.

Nokia N900 - Should 205 Handset Owners Have An Option To Download PR1.2?

Adam F I would. Just flashed my N900 yesterday and now its fully pr1.2 capable, all contacts were kept, I lost mail settings and the apps only, but I wanted a clean install to start over again.
Now just waiting for the new OVI store to open today.
BTW Nokia have announced once the new OVI store is active only 1.2 updated N900s will work from then onwards, so from today non N900 handsets will not be able to download any apps from OVI store, according to Nokia news?

Thanks Vodafone for making us have to seek other ways to have operational handsets and letting down your customers so willingly. How are the more non technical handset owners going to survive when the handset becomes practically unuseable? Not good enough at all and this lack of support is not being reflected in cheaper monthly rentals, its very expensive and you are not recognising this one iota, shameful.

Nokia N900 - Should 205 Handset Owners Have An Option To Download PR1.2?

Hi

So I just spoke to Vodafone regarding whether upgrading to PR 1.2 will invalidate my warranty and the lady tells me that it's fine to do so as my warranty is with Nokia and not Vodafone. She also assured me that the firmware running on my N900 was in fact, "Vodafone-modified" software and even though, according to the Nokia software update website, my current supported version is : 1.2009.42.11 (I'm currently running 2.2009.51), it's okay to update.

To coin a phrase re: Vodafone, does the left hand know what the right hand is doing?

Why can't they be more open re: firmware?

Hi,

I have been waiting for the update since the night it was due to release. I haven't received it yet. I have been looking for answers why my N900 wont prompt me to update and the only answer I got was VODA IS ######!
Its easy to find faults but with voda I don't even have to try.
Ordered my N900 online and was promised next day delivery...it was delayed! I requested a replacement cuz it was playing up, had to wait a week and also, long calls to Voda's CS which is in itself another story. and now this!
Here is the crack....I AM PAYING £45 A MONTH TO YOU! ITS MY HANDSET! GIVE ME THE DAM UPDATE!

Hi YoungGun,

Please refer to our Firmware Statement for a more in-depth explanation of why you will not find any information about upcoming firmware releases or release dates on our forum.

It is not a case that we are not finding out for you, but more a case that we simply aren't authorised to give you any information until the firmware has been signed off on and approved for release.

Now this is exactly the kind of reply that gets my goat.

Nothing personal but what the hell are the eForum Team employed for? If anyone in the company should have access to firmware release dates and the like then surely it must be you, the very people who have first contact with us, the paying customer, you know, the people that supply the money to pay your wages.

I love these responses, if people are clever enough to find the right forum for their problems then it's pretty safe to assume that they are also able to find the firmware statement and faqs without too much trouble.

If this forum was run properly then half the complaints on here would dissappear overnight, you rarely even have examples of phones to assist people with their problems.

And, while I'm on a roll, I love the responses that stress how Vodafone customers actually like all the Vodafone stuff you put on your phones which is why our updates are always delayed, have a troll through the forums people and see how many threads there are singing the praises of all the additional Vodafone buttons and links their phones now have, and then, see how many threads moan and complain about the lack of usefull updates and how many show you how to remove Vodafone firmware, are you getting the message yet Vodafone??

I doubt it!

I really dont know why voda cant just release the nokia update then release an update with all the voda ###### on it after wards. i mean this is an incredible way to treat high end customers we all got this handset as we want to be upto date then two months after getting it its rendered obselete. ive spent five hours today flashing my handset just to stay current. got to say vodafone this is very very poor and i will certainly remember this when its time for renewal
