Nokia X6 - Phantom message

Hi there,

My phone has been receiving and sending so called "phantom" messages to this number 88850800003436. There is no record of these messages in my inbox/sent items, and I only discovered it when one failed to send from my outbox. They contain random letters and numbers, starting with "<> I would like to know the following about these messages (if possible)

-1. To Whom they are being sent to
-2. Why they are being sent
-3. How to stop them
-4. Have I been charged for any of these sent messages
-5. Why do the 191 customer service agents not have any of this information available?

Many Thanks in advance!

Nokia X6 - Phantom message

I've noticed a couple of other threads on this lately which might help you out with some of the above questions. Removing the Vodafone 360 application appears to resolve it

Nokia X6 - Phantom message

Thanks for the quick reply's. I have looked at the links on the forum, and have since removed the application from my phone. However, I cannot establish a reason why a Vodafone App would be sending messages to and from my phone "secretly". And if it is Vodafone who are responsible for these messages, how come the 191 helpline agents are not aware of this?

Thanks

Nokia X6 - Phantom message

Hi richyf50

I can understand your concerns over this issue.

The solution of removing the 360 app was a suggestion from a eForum member that did stop these SMS from being sent. It has subsequently being tried on a different X6 wih the same results to the issue. The information didn't come from our devices team, therefore our 191 team would not know of the issue, or it's possible work around.

I want to forward the information to our devices team to get this checked out and resolved without the need for unistalling apps. To do this I would need the firmware version of your X6. If you can add this to this thread, we can get this raised, and subsequently inform you of any findings.

Let me know if you've any further issues.

Regards

Trev

Re: Nokia X6 - Phantom message

I've also started having problems with texts. I receive unsolicited messages from 88850800003436 with the same sort of binary code at front, and back, of the text. In the middle is the text 'https://my191wap.vodafone.co.uk' followed by the 888 number and then my mobile number. Then frequently my phone, again unsolicited, sends a reply to that same number. I've spent more than 2 weeks trying to find out from Vodafone a) what the messages are, b) where are they from and c) what's their purpose. To date I've had many mnay different ideas from Vodafone. I've asked them to stop these texts but to date still no-one has been able to stop them. I have noticed that sometimes they appear after I've started using GPS but this isn't always the case. MY191 is not, as far as I can see, installed on my phone. Are there any other services which could be the culprit? I'd heard that SELFSERVICE could be at fault but it's not possible to delete this. Anyone got any ideas?

Many applications exchange secure system messages with there host via SMS, usually this will be invisable to you and you will not be charged,

as is  the case of the voda 191 app, hence the messy number,

Now the voda 191 app apears buggy as hell on symbian, not supprising given as the level of changes in the OS in the past year or so,  and these messages often show up as stuck clogging up the out box,

to get shot simply remove the 191 app, the threads linked above contain instrctions

Note I do not work for voda, My advice comes from experience and my opinions are my own
